CHAPTER 1
Emily. It’s a Monday morning and I’m just walking into my workplace. However, instead of taking my things to my desk, I grab my boss’s coffee. Aiden Davis, a well-known talent manager and ladies’ man, has been my boss for three years. Initially, he overwhelmed me with tasks. However, I soon figured out he was trying to make me quit, like he did with all the others before me. However, what he didn’t realise is I’m a very patient person when I need to me unless I’m stressed. Nevertheless, he stopped in the end Although he still has his days, he can not tolerate me, nevertheless I take that as a win Surprisingly, he can be quite pleasant when he chooses to be. As I hurry towards the elevator, balancing two cups of steaming coffee, I’m bumped into, causing the scalding liquid to splash all over my pristine white top. The scolding drink sears my skin as I carefully use my pinky and ring finger to pry it away from the fabric, all the while still clutching onto the drinks. It may have been a good idea to put them down, Emily. A woman asks me, her green eyes meeting mine. “I’m so sorry you are you okay” I offer a gentle smile. I hold no desire for conflict in situations where it is not necessary. “Yes, I’m such a klutz today. I should’ve been more observant of my surroundings. Meanwhile, As I speak, I can’t help but expect my boss’s frustration. In fact, maybe not. He will probably think it’s funny. Moreover, as the woman attempts to say something, I shake my head and dismiss her concerns, saying, “It’s really not a problem. I’m certain there are spare clothes upstairs, so there’s no need to worry. there isn’t it’s a workplace, not a bloody closet. Before she rushes out the front doors, she gives me a smile filled with apologies while I press the elevator button. Standing inside, I can’t help but feel a tinge of anxiety, even though I’ve grown accustomed to his behavior, as his anger triggers memories of my childhood, even though I know he won’t hurt me. Finally, after what seems like an eternity, a sudden ping resonates through the air, announcing the opening of the doors and my arrival. Stepping out, I place everything on my desk before walking slowly towards his door. Without even bothering to knock, I enter the room. His head snaps up in surprise; however, as soon as he realizes it’s me, he nonchalantly returns his attention to the papers on his desk. “Morning Mr Davis, here is your coffee,” luckily it was mine I had spilled. With a deep, authoritative tone, he instructs me, “Put it on my desk, Miss Anderson.” No need to state the obvious, Sherlock. I wasn’t planning on placing it on my head; however, he would likely use me as his table if necessary. In response, I shake my head with a smile playing on my lips as I picture the amusing image. As he gazes at me once more, he mentions, “I have a meeting with an individual named Jacob Holland.” When he arrives, let him through.” I nod my head. “Yes, sir, no problem,” Just as I start to turn, he utters my name, “Emily,” compelling me to face him once more. I give him a drawn out “yes,” “What is that?” he asks, pointing to the unmistakable brown stain on my shirt. I shrug, explaining, “I got bumped into and ended up spilling your coffee.” “You need to change out of that. Do you have a fresh shirt to wear?” “I don’t bring spare clothes with me. It’s work I didn’t expect to get coffee on myself,” Getting up, he heads towards the door connected to his office. Soon enough, he returns, now holding a pristine white dress shirt. As he holds it out for me, I tell him, “This is going to be a dress on me, sir” He towered over me at 6ft3, with a muscular frame, while I stood at a modest 5ft5, slender in comparison. “Tuck it in. I don’t care what you do. Just change and take your clothes to be dry cleaned,” I let out a sigh as I turn around and walk out. Minutes later, I’m wearing the to big shirt I rolled the sleeves to below my elbows and tuck the bottom into my pants. Even though I might appear foolish, I’m only doing this until my clothes are clean. While printing and reviewing applications for new talents, a middle-aged man in a sharp suit and carrying a briefcase emerges from the elevator. Giving a bright smile I ask “how may I help you” He returns my smile, his eyes crinkling with warmth as he introduces himself. “I’m Jacob Holland, here to see Mr. Davis.” “Yes, go right through. He’s waiting already,” As he nods and heads towards his office, my mind wanders about what he does for a living. Aiden’s office is rarely occupied with meeting attendees and he doesn’t give off the vibe of someone he’s signed. Consequently. I shrug nonchalantly as I get back to my tasks, but my concentration is shattered by the sudden jarring ring of my phone Without even looking, I quickly answered the phone, knowing it could only be one person - my little sister Maggie. “I’m at work, Mags. I don’t want a repeat of what happened last time,” I tell her. Aiden lost his s**t when I was on a call with Maggie. granted he was in a pissed off mood, but still I don’t want it happening again scared the s**t out of me. “Sorry, I just wanted to say good morning and see how you’re doing.” I smile, feeling a surge of love for my sister, knowing that she is the most important person in my life. Over the past couple of years, I’ve been taking care of her ever since we escaped from my parents. However, my father, Logan, is an alcoholic and abusive. In contrast, my mother, Amanda, couldn’t care less about what he did to us. Despite this, we both carry the weight of the trauma. Specifically, I carry more of it than her because I would make sure he redirected his anger towards me instead of Maggie, in order to shield her. The anxiety I feel sometimes is overwhelming, but I have learned to hide it well, especially when I have to defend myself. I happily say, “Good morning, Mags,” with a bright smile on my face. “How are you managing with your boss’s grumpiness so far this morning?” I laugh, “Everything was fine until a mishap resulted in hot coffee spilling all over me and he’s not grumpy,” A hiss escapes her lips, as if she can empathize with my pain. “That must have been painful.” I admit “It was How are your studies going?” “ She sighs and says, “It’s exhausting. I’m in the middle of writing a 2000-word sociology essay. Do you want to finish it for me?” “Oh no, not happening. You got this, Mags. You’re very smart.” “Right, that’s why I bearly passed with a 50% on my last one.” I let out a sigh. She’s always so hard on. Herself she’s doing med school. Her passion is to become a doctor. “Focus on your studies and hang up the phone. We can chat later, but I want confirmation that you’ve finished the assignment.” Frustrated, she mutters a curt “fine” before ending with a soft “love you, sissy.” “Love you too, concentrate. Show them what you got, Mags. Use that brain of yours,” She tells me “I will” before she hangs up. After an hour, as I’m engrossed in answering calls, I see Aiden’s office door open and Jacob steps out, his face twisted into an irritated expression. Judging from his appearance, it must’ve been a intense conversation. Getting back to the call I say “I can book a meeting for next Thursday Mr Lewis at 11am. That’s the only time he has, I’m afraid.” There’s a beat of silence before he tells me, “that’s fine. Thank you. Let Mr Davis know I look forward to seeing him.” “I most certainly will, Mr Lewis,” After hanging up the phone, I make my way to Aiden’s office. I knock on the door and poke my head inside, asking, “I’m just going for my break, Mr. Davis. Do I need to handle anything before I leave” “ Taking his eyes off his phone, he advises, “No, but you can take a longer break.” He quickly checks his watch and continues, “Just come back around 12.” 12 that’s like 45 minutes away, then I realise something. “Oh Aiden,” I exclaimed with a disgusted tone, “do you need to have s*x in your office?” Giving me a pointed look, he says, “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Miss Anderson. Now go take your break. “Your a pig,” I say with a disgusted shake of my head, before I pivot and walk away. “don’t let the door hit your ass when you leave,” I flash him a mischievous smile as I playfully give him the middle finger, causing him to chuckle. It’s strange how smoothly we get along, but I prefer it this way instead of being treated like s**t every day. I like working here. In my previous job, the boss was inappropriate, which was the only downside. However, I had to tolerate it, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get me and Mags off the street. When I finally had enough money to rent the house I live in now, I left and got this job. Despite that, I’m happy I did. Additionally, who knows what else that prick would have done? Furthermore, it’s one reason I have trust issues. Consequently, I have no friends, except for Maggie, but she is all I need.
