Chapter 1

Cursing was not one of Ayanna’s hobbies nor was it one of her expertise. But at the moment, all she wanted to do was to curse out loud. If you thought waking up in a Monday morning was difficult, you would probably not survive waking up only to realize that you had been rejected by another company. At the moment, she was still sprawled on her bed on the lower bunk of the double deck, her wavy black hair was in a messy ponytail, and she was still on her pajamas. It was not the first time she was rejected by a publishing company. She had been trying to get her book published since she was in high school. But what got her booty on fire was the fact that she promised everyone in high school that she would be a published author by the time she turned 21 which was around more than a year from the present time. One year and three months was not a long time because Ayanna would have to revise her stories—yes, with an ‘s’—and find a publishing company. Frustrating enough, many companies are looking for a romance s********e were even looking for heartbreaking ones. Let’s just say, Ayanna was not the best at that department. “What crawled into your a*s and rot?” Ayanna’s best friend and roommate, Lilia, asked. She was standing by the bathroom door, braiding her hair. Lilia was the typical nerd. She got her long and thick black hair in a braid and she got thick black-rimmed glasses. Usually, she would be wearing a jacket over an oversized tee even if it was not cold—Philippines could barely be cold—paired with a pair of denim jeans. Still, this pale-skinned nerd was pretty. Ayanna was not the opposite though. While she let her wavy black hair that reached her mid-back loose, she also had her own thick black-rimmed glasses. Her skin was not too white or too brown either. She did not have one fashion sense though. Rather, she would wear shirt when she felt like it or wear a dress, or anything really. But that was not important in the present situation. “I got rejected again,” Ayanna muttered, annoyance was written all over her face. She could not believe she was once again rejected. She felt like she did not deserve it. “If you say you got rejected by a boy, I would have been happy,” Lilia commented, letting her hands rest on her sides as she finished braiding her hair. That earned her a lazy glare from Ayanna. “I’m so sorry that you got rejected. It’s the break up story, right?” “Yes, it’s the collection of break up short stories,” Ayanna grumbled under her breath. “And you know what sucks? They gave me an advice to read more about romance or worse, experience it firsthand!” Lilia laughed at that, shaking her head. “You sound so disgusted by the thought. Come on, Ayanna, it’s not like you never had a list of crushes!” The girl had a point, Ayanna did have tons of crushes before but those were admiration. Her crushes tended to disappear in about a week or so, the longest being for about a month. It was unlike Lilia who had only one person she ever liked and she still liked—that was for about six years! Yes, indeed, Ayanna was still a noob when it came to dating. She had never kissed anyone, held hands with someone, or even went on a date. Everything she knew, she found out through novels she read and dramas she watched as a guilty pleasure. Ayanna paused for a second as her mind worked. “I know! Why don’t you just describe what you felt for the guy? Oh, and how you felt when he left.” “No way.” Lilia deadpanned. “That will be too cheesy for me to explain. I wouldn’t be able to explain it without cringing. We wouldn’t want to deal with me cringing every five seconds, would we?” Making a face, Ayanna shrugged. She would not mind cringing with Lilia if it meant having a proper content. “Oh, I don’t mind,” she muttered as a reply. However, being a difficult friend she was, Lilia simply rolled her eyes. “Sure, you don’t. Well, I do so we are so not going to do that.” She paused. “Why don’t you go ahead and confess to someone? Go on a few dates then maybe fall in love? Then, break up with them,” Lilia joked. Ayanna felt like a hammer had hit her brain. Ideas flooded her head in an instant. She shot up from her bed. “You’re a genius, Lilia!” “I am?” “I could kiss you right now but I haven’t even brushed my teeth yet!” Ayanna said with a grin plastered on her face. “I should probably hurry up and get ready to the campus. You should hurry too. You have a 7 am class.” Before Lilia could have another say, Ayanna passed by her and ran towards the bathroom. She was so darn excited for this new change in her life. Lilia was such a genius.   ***** Lilia was not a genius. Two periods in and Ayanna swore Lilia’s advice was the most stupid advice in the planet. Where on Earth was she to find a guy who would willingly date her and make her fall in love with them? Sure did sound stupid to her. She let out another sigh as she packed up, it was lunch time for her next but she did not really learn anything from the first two classes she had. She stood up from her seat and let out another deep sigh. Lilia’s lunch break and hers were not at the same time so she had no one to help her think. She had other friends but they would surely think she was being stupid—which she was. With her head down, she looked down on her feet. The gears in her head kept on turning. She had got to think of who to date. In her head, she was already listing down her possible “options”. She was even counting using her fingers. She did not have that many guy friends and most of them, she just saw as a brother while the others she deemed as annoying. She did not know that much people either as introverted as she was. And it was as if the world had ran out of cliché scenes, she bumped into someone’s hard chest. Usually, she would apologize and get it over with—she almost did. Except when she looked up, she saw the most beautiful creature she had ever seen in her life. Lake Dylan Pavia.
