Chapter Two

And then the day after my eighteenth birthday my grandmother, Susan was pushing me towards the bathroom after handing me an elegant dark blue dress.         "Shower no Emily" She ordered         "Why? And what's this for?" I gestured the dress.         "The new Alpha is taking over tonight and you've been summoned."         "What?!" I gawked at her, "I thought that the pack had rejected me, especially since I can't shift."         "It's just how it works. Shower now." Her tone left no room for argument or any for questions. "Chris will pick you up in two hours so you'd better be ready and look presentable."         I showered, dried my hair, did a little makeup; just mascara and a my lips but better lipstick and then pulled on the floor length dark blue satin gown. It covered everything but showed my figure which I normally hid with jeans and baggy tees. I wasn't comfortable in it. It wasn't the type of girl that I am.         I went downstairs to find Chris waiting with a pair of cut out detailed heels in his hand.         "Put these on, you can't wear your trainers to the hand over ceremony." He said pointedly looking down at the old, tatty trainers on my feet.         I did as he told me then followed him out to his car. Somewhat wobbly. I'd never worn heels before. He helped me into the passenger seat before getting behind the wheel. We strapped ourselves in and then we were off.         "You'll have to stand at the back during the ceremony. Then there's a ball, you don't know how to dance, do you?" He broke the silence.         "No, I don't. It's fine, I'll just stay out of the way. I'm very good at that."         "That's sensible, keep a low profile. I'd also suggest you steer clear of Samuel if you can. He has a bit of a temper."         "Thank you...for everything"         "Oh, you won't be going back to your grandparents. You'll be given a room in the pack house. Not many pack members live there except the Alpha, Beta and their mates, not that either of them have found their mates yet. And those with nowhere else to go, which at the moment is only you. There are always members coming and going during the work day, from nine to five, but the rest of the time it's quiet."         "Okay, what about my belongings?"         "They'll be there by morning. Kyle, my son, the new Beta will make sure you get there safely."         The car stopped outside a grand building. There was no one around. Chris helped me out of the car and escorted me inside.         "I'll check in with you when the dancing starts, you'll be fine." He whispered before leaving me at the back of the room to hand over to his son.         No one spared me even the slightest glance as the ceremony began. I couldn't see anything, what with only being five foot four inches. I was short for a wolf, even a female one. I copied what everyone else did, then finally bowing my head as the new Alpha was presented. There was an onslaught of applause. After that a live orchestra started playing and couples started dancing. Chris came and checked on me dragging Kyle with him. Kyle was about six foot tall now but had the same brown eyes and blonde hair as when we were small and just like his father. I dipped my head in respect for the new Beta and also from shyness.         "Hello Emily, you've not changed much from when we were kids, do you remember?" Kyle asked.         "Yes I remember." I said quietly.         "Dad's gone now, as has the old Alpha. Gone to enjoy retirement, so I'm in charge of your care. I'm afraid you'll have to wait until the end of the night to see your new home, I have to stay as long as the new Alpha does and dad said no one else can show you around." He said rather gingerly, rubbing the back of his head.         "That's fine, thank you. Excuse me, I need some air." I left the ball room feeling a little light headed. Sam P.O.V         "Who was the redhead Kyle?" I asked, wrapping my arm around his neck. I'd passed her as she went outside. Our eyes had met for a very brief moment but that was all it took for my wolf to start whimpering. A brief glance into her storm cloud coloured eyes was all it took for me to know. She was my mate.         "That redhead is Emily Pearson, the packs ward." Kyle answered in a slightly terse tone.         "The one who's parents vanished twelve years ago leaving her behind?"         "The very one. She moves into the pack house tonight, now she's eighteen."         "Where's she been all these years? Who raised her?"         "Her grandparents raised her. Why all the interest in her? You don't want to... Please don't. She's like a little sister to me, we used to play together as kids. Besides you could have any woman here that you want."         "Hey. You know me Kyle, you know my reputation isn't built on truth, not entirely anyway. You know I've not actually slept with anyone, that I'm waiting for my mate. I have done other stuff, I'll give you that." I couldn't tell him she was my mate, not yet anyway. I needed to meet her first. "I'm going to get some air, enjoy yourself, relax. I won't touch her."         "Sure you won't" Kyle muttered as I left. I could practically hear his eyes rolling.
