Okafu’s heart thudded in her chest as she walked into the house. Shock and confusion radiated throughout her body that she felt weak at the knees. Her chest rose and fell as her breathing accelerated. Everything felt so surreal and…
Was she just in Ren Amatapa’s car? And he somehow knew where she lived?
Okafu turned to look outside, but he was gone as if she had dreamt the whole thing…
“Huh,” Okafu stared at the empty drive way in disbelief.
“Honey, is that you?” her mother called. She heard her footsteps come closer from the kitchen. “Who was that?”
Okafu turned to her mother. She was wiping her hands on a dishtowel, her eyes focused on the driveway.
“Ahhh,” Okafu said still shocked and confused. She didn’t know what to say. Ren Amatapa wasn’t some guy. He was…Okafu felt chills running up and down her body. Her heart hammered double time against her chest. And her vision blurred a bit.
What was she thinking getting into that man’s car?
Anxiety twisted her stomach and darkness edged at the corners of her eyes ready to swallow her.
Damn! Not again.
Okafu clenched her chest as her heart went crazy in her chest.
“Honey, are you okay?” her mother came closer, and placed her hand to her shoulder. Okafu shook her head. She was having one of her panic attacks. They came out of nowhere, especially when she was stressed. Okafu breathed through it, until she could feel her heart steadying. Her mother hovered over her patting her back and murmuring soothing words.
“Are you alright?” Okafu nodded not sure she could speak just yet. “Thank god. You scared me.”
“Sorry, mom.”
“Do you need something, water, tea?”
“No. I’m gonna go lie down.” Okafo said walking to the stairs.
“Oh, okay. Just call if you need anything,” her mother said walking towards the kitchen. She abruptly stopped, “honey, who was that?”
Okafu’s heart thudded in her chest, causing her whole body to tremble. She grasped the banister for support. She shook her head.
Shit…the mere mention of him affected her so much. What was wrong with her?
“It was no one,” Okafu said and quickly walked to her room. When got there she threw herself on the bed.
She stared at the ceiling, forcing herself not to think about what happened today, until she heard her phone ring next to her. Okafu blinked rapidly forcing her eyes to focus.
Okafu groaned feeling groggy.
“Dammit, I fell asleep,” she moaned brushing her hand across her face. Her hand fell on the bed in defeat.
Not this again, she thought sitting up. She couldn’t afford to go down that rabbit hole again. This time she won’t be able to pull herself out. Okafu reached for her phone not ready to face the fact that she might have to make an appointment with her therapist. She hasn’t been to see her in long time. She had made a lot of progress, she even had her panic attacks under control and was enjoying going to school and making new friends. The horror of her kidnapping was gone. And just one meeting with Ren Amatapa it was all coming back.
Why?
