“So, what do you think?” He questioned her, folding his arms as he looked at her with a straight face. She looked at the figures on the paper that he had offered her. She couldn’t believe that she would make so much money just by acting as his wife.

“So, let me get this straight. I just have to be there and pretend to be your wife whenever you need me?” She inquired, and he nodded his head.

“Just for a year?” She questioned.

“Just for a year,” He added on as she pursed her lips together nodding her head.

“Let’s get married” She agreed to be his wife for a year. She didn’t know that just that one year she got married to him was the biggest mistake of her life.

He only wanted a wife to get his grandfather to leave the company with him and she just needed money to get herself out of poverty. She just didn’t know that their marriage came with more than just money and a pretend husband.

Prologue
I am tired. I am tired of everything around me. I want to give it up. I just can’t continue living life like this. Why are some people rich and others poor? Does it have to be like this? I inwardly questioned myself as I looked at the documents that I got from the mailbox. I had so many responsibilities that I had, but life was never working out for me. I was a failure. I walked inside my one-bedroom apartment and walked to the living room. I looked around the living room and everything else was packed nicely. I was getting ready to move out but had nowhere to go. Just then. my phone chose to ring could, I took it out so that I could check on its call before I decided whether I should pick it up or just ignore it. Victoria–my former boss. Why was she calling me? She ended her contract a few months ago. Why would she call me today? “Hello, Victoria. How are you?” I greeted her on the phone as I went through my emails. “Hi Jasmine, Sorry to call you so late. Are you still looking for a job?” She asked me as I sighed heavily. I loved working for her but the way she treated me five months ago, I just can’t go back. I pleaded with her to let me stay at the company, but she was adamant about letting go of me. “Right now? No, I am not. I found something to do,” I said to her just to get her off my back. “Okay, let me know if you change your mind, okay? I might have something for you” She said through the phone as I sighed heavily. “Thank you. Have a good night” I said, cutting the call as I let out an exasperated sigh, everything that. Everythings happening around me frustrated me. In less than a year I have lost my mom and job. I continued packing my boxes, getting ready to leave tomorrow morning. I sold my furniture and everything that I didn’t need. I was going back to my father’s house after being away for over five years. My father runs a diner with my younger sister, who is always getting herself in trouble with the thugs in the neighborhood. I took most of my things to the car so that the next day I wouldn’t have too many things to take to the car. After I finished packing, I pulled out a warm coat to spread on the floor and got another cover myself, and fell asleep. ** The next morning, all I felt was the coldness of the floor and the birds chirping. I slowly opened my eyes as I groaned, trying to wake up. I stood up from the floor, picked up the coats, and folded them nicely. I went to the shower and stood there thinking of what to do next. I wished things wish out for me while in town, but I have to go back home and act like everything is fine. I took off my clothes and got in the shower, turning on the icy cold water. I somehow survived the cold water. I grabbed my bag and got ready. I wore black jeans and a dark blue shirt with a brown trench coat. After I finished getting ready, I started; I grabbed the last box and held it before I looked around the house for the last time. I was really leaving everything behind. My beautiful house with a pleasant view and, of course, clean air. I closed the door behind me and went downstairs to the car before driving off. It took me hours before I arrived at home. I slowly pulled over in my father’s parking space. It was already 9 pm when I arrived. I slowly got out of the car and let out an exasperated sigh before I opened the door to the house. The house was too quiet to what I was used to. “Dad?” I shouted as I walked inside the house. He didn’t answer, even though the lights were still on. I placed my handbag on the table, continuing to look for dad. “Daddy?” I shouted again, going to the garage knowing he might look at his old mustang. I checked, but there was nothing. I wanted to walk away when I noticed someone behind the car sleeping on the ground. I slowly walked there but when I realized it was dad, I ran to him “Dad? Dad! Wake up”. I patted his cheek so that he could wake up, but he wasn’t. “Dad!” I shouted before I took out my phone, calling the emergency line. It went unanswered so I just cut it and ran out to my car, going to drive it inside the carport so that I could take him to the hospital. When I came back to where he was, I found he was awake now, trying to sit up. “Dad? What happened? What were you…?” I panicked as I got closer to him. He groaned as he looked away with disgust. “What the hell are you doing here?” he hissed at me as I swallowed hard, getting closer to him. “I came back, I don’t have a job or any money. Everything went towards mum’s…” I wanted to explain everything to him, but he cut me short. “You can’t stay here!” He said to me as he grabbed his towel and walking out of the carport. “Where will I go? I have nobody” I yelled at top of my voice as he walked away. He didn’t even answer me, but just kept walking away. “Dad!” I shouted when he stopped in his tracks as he turned to look at me. “I am not your father! Now leave my house,” he said, before closing the door before me. I chuckled as I stood there, I had nowhere to go and my father was chasing me away. What the hell was I going to do with my life now? Dad definitely won’t let me inside his house. Where was I going to go? I held on tight to my handbag, thinking about what to do next.
