CHAPTER TWENTY Noting a bunch of police personnel gathered away from the small group of firies continuing to make the burnt structure safe, and State Emergency Service volunteers setting up lights, Georgie took a circuitous route to avoid them all. By the time she’d joined the neighbour, he’d sunk to his haunches, hanging his chin low into his chest. His heaving sobs pierced into her as much as his broken posture. She laid a hand on his shoulder as she hunkered down by his side, giving silent comfort until his tears were spent.
