Chapter 1
After the war, if you had any magical talent but didn’t make it behind the Wall, you were doomed to became slaves of the Witches. This is what happened to Mia’s parents. She was too little to remember their faces or names. All she had in her mind when thinking of them was the fire, it’s heat and the endless screams. They must have burnt to death but she had no way of knowing it. Like many of the kids of the Rebels, she was taken to an orphanage run by Mrs. Bliss, the most powerful witch in the North of the country. Unlike the rich kids of the witches and wizards, she lived in the most wretched conditions imaginable. Like all the girls there, she wore a plain grey T-shirt, two sizes too big for her, worn out baggy jeans and some old shoes. Her long red hair twisted in a messy bun haven’t been brushed in weeks, when Mrs. Bliss, in a fit of total rage, destroyed her room and took all her stuff, even the hairbrush. All she has done that day was stare for a second too long at the rich guys going to the private school next to their orphanage. She was trimming the bushes when their bus stopped in front of the magnificent looking building that stands just next to their grey, rotting hole that might be mistaken for a haunted house. They looked gorgeously tasty in their black robes, with the silver scarfs around their necks, hairspray in their silky hair. There was this one boy that quickly grabbed her attentions with his perfect blonde hair, the dreamy blue eyes and even more dreamy pink lips curled in a handsome smile. She stopped trimming the bushed just for a second to look at the handsome guy when Mrs. Bliss noticed her right away, pushed her to the floor, screaming, dragged her by the hair up to her room, destroyed half of her things, including her tiny mirror, and with one wave of her wand, took the other half away from the poor girls. Locked in her room for the fourth day in a row without any proper food, Mia thought of her parents, wishing and dreaming that the war never happened and the witches and wizards would all burn in hell. Like so many other kids in her orphanage, because she had no idea who her parents were, she had no idea who she herself was. Maybe she was a mermaid or a fairy, a werewolf or something but there was no way of knowing. Mrs. Bliss prohibited all kinds of magic and without letting the kids participate in the annual Rite of the Summer, with the South Pool behind the Wall and the north one in the power of the witches and wizards, because they were the kids of the rebels, their true heritage and powers could never be discovered. At this side of the wall, only the kids of witches and wizards could participate in the Rite. Everybody else had to live like a defenceless, miserable, magicless human, like Mia. “Hey, you! What’ you lookin’ at, skunk?!”, shouted somebody outside. It was Mrs. Bliss’ new favourite, Lolitta was her name. She was dressed in a black sexy dress with a black choker around her white, perfect neck. Her purple hair, tied into a nice bun. Mia’s window was facing the arcade and bar that stood behind the orphanage grounds, separated by a huge wall and bar wire. Her window was just above the wall, of course barred so she couldn’t escape. No one could. Mia was shocked! They saw her! The window wasn’t dirty enough to hide her face. She ducked quickly, her heart pounding. Afraid to look at the happy teenagers at the other side of the fence. This was the epiphany of Mrs. Bliss’ evil: she loved to remind the kids in the orphanage that they were nothing less than powerless vermin while showing them what they could never become: rich, happy, powerful, loved… like the wizards and witches. Tears flooded Mia’s eyes. No matter how much she denied it, she envied them and dreamed of becoming one of them. She didn’t remember her parents. She didn’t know who they were. There was a chance they were a witch and a wizard, right? “Mia, get out of your room, right this instant! Mrs. Bliss ha job for you!”, screamed Mr. Dust at the other side of the door, opening it with a bang. He was an ugly hunchback, crawling along the cold corridors like a bug. She was obedient. He pushed her in the direction of Mrs. Bliss’ office. Mrs Bliss was sitting behind her huge desk, not even caring to look up at the girl. Somebody was sitting in the huge armchair in front of Mrs. Bliss, next to the warm, huge fireplace. “Pack your things girl, you have a job now.”, said the witch. “But, ma’am. School…”, groaned the girl. “Don’t worry about it. You’ll go when I say you’ll go.”, said Mrs. Bliss putting down the pen. Her black eyes, looking from under huge black, greasy eyelashes, shot daggers at the girl. Her golden, rich dress didn’t fit her overweight body or the purple hat sitting on top of her brown curls. Maybe she was beautiful when she was younger but right now, all of it was gone. Besides, how ugly would she be if she hadn’t used al those magical potions witches use for beauty, Mia couldn’t never comprehend! “The teachers don’t care about a stupid girl like you. Besides, you didn’t understand what I meant… but you will… soon. Dust, take her to the highest tower and make sure she doesn’t escape like the last one… tried to.” Ordered the witch. Her voice trembled a bit with the last words as she looked nervously at the person in the armchair. Mia knew exactly what this meant. Her heart was racing like crazy but she found no strength or courage to even try and escape. Soon, she found herself in the top tower, far above the arcades, looking over the whole gloomy town. She was alone locked in a cage. “Calm down, calm down, Mia! It’s going to be ok! He’s going to do his stuff and I’ll be free to go. Besides, only one more month of this torture.”, she said to herself, trying to stay optimistic, no matter what. “No! No, no, no! I’m not going down without a fight!”, she exclaimed with passion looking around the place for a suitable weapon. There was a lot of stuff. The main part of the room was relatively clean, with a huge bed in the middle. The rest was separated with a heavy, purple curtain behind which there was old furniture, piano, mirrors and two cages. Mia has never seen such beautiful animals. Two birds: one blue and one fiery red, with long flowy tails and beautiful voices sat in two cages on top of some old furniture, looking at the redhaired girl with wonder. She wanted to look at the more but there was business to do and a weapon to find. Finally, she had to be satisfied with an old, broken umbrella. Suddenly the doors slammed. “Here you are, cupcake.”, said a sexy male voice. Mia turned around at found herself in front of the dreamy blonde guy. Her knees melted right under her. “You’ve ruined my morning a couple of days ago with your petty theatrics. I’ll eat you whole.”, he whispered walking slowly toward the trembling beauty.
