Chapter 1 Callie's POV... "Happy 17th Birthday Callie!" yelled everyone who was standing in the kitchen as I came down the stairs. A big smile appeared on my face. "You guys didn't have to do this." My best friend, Davis Henry laughed, "of course we did Cal, today's a big day." "Why?" I asked confused. My mother walked in with a big cake with candles. "Make a wish sweetie," said my mother. Mate I thought before blowing the candles. "So why's today a big day?" My older brother, Scott, chuckled, "today you'll find your mate and you'll shift for the first time." My eyes widened, "oh right, I forgot about it." Suddenly my hands became sweaty and I became nervous. What if he rejects me? What if I don't find him? Is he in another pack? All the possibilities crammed into my head. What would I do? "Cal? Callie?" asked Davis looking worried. "Oh sorry, I spaced out," I said shaking my head, trying in vain to clear it but the doubts wouldn't go away. He laughed, "We all noticed." After a slice of cake Davis cleared his throat, "Cal we should get going." I nodded, "thanks again for the cake!" I shouted at the door and hurried to catch up to Scott and Davis who were now halfway to my brother's car. The drive to school was silent but not uncomfortable. The radio was playing in the background and unconsciously I was singing along. At school we found our usual parking space and got out of Scott's car. Scott walked ahead and joined his friends while Davis and I walked slowly to the entrance. I took a deep breath before heading in. "You ok, Cal?" asked Davis looking worried. "What if he rejects me?" I blurted out and his eyes softened. "He would be an i***t for rejecting such a wonderful girl." I blushed and looked away as he chuckled. "Come on Cal, let's get to class." We were suddenly stopped by the wannabes. They blocked our path, their height was an advantage as they towered over us at 6'1''. "Get out of the way," growled Davis and they only laughed. "I don't think so Davis," said their leader before he was pushed out of the way. Their leader, Sam, looked at me again before taking my books and dropping them on the ground. "Wow, how orignal," I said as I started to pick them up. It was really embarrassing they only acted like that so they could join my brother's group, the group of the popular and sluts. I felt waves of anger radiating from someone behind me as I got up with my books. I looked at Sam and his crew, they looked terrified and I smirked knowing my brother was behind me. "Are you messing with my sister?" asked my brother in his Beta voice and the guys instantly submitted. I chuckled as they looked at me begging for my help. I sighed, "Scott, it's alright, they're just being stupid. Besides, now they know not to mess with me, don't you boys," I said smirking at them and they instantly nodded. After that little show I walked to class laughing. Davis had gone to his class on the other side of the building. By lunch I hadn't seen my mate, not that I was complaining. "Who do you think my mate is?" I asked and Davis shrugged before taking a pen out. "Let's see, in all the school there's only about six unmated males. Since your father is the Beta that leaves you with two choices, Beta Daniel from the River Pack or our Alpha James. At least in our school those are your only two options but maybe he doesn't go here maybe he's looking for you." I rolled my eyes and stopped when my eyes landed on the popular table. Jackson, River Pack's Alpha, my brother, James and Daniel were sitting there along with the school sluts. I groaned, "Great, I'll be stuck with one of the school's players or with some stranger that could just as easily be an idiot." I said, taking the fries on my plate and placing them in my mouth. Davis frowned, "you'll be the one to change him, don't be such a pessimist." "That's if he doesn't reject me," I muttered and I heard Davis groan in frustration. "Stop saying that Cal, he's not going to reject you," he said trying to reason with me. "If you say so," I said standing up and heading towards my locker, the bell was about to ring anyway. As the final bell rolled around I still hadn't found my mate which I was glad for, maybe I still had time before that happened. I walked out of the classroom with a big smile and when Davis saw me he stared at me in confusion. "So I take it you found your mate," he said once we were heading outside. "Nope," I said happily, almost skipping, and he stopped, "Cal why are you so happy? Having a mate is a gift you have to treasure." I snorted at his corniness, "yeah whatever you say. Besides I never wanted a mate to begin with." As I turned the corner I was met with a very muscular, hard body and a very intoxicating smell kind of woodsy. My brown eyes met his hazel ones and everything seemed to stop. "Mate," we said in unison. No, this can't be happening. James's POV... "James Knight you get back here right now!" yelled my mother from the kitchen. This morning she found me in bed with a blond girl and believe me, she didn't look too happy. She was pissed. She kept going on and on about how it wasn't right and that I should be trying to find my mate. I rolled my eyes. Haha mate? No thank you that's not for me, besides, I like my player ways. There are no worries, boundaries and especially, no commitment. Yep I like my life and I wasn't going to let a silly little girl change me for 'the greater good', greater good my ass. Walking out and into my sports car I sped off to school. Thank god I was a senior and in a few months I'll be out of here. Sure my dad wanted me to go to college and to law school or business administration so I could "help the pack rise." At school I was met with Scott, my best friend and future Beta, he was walking inside to join our other two friends Jackson and Daniel from our neighboring pack. "Heard you got into trouble," said Scott amused and I grinned, "Nothing serious, just some fun from last night." Scott laughed, "Who was the victim this time?" "Annabelle," I said casually and Scott stared at me confused. "Annabelle is the blonde with green eyes and dresses like a slut." Scott made and oh sound as we walked in. When the juniors noticed our presence they bowed their head in respect and the girls were looking at us with lust filled eyes. Scott wasn't exactly a player, he always told girls he wasn't interested and if they still wanted him it was at their own risk. I laughed as some junior wannabes started messing with a girl to get our attention and join us, it was kind of pathetic. "Isn't that your sister?" I asked Scott and he nodded looking at the ones bullying his sister. "I'll see you in class," was all he said before walking towards them ready to defend his sister. Yikes, those wolves are in big trouble. Scott was very protective of his family, especially his younger sister. "Hey man," said my friend Jackson, Alpha of the River Pack. "Where's Scott?" asked his Beta, Daniel. I shrugged, "he had to deal with some young wolves who were bullying his sister." They laughed, "I wouldn't want to be those wolves," said Jackson and we agreed. "Talking about trouble, we heard you got into trouble with a certain blonde," said Jackson raising his eyebrow. "Which one?" joked Daniel and I punched his arm. "Easy James, you know we're joking," said Daniel faking a pained look. "When did my private life become public?" I asked annoyed. "Since your last victim, what was her name, claimed you were her mate," said Scott with a grin as he walked back towards us. The junior group was long gone and from now and on it was probably going to stay that way. "Daisy and that wasn't true," I said. Trying to lighten the mood Scott spoke, "speaking of mates, how's yours Jackson?" Jackson was about to respond but the bell rang and we realized the halls were deserted. "s**t," said Daniel running to class, Jackson following closely behind. Scott and I laughed as we walked towards our class. "Mr. Knight and Mr. Reyes, you're tardy." Scott nodded and responded while I ignored the teacher by walking to my seat. At lunch we sat in our usual table. The guys were talking about the upcoming football game but I was barely listening, my wolf was restless and I could feel someone's eyes on me. Deciding to ignore the feeling I went back to the conversation but the feeling lingered and something else along with it. When the final bell went off, I still couldn't shake the feeling something was changing or at least, was going to. "Jackson you're so whipped!" said Scott playfully shoving Jackson. "When you have a mate Reyes, good luck not getting whipped," said a grinning Jackson and we all laughed. Suddenly someone bumped into me. She was small and her intoxicating fresh spring aroma filled me. Oh no, this can't be happening. When her beautiful chocolate eyes met mine we froze. "Mate," we whispered so only we could hear. What was I going to do? No I didn't ask for this, I don't want this! Without another word I walked past her and my eyes landed on my next victim. "Hey, Riley right? Wait for me here, I'll be right back." I said and she looked startled but then smiled, typical of a slut, she had a very short skirt that barely covered her and a tight t-shirt with a lot of cleavage. "Sure." I looked back at the girl who was supposedly my mate and I froze. Claire, Clarice, Callie, I didn't know her name, all I knew was she was Scott's sister. Damn I was so dead. "Follow me" I said through the pack mind link and she nodded, her brown eyes confused. I led the way into the woods making sure to keep enough distance between us. Once deep enough in the woods I turned to her. Before I could say anything she spoke, "Listen James, I-I don't know what to say. My name is Callie, I'm Scott's younger sister." I nodded and sighed in defeat. My wolf was already fighting my decision and he purred in delight at the sound of her voice. I shook my head and looked at Callie, "I, James Knight, officially reject you Callie Reyes." Her eyes filled with so much pain but it had to be done. "Bu-but why?" she asked desperately. I turned away and leaned onto a tree. "It doesn't matter," I said with my teeth closed tight. Why couldn't she make this easier? "James, I know we don't really know each other but you don't have to do this," she pleaded with hopeful eyes. My wolf was growling at me, he wanted her, I didn't. I shook my head and looked at her, her eyes were glassy and filled with tears she was holding back. "I'm sorry, goodbye Callie, I hope you get what you deserve." I walked past her and she didn't say anything until I was almost too far to hear her say, "I hope you get what you deserve too." Then I was gone and I could feel my wolf, he was mad, furious, and all he wanted to do was go back and comfort his broken mate. I returned back to the girl I'd left back in school, the guys were nowhere to be seen, thank god, I don't think I'd be able to handle Scott's questioning face. Riley and I walked to my car, she knew where we were going, all the sluts knew where I took them. When I got home my mother looked disappointed and my father disapprovingly at me. Ignoring them both I took the girl up to my room for a night to remember or at least a night to remember for her.
