March 13   The attractive older woman stretched her arms while the sunrise peeked through her windows. In the background, a familiar program played on the bedrooms television. After Amber strolled outside with her dogs, she relished the warmth of the sun. As the dogs ventured forth and played, she sat down. Amber sauntered inside the house after the dogs were done. When Amber was in front of the living room television, she turned it on. Amber busied herself in the kitchen. Amber's tranquility was interrupted by the phone. "Hello," said Amber. "Are you watching the TV?" asked Melissa. "I have it on, but I'm in the kitchen, sis. Why?" probed Amber. "People are going crazy. They're attacking other people," answered Melissa. "What? Are you joking?" questioned Amber as she switched channels. "Nope. Watch the news," responded Melissa. An obnoxious siren rang on Amber's television, and a mechanical voice said, "This is a breaking news special report." As soon as the buzzer stopped, an anchorman reported, "I'm sorry for the interruption in your regular programming. I'm Niles Jeeves, and with me is Elizabeth Stephenson. Martial law has been declared for the United States. The curfew will start at 8 P.M. and ends at 7 A.M. Looters will be severally punished. If you don't have to leave your house for supplies or medical attention, don't leave your dwelling." Niles shuffled his papers then stared at the camera, "This is all the news for now. We will keep you up to date. Please, be safe and stay indoors. We return you to your regular programming." As Amber's buttocks hit the couch, she whispered, "What's going on?" "People are getting eaten or maimed. The criminals rape other people," related Melissa. "Give me a minute," said Amber. Slowly Amber rose from the couch in a few quick strides she was in front of the door. After Amber opened the door, she positioned the phone against her chest. "Davis!" exclaimed Amber. When Davis ran up, Amber waved her hand, and he followed. Davis sat on the couch along with his mother while a finger rose. "What should I know?" asked Amber. "It started in our largest cities 3 days ago. Here in Ohio, it started this morning. The victims who live convulse then they turn," reported Melissa. The loud buzz came on the television again and the mechanical voice. "We are sorry for the interruption in your programming. We have a crew in the field reporting on the confusion," reported Niles. "Now to you, Dana Han," conveyed Elizabeth. "Hello, Niles and Elizabeth. We're on the outskirts of Las Angeles. It's no longer an option to venture inside the big cities. The hordes of cannibalistic people have taken over the inner city," reported Dana. "Are you safe?" asked Niles. "We have armed forces at this location," replied Dana. Soon after her words stopped, screams were heard. Soldiers ran forward as civilians ran for them. "What is that, Dana?" questioned Niles. A woman ran up to Dana and screamed in a panic, "Run! They're coming!" The cameraman spanned the camera in the direction the people ran from. It held on blue dots headed for them. Dana grabbed hold of a woman and asked, "What is that?" "It's the cannibals. Run," answered the woman, then she ran. Soon the pair heard growls the camera, and Dana slowly looked in that direction as the blue dots were near them. A soldier ran up and ordered, "You need to leave." Reporters in the background began leaving the area, Dana held a finger up. "Niles. Elizabeth. We're getting ordered to leave the area. We will keep filming as we leave the area," stated Dana. "Be careful, Dana," expressed Niles. "Thank you...," said Dana but was interrupted by the soldier. "Run," commanded the soldier. When the pair turned, they saw what the blue dots came from, the eyes of the cannibals. People were jumped by the blue-eyed assailants. A male jumped another female reporter tearing at her clothes. Other cannibals tried joining, but he bared his teeth and growled. The reported swung at him, only it had no effect against him. When he had his fill, his teeth clamped on her shoulder. A cameraman was overrun by four female cannibals. Soon they tore off his clothes, licked, and feasted on him. Blood soaked the ground around him, then chunks of meat littered the area. The cameraman's screams stopped. The soldier and the pair run toward the barricade and their safety. Instantly they have a very fast-moving man on them. He took out the soldier and Dana with a swing of his arms. The blue-eyed foe was on the soldier, ripped his shirt, and bit his shoulder. Blood trickled from the corners of the foe's mouth as Dana's head rose. Her eyes widen in horror as the man leaped from the soldier, shoving Dana backward. "Pretty," whispered the assailant. Immediately the cannibal ripped the buttons off Dana's jacket and shirt. He smiled as he glared at her bra. His head turned slowly toward the cameraman, and he smiled while Dana struck his torso. "Get him... Turn him," ordered the cannibal. "What?" questioned the cameraman. Slowly his feet slid back as a few cannibals walked toward him. "Don't show anymore," conveyed a man in the control booth. "No! Keep showing this. They need to know," declared the leader inside the booth. "I've been told we will keep showing this. We urge, leave the room if you have small children," reported Niles. When the camera was put across the screen, it's moving fast. There were screams, laughter, and grunts coming out of the speakers as the cameraman wasn't far before he was tackled then restrained. A woman straddled him and licked his cheek. Quickly she tore open his shirt then licked his torso. The camera's eye watched as they attacked the cameraman. Soon he lay there, then foam trickled from the corner of his mouth. Convulsions shake his body then he was still. His eyes snapped open, and his head turned toward the camera. After the slow-motion creepy head turn, he smiled and showed his eyes. His eyes have a blue haze, a red circle around the iris, and the blood vessels spread out in lines from the circle. He picked the camera up and went back, filming the chaos then what was happening to Dana. "We come... for you...," declared the cannibal leader. They all laugh around the cameraman, Dana, and the cannibal. They grunt, growl, and howl encouragement for their leader while they watched the show. When he turned Dana, they all walked away from the scene of the crime. "Oh, dear. This is horrible," whispered Amber. "Yes. It was," remarked Melissa. "Get over here as fast as you can. We'll be heading out," commanded Amber. "I'll let you know. I'll talk with Jake," responded Melissa. "My book in real life," said Amber. "Zombies," conveyed Davis. "You live through an attack, and you become infected," stated Amber. "They either want to eat you or knock boots with you," remarked Davis. "You know you're not right," retorted Amber. On that note, Davis moved fast from his chair and sat down beside Amber then laid his leg across her lap. "Mommy. You know you love me," jested Davis. When Davis started to rub his face against Amber, she laughed and shoved him away. "You're silly, behave," uttered Amber. Immediately Amber shoved him and stood. She walked to a white box on the wall and pressed a button. "Jess," said Amber. "Yes, Amber," responded Jessica. "We're going out. Hell is breaking loose. We're going to get supplies and Joe," stated Amber. "Alright. Let me get ready," informed Jessica. When Jessica walked inside Amber's house, they hugged and said their goodbyes. Amber drove for her bank. "I'm getting as much money as I can," conveyed Amber. When the teller signaled for Amber, she walked up to the counter. "I need as much money as I can get from my account," related Amber. "I can only do $5,000.00. I'll get my manager for more," replied the teller. "Alright. Get the manager," expressed Amber. "Hello, Miss White. How much do you want?" asked the manager. "$20,000.00 if I can. Also, I would like to know my card's spending limit," related Amber. The manager typed on a keyboard and talked, "With the madness going on out there, I don't blame you. I'm letting my tellers leave early. There we go. I can do $20,000.00, and I raised your card's limit to $50,000.00." "Be careful when you all go home," conveyed Amber. "Thank you, Amber. You be safe, also," said the manager. When they pulled up in the lot, there were cars out of control. They back without watching, and horns were blaring. "We should watch our step," warned Amber. The chaos continued inside the store. People fighting over supplies, cops, and soldiers intervene in the commotion. "Grab two carts," ordered Amber. "Yes, mommy," remarked Davis. "Silly. Let's find your brother," commanded Amber. When they Joseph instantly, Amber reported, "We should get out of here, Joe. It's getting bad out there." "I can't just leave," stated Joseph. “Yes. You don't need this job," expressed Amber. As Amber and Davis loaded the carts up with supplies, there was disorder around them. A woman then a man was led away in handcuffs by the police. "Did you hear the gunfire?" asked Amber. "Yes," answered Davis. "People and panic. They do stupid things," remarked Amber. "Let's stock up on weapons," ordered Amber. "Alright," responded Davis. The panicked faces float by Amber as if she was in a living nightmare. With all the hope Amber had in her body, she refrained from the panic. A man tried hitting a police officer as they walked by. Soon they were checking out as a man attempted grabbing one of her carts. Amber immediately gripped his wrist, gave him a stern glare, and declared, "I don't think so. You can't pay for what you have." The man's eyes grew wide, and he shrugged off Amber's grip, then his hand rose. A hand grabbed the man's arm before he had a chance to strike, and the words followed, "I would listen to the lady. Also, don't hit a woman." "Thank you," said Amber. "You're welcome, ma'am," conveyed the soldier. "Since we have a lot of supplies, Will you stand guard?" asked Amber. "Yes. Wait for us," answered the soldier. Amber placed her attention on the cashier and said, "Put his stuff with ours. I'll be able to pay for it all." Amber and Davis stopped with their carts close by Joseph, then she walked beside him and questioned, "Can you leave?" "No," replied Joseph. Amber let out a huff and stated, "I'll take care of this." Scanning her surroundings, Amber found the figure in the yellow vest and marched toward him. "We will talk," declared Amber. His jowl dropped and said, "I'll see what I can do for you." "You will let Joe go. If there's a place to come back to, he'll have a job," demanded Amber with a forceful tone. He opened his mouth, and Amber ordered, "Don't. Just do it." Amber strode over where Davis and the soldiers were waiting. Amber smiled and winked at Davis while she walked toward Joseph. "They will take over when you finish with this customer," reported Amber. "Alright, mom," responded Joseph. The soldier walked beside Amber while everybody else pushed a cart. Amber smiled as the SUV's horn beeped and stated, "It's nice having a big SUV." "With what is going on, yes," related the soldier. "I hope this will be useful," remarked Amber as she gave him a piece of paper. The soldier looked at the paper and questioned, "A phone number and address?" "My phone number and address," reported Amber. "Thank you, ma'am. I'll keep this in mind," stated the soldier. "Will get Ray and Derrick next," conveyed Amber. "They're on the way," said Joseph. Davis ran from the automobile after they halted in front of a house. Soon Davis ran from the house with two men in tow. "Now we get Alex," directed Amber. They get back on the road heading for Newark, where Alexandria and Aidan live. As they close in on the county lines, a military roadblock was in site. They halt as the soldier held his hand up. "Where are you heading?" asked the soldier. "Newark. I'm getting my daughter," answered Amber. "We have orders not to let anyone go to Newark. Cannibals overrun it," reported the soldier. "We need to get there to save them," related Amber. "I'm sorry Newark is off-limits," reported the soldier. Without hesitation, Amber barged from the SUV as the soldier walked away. When Amber was close enough, she grasped his arm, stopping him and pleaded, "Please." "Ma'am. You should get back to your vehicle before the zombies come," commanded the soldier. "They're finally calling them zombies?" questioned Amber. "Yes. They are calling them zombies," responded the soldier. "My name is Amber White. May I ask you some questions?" probed Amber. "Yes. Afterward, you'll leave," directed the soldier. Amber scanned their surroundings and stopped when she saw a brush moving. The brush moved every so often as Amber looked from the soldier then the bush. "Do we know how it started yet?" asked Amber. "Not yet. We will, in time," answered the soldier. They looked as the brush shook harder, and growls came.
