CHAPTER TWO

Muna’s POV “Don’t do that,” I said as I let my eye trail his frail body. He had closed his eyes, an attempt to link up telepathically with his beta. I watch him try frantically, failing at each attempt. He sucked in air desperately as his breath came in more raggedly, showing his struggle as he came to terms with the information I had shared with him. “What do you want?” The alpha asked, his hoarse voice travelling through the air saturated with incense meant to make him breathe better. His eyes dulled as his chest heaved heavily. “I want your death,” I said with a finality that rocked my core, my breath storming my body as it came in droves. The tranquility in the air remained for a while after my statement, none of us making movement after my declaration. A hoarse sound filled the area as he took one long breath, his breath coming in erratically. “How did you manage this?” He asked as he saw there was no way for him to call for help. “Thought you would never ask,” I said with a smug smile on my face, “Ever wondered how it was you got attacked? Wondered how you started taking in drugs that only seemed to worsen your condition?” “You did that?” I stood still, my lips stretched on my face as soon as he realized. The attack on him when he had gone for hunting. No one knew his location or the hunting ground he had chosen, except a few loyal guards and I. He had returned from the hunt, battered and bruised, barely surviving his injuries. A foiled plan, I had noticed and went for my second option, slowly poisoning him, but I couldn’t do that without his physician knowing something about it. However, my sources had told me it was untraceable, but I had to make sure, visiting the physician during odd hours to let him know of my plan. Turned out both the physician and I had our grudges against the Alpha. His was as much as a betrayal as mine was of m******e. “Seth was in on it too?” He asked, turning his eyes away just as I sat on the bed close to him. “You would not have to guess about him being a part of my now, would you?” I said, placing my hand on the bed. “I truly loved you, Muna,” he said with his eyes filling with vitality one more time as he spoke, “I would forgive you for everything, take you back into my arms if we can settle this amicably,” he added, placing his hand on my hand that had remained on the bed. “I did not love you.” I replied, his eyes darkened to what I had said as he drew what I would say to be his last breath on his bed. “Don’t do this to me.” “I would do even more to you if you are to remain alive. The darkness should be your solace for the sins you committed against my people and I,” I replied, shrugging his hands away from me like they riddled him with a plague. His eyes shrunk at that action, his hands reaching for his chest, wheezing heavily despite the incense to help with his breathing. “Carlos,” I called out, faking a moment of weakness as I run out of the door, screaming the Beta’s name. His eyes reflected fear or seeing the tears that flowed from my eyes. “Call the physician.” “Seth!” Carlos’ voice rang through the building as he ran towards me. I gave him way to meet his master, still clutching to his chest, gasping for air. His words stuck to his lips like a broken loop. The physician ran past me, a look of acknowledgement passing between us while I stood crying my out my eyes. “Do something,” Carlos called to the physician, pushing him towards the already dying man. “It’s too late,” “It can’t be.” He said, his voice rising to a crescendo. I stood still, watching his eyes dart towards me in his last moment. His chest fell flat, not rising once more than he breathe his last. “I’m sorry I couldn’t do anything. The incense was here to help him breath properly until he was better. However, it seemed he had developed a heart attack while talking to the Luna,” Seth replied, pushing the spectacles he had put on back to his nose bridge. “What happened here, Luna?” Carlos asked as he walked menacingly towards me. “There’s no way our Alpha would give up in a matter of minutes.” I fell to the Beta’s chest, sobbing. “We were talking about the good time when I thought I could not hear him talk again. I raised my head my head to see him struggling to breathe before I made a move out to call you. How could he die like that?” I said, pounding softly on the Beta’s chest. “He’s gone.” “He can’t just leave us.” “You are the next in command. You are to be the one to make his death known to his people.” “I can’t,” I sobbed, grabbing on his clothes even tighter. He held on tight to me. “You should do this. You are capable of this.” His eyes bored into mine as he pulled himself away from my body. He seemed to be broken by the death of his master more than I could ever claim to be. “I would relate it to the Elders while you tell the people,” the physician suggested, covering the alpha with a white sheet. We all agreed to the decision, Carlos urging me to rest and take me away from the area. However, I disagreed with him, deciding to spend some moment with the deceased Alpha. “I finally did it.” I said while I clutched a hand to my chest, genuine tears running down my eyes as I sat next to the unmoving body. I thought I heard voices in my head as I looked at him, tears streaming down my face in gushes. The journey for me was over. My revenge, I had served on a platter, as cold as I could. “It is over now,” Carlos rushed to my side, seeing I had fallen to the ground, weeping. He must have thought my tears were for the dead alpha as he tried to pull me up. “It is over,” I said to myself as my hands cut across my face to wipe up the river I had flooded it with. I had finally avenged them. My next step was to run away. It was time to disappear for good.
