Chapter 3

“Lieutenant Lane, I cannot even think what you are going through at the moment and that is the reason that I have decided that you and Lieutenant Duncan are going to take time off from your scheduled reserve for at least time of two weeks,” said Admiral Night and Nat looked at the man with disbelief and shock plainly etched on his face. “But Sir, I think that this will be the best time to go on a mission to blow up everything and to get back hostages and do our duty. There is too much of anger and emotions which are built up inside which might not let us even think about the holiday even when we are in it,” said Nathaniel as Admiral heard him out like he was habituated to and then he dropped the bomb. “Lieutenant, I don’t consider that you did properly get to hear me. I am not requesting you to get a time off or asking you to do it as a favour to me and your troops. It is an order and I expect that you are going to follow that as you have been asked to. The leave time of two weeks is going to be effective immediately, starting from now,” said Admiral Night and Nat knew that it was absolutely pointless talking to him over this because this man did not have any difference with a hard-headed bull and it would like banging your head into a wall. Beside him Nat could feel his friend and buddy, Cadence stiffening up at the words of the Admiral. “Of course Sir,” said Nathaniel as he gave the Admiral a nod along with it and the older man looked satisfied at being able to make them curb to their demands. “So you should be able to enjoy your time starting from today and then you will report back to your base in exactly fourteen days’ time, on nineteenth of this month at morning 1000 hours. But we shall be meeting on fourteenth as well, I guess,” said the Admiral with a tight lipped smile. “But I thought you just now said that we were going on a leave of two weeks Sir?” asked Cadence and the Admiral nodded at him. “True, but then again I did not think that you will be forgetting that it is my retirement party on fourteenth. My wife thought that it would be really romantic to have my retirement party on Valentine ’s Day. And you both are invited to come over and then enjoy yourselves at the party as much as possible. So I am pretty sure that my wife is going to take care of everything there and you both as my protégé will be taken even better care of,” said the Admiral as he gave a smile and the men standing in front knew that it was time to give a smile as well. “After spending a time this long with all of us, retirement is bound to be tough, is it not Admiral?” asked Nat as he tried to give him a wider smile but failed to do so. Even acting was not being possible for him today. “Yes Lieutenant, I guess it is going to be tough for me. And most importantly for my wife after being habituated to me not being there for all these years she is going to get absolutely crazy if I keep staying at home. But I am hoping that this is going to be a different kind of adventure,” said the Admiral but he did not seem very happy about his retirement at all. And that was normal when it came to the SEALs. “I am sure that it is not going to be anything like that Sir. But we are going to take your leave now. We were hoping to talk to Chris’s wife and then look at Christina for some time,” said Cadence as he could feel that both of them needed to get the hell out of the presence of this man. “Of course Lieutenant, there will be nothing that I can do to bring Lieutenant Hawkins back, you know that but if there is anything at all that I can do for the sake of his family then I am going to do it and I have said that to his wife as well but if you could just reassure her one more time, it will be an honorable thing to do,” said the Admiral as he started walking away but then came back and said,” But Lieutenant Lane, I spoke to your father about something which I wanted to discuss with you and he has given his nod to go ahead and now that I know that you are open and have no such connections or thoughts whatsoever I would like to talk to you about something of a very personal and sensitive nature. What do you say that we meet at the Club at around nine so as to talk about it tomorrow night?” “Of course Sir, no problem at all,” said Nat as he could feel his heart tightening in his chest at the mention of his father. That man might not be in his life and he might not want to remain remotely close to him but that sure did not stop him from making overtures in his career and life and definitely involving himself in it. And then he and Cadence started walking in the direction where Cathy, Chris’s wife was waiting with Christina and seeing them coming towards her she gave them a sad smile. Her eyes were still filled with tears and she was trying very hard to strong enough but how could she when she had lost the love of his life and she could not even share her grief with anyone. “Hello boys,” she said as Nat went ahead and hugged her not even caring a whit about the decorum and who were looking at them. And then Cathy started sobbing in his arms whispering things about Chris and he could only pat her head while Cadence took Christina in his arms and went for a stroll with the cooing baby.
