CHAPTER ONE
PALMER’S POV
I’ve always wondered what that defining moment in my life would be. At first, I thought it was when I made the major decision of ditching my family and moving in with my dad while still a teenager. Quite an impulsive one that was but it changed my growing up to a better one. I didn’t hate my mother. Hate always felt like too much of a strong word for it. But I couldn’t stand her or my half-sisters. Worst part? None of them ever bothered to call or check on me after that.
Then I believed that the defining moment was when I got into law school, passed the bar and now I was killing it in a profession I’d loved since I was young. Turns out it wasn’t. Yes, I loved law to death but on most days, the clients had me pulling out my hair in complete aggravation. Still, I wouldn’t trade my job for anything else.
Then that douchebag played me, making me believe he was only mine only to find out he was married. He put the worst asshole to shame and well, watching him lose everything to his now officially ex-wife courtesy of me and George, my divorce attorney friend.
Or perhaps it could have almost been that one drunk night when Kyle’s lips ended up against mine. Sure, it still remained a secret between me and my sister but I always wondered what could happen if that secret slipped up. What would his reaction be? Would he be mad? Embarrassed? Apologetic? Or perhaps even regret what happened? Well, I guess I’ll never know.
Finding out all these puzzles about my grandmother and the existence of the supernatural world, had of course been a tumulting experience but representing the brother to Grayson Wyatt and handing them the win on a silver platter, had taken the cake. The case made against him had been too weak to hold up in court. Now as I gathered all my things, pushing them inside my handbag, I could only think of how this case was going to put me on the map with the rest of the high end lawyers.
“You are that brilliant, huh?” I snapped my gaze to Grayson Wyatt, feeling the clamminess under my armpits return. I’d be lying if I said this man right here, in all six feet inches of hotness, didn’t make me think of the dirtiest things. Today, he was dressed in a blue suit with no tie, the stress lines that had started to form on his forehead courtesy of the case, disappearing. In its place was a warm smile that spiked his looks.
“Well, it was an easy one, Mr. Wyatt,” I returned his smile, “I’m very thankful that you picked me to represent you. It was a smart choice,”
He shrugged, “Only the best for the Wyatts,”
“Something has been bothering me,” I took a deep breath then exhaled, “I didn’t want to ask it before for the fear of bringing tension into the case but why me?”
According to Rick, he had requested for me specifically. I was flattered of course but at the same time very much curious. I wasn’t exactly the best lawyer but my success rate was almost at a hundred percent.
“Because you got fire,” He pushed his hands inside his pockets, the smile deepening, “What are you doing tonight, Miss. Butler?”
“It depends,” I crossed my hands, “Why are you asking?”
“I’d like for us to have coffee or a drink of your choice,” he shrugged, “Then maybe we can talk about why exactly I picked you or how I even know you,” he leaned down to whisper in my ear, his cologne drifting into my nose and damn, it was hypnotizing, “Oh, and stop looking at me like you want me to rip those clothes off you. It makes me want to lose my moral compass,”
When he leaned back, I could have sworn I stopped breathing for a second from shock. How the hell did he know I had the filthiest things running through my mind at the sight of him? I swallowed down, choosing to counter him in the most defensive way I know.
“Don’t be so confident, Mr. Wyatt. You are not hot enough to get into my imagination,”
“Well, that's not what you said when you gave me your card that night,” his smile turned into a smirk, “I’ll see you tonight, Miss. Butler,”
He walked past me, leaving me completely dumbfounded. What the hell was he talking about? I’d never given him my card. It was just last month when he requested that I handle his brother’s case. As a matter of fact, I’d only met him three times, including today and he never spoke much to me apart from inquiring on the progress of the case.
“Guess what?” Rick joined me at the staircase leading out of the courthouse. He was in his mid-thirties and very much a lively person. He happened to be the youngest member to make partner in the firm and personally someone I looked up to.
“What? We landed another big fish again?” I questioned, falling into step as we walked down the stairs.
“I just received word that Grayson Wyatt wants to sign exclusively with us,” A proud smile touched his face, “ You know what this means? Every f*****g case, we are gooing to represent him. All this thanks to you,”
“I wouldn’t take all the credit,”
“Yes, you should. At this rate, you will make partner sooner than you can dream,” He wrung his hand over my shoulder, “You and I make a great team. And speaking of which, we are popping champagne for this when we get back to the office,”
“Who gives a f**k its only eleven in the morning?” I agreed, finding myself smiling.
Maybe this really was that defining moment in my life.
