Meet Mary Dark

973 Words
It was time to leave for work. I spent my time, working in a firm as Jack Hilton's secretary. It was a law firm with a lot to offer. The only disadvantage was that I was away from home most of the time, only gaining enough family time on weekends. I sat in the mirror and pulled my hair up in a traditional ponytail. It was a fixed style of mine except on Sundays. I felt like a ponytail made my face appear smaller and younger. I picked a red lipstick from my makeup purse and used it on my lips. The mirror was a rectangular one with blue edges and it was wide enough to give me half view of the bedroom. I watched Kent's reflection from the mirror as he tried to button his shirt. He worked as a Librarian in a private library, only thirty minutes away from home and got to spend a lot more time with the children. "I'll try being home early today." I suddenly informed him, trying to make conversation and stir up a discussion. I groaned as the red lipstick smeared my white shirt. I rolled my eyes, stood to my feet and walked to the closet to get a replacement. "Okay." He said, knowing I was lying. I never told this to Kent, but, Jack had a special interest in me and would never dismiss me from work early. I wondered why especially since I never considered myself the attractive type. "Natalie will drop the kids off and we-" I began but he cut me short. "There will be no need for that. I'll do the favour." He said instead. I knitted my eyebrows together and waited for his explanation. "Maggie is trying to find a replacement for herself today, and so I don't have to resume until it's eleven." Maggie was the head librarian and I head she was quitting to get married soon. The owner of the library had kept her in charge of such activities and so I was not surprised by this information. "I guess that is great then." I rarely got to see my children in the mornings. They were usually asleep while I left to work and would be in bed by the time I was back home. That was a particular reason I constantly looked forward to the weekends so I could spend more time with them. I noticed how he stared interestingly at the newspaper while I changed into a new shirt. "What is news?" I chuckled with great interest. "Just the casual New Jersey news." He shrugged, "I'm only interested in Stein bank's new ad." He sighed. For as long as I had been married to Kent, his only interest was working with Stein. I'd gain him access if I had the power but I was left with no choice. With a defeated sigh, I pulled him into a hug. "I love you honey, and I'll see you tonight." I added with a relieved kiss. He chuckled, turned me around and slapped one of my butt cheeks. "I'll keep the bed warm for you tonight." He teased with a smirk. "Pastor Kent!" I feigned a scolding, rubbing the spot he had hit. "You are my wife, that is not a sin." He chuckled and helped me with my bag, leading me out the door. "I love you Indan, I hope you always remember this." "And I love you too." I blushed under his statement and leaned in for another kiss... Kent "I'll see you kids soon." I kissed both their foreheads as their respective teachers  received them from me. Sally was quick to wave me off so she could join her friends in the classroom but Adam burst into tears  as I turned to leave. I had to go on one knee and cup his cheeks in my hands. "What did daddy tell you about superheroes?" He sniffed, rubbing his eyes and extending his lips forward. "They are super strong and they fear nothing." He responded. "That is my boy. And, do you know they don't cry? That is for babies." I watched a smile appear on his teacher's face, he brightened up and shook his head. "I'm not a baby, I'm a big boy." He sharply told me and wiped his face dry. "That's my boy." I chuckled, standing to my feet then waving him off. "Thank you Miss Mar." I said to his teacher. I got back into my car and drove out of the  elementary school... * The library was antique-themed. It had to be one of the most satisfying libraries in New Jersey. I flipped the sign that denoted we were open for business and made it to my desk, ready to begin with the day's work. The bell at the door made a sound that notified me a patronizer was here. I looked up from the book I had picked to read to meet the face of a confused looking woman. She was tall with tanned skin and curly hair. I had to look at her feet to confirm that she wasn't wearing heels. She was almost as tall as I was. She clutched on to her hand bag, looking around and nodding as she took the environment in. "May I help you?" I asked with a wide grin,  "is there a  book you would like to..." She did not let me end my statement. "Oh no," she interrupted, slightly shaking her head. "I'm not here as a reader. I'm Maggie's replacement." Her smile was beautiful. Her cheeks were dressed with dimples that glowed when she smiled and there was a little gap between her front teeth. "I'm Mary Dark, and you must be Kent Brooke." She extended her perfectly manicured hands for a shake. I received it from her without hesitation, "I am indeed. It's nice to meet you, Mary." I said. If only I had known this would introduce the beginning of a whole new world...
