CHAPTER 1

2312 Words
“Hurry up, Emmy, it's almost ten!" Grams shouts from the kitchen and I instinctively glance at my wall clock. Shit! It's a quarter to 10 a.m. and the driver should be here in the next fifteen minutes. Frantically, I place my hairdryer on the dressing table, toss the wet towel in the laundry basket and then I hastily grab my luggage bag and stride towards my small wardrobe. I get busy grabbing my not so expensive clothes and packing them neatly inside my bag while I cuss at how fast time flies. You won’t believe this, but I woke up at six in the morning, and don’t even ask what I have been doing since then, I have no f*****g idea. I should be in the living area waiting patiently for the driver, but here I am frantically packing my clothes. I am ever rushing at the last minute, and Grams hates it. I know she is super mad at me right now. "Emmy, if I call you one more time-" "Will be out in a few," I shout back as I grab my dryer, curling iron, and a few more things from the nightstand and I toss them in the bag. I let my eyes quickly scan around to make sure that I haven’t left any important thing behind and once I am satisfied, I clutch the luggage handle and I can't help the sad smile that pulls on my lips as I drag the bag out to the living area. I will miss my tiny bedroom. Well, I know it was tiny, but it was warm and cozy. "Did you pack everything you might need?" Grams asks me when I step inside the living area and I nod. "I think I am all ready to go," I say as I set the bag next to the coffee table and I proceed to sit next to her. "I can’t believe you are joining college in three days," she tells me excitedly, flashing me a beautiful smile and I smile right back. "Yeah, me too." "I am so happy for you, sweety." "Thanks, Grams." "Quit sulking already, is this not what you've always wanted?" "I know, but I feel kinda sad." I am happy and sad at the same time. Happy because I will be joining college, it's like a dream come true, and sad since I am leaving Grams all alone. "I will miss you so much," I say, my voice breaking with emotions and she gives me a small smile. "Come here," she opens her arms wide for me and I don't even waste a beat, I practically throw myself in them and she engulfs me in a very tight and warm embrace. See, I have been living with Grams since forever and she is like my closest friend, the two of us are super close. My mom and I moved here a month after my dad died, twelve years ago and I was only six. Two months later, mom left to work for the Andersons as their house manager, leaving me under my grandmother's care. It has always been just the two of us and it is kinda hard for me to say goodbye. I know it’s a two hours’ drive and I will be visiting her on the weekends, but honestly, it won’t be the same for the two of us. "I will miss you too, sweety." "I wish I could take you with me." I am not kidding. "I know, but how about you go, study hard and come back for me?" I chuckle lightly. "That's exactly what I want," I say just as someone knocks on our door. "I think that's him," Grams says, loosening her grip on me and I begrudgingly pull away. Given a chance, I could stay in her warm embrace for the rest of my life. I always feel safe and loved and needed. "I will get the door," I say while I stand up, and I blink rapidly to push my tears back as I walk towards the door. I take a deep breath to calm myself down, put on a smiley face as I pull the door open and I stare at the most beautiful grey eyes that I have ever seen. I don't know what I was expecting, but I wasn't braced for such a striking sight. An extremely handsome guy standing at our doorstep with a killer smile, busy twirling his car key on his finger? It is quite the sight. I should welcome him inside, but instead, I just stand there, shamelessly staring at his masculine beauty. Dude is hot as hell. He is rocking a pair of black jeans, a white t-shirt, and a pair of black Nike sneakers. Everything about him screams expensive, and I wonder how much the Andersons pay him to afford such expensive outfits. “You must be Emily?” He asks, after a long minute of checking him out and I snap out of my reverie. Get a grip, Emmy! "Yeah, that's me." I say, tucking a few strands of my curls behind my ears and he smiles at me, stretching his hand to shake mine. I don't know how in my super dazed mind I manage to smile back, let alone shake his hand. “I am Justin, your ride.” His smile broadens, fully displaying his nice set of teeth, and damn! He has a nice smile, so captivating and warm and beautiful. “You are the driver?” I ask, raising a skeptical eyebrow at him and he shakes his head. “No, our driver had an emergency to attend to so dad sent me instead.” Whoa! He is an Anderson? That explains the expensive taste in fashion. "Oh, I am sorry. I thought-" "It's okay, I hope we didn't inconvenience you?" "No, not at all," I say, flashing him a smile as I step aside. "Please, forgive my manners." "Thank you." He steps inside, closing the door behind him and he follows me to the living area. “Grams, this is Justin Anderson," I tell my grandmother and then I glance at Justin. "This is my granny." "It's nice to finally meet you two," Justin says as they both shake hands. "Liz has told us so much about you." "All good I hope?" She asks as he ushers Justin to the opposite couch. "All good." He answers and we all chuckle. “She said hello.” “I miss her so much,” Grams says and I know she means it. “She misses you two so much, there is no single day she doesn’t talk about you.” I just smile as watch the two talk about my mom, and I am so glad that I am finally getting a chance to spend more time with her. Maybe we can finally build a relationship. It's not like we don't have one, but I only get to spend time with her one or two weeks in twelve months and I have always wanted more time with her ever since I was little. I have always wanted more than just a week in a whole f*****g year, I have always wanted more than our phone conversation and looks like God finally granted my wish after all these years and I am so excited. “I made some samosas," Grams says a few minutes later and it takes everything in me not to do my happy dance in front of Justin. "Wow, I love samosas," Justin says excitedly, and that takes me by surprise. I honestly expected him to say 'no thank you', he is really humble. "I will be right back.” Grams excuses herself, and she walks to the kitchen, and I am left alone with Justin. "You are ready, right?" He asks me, eyes glancing at my luggage bag and I nod while I take Gram's position. A few minutes later she walks back carrying a serving tray in her hands and as she places it on the coffee table, my mouth starts to water at the sight of the delicious samosas. I freaking love food and I am not ashamed of it. "Coffee?" She asks Justin and he nods. "I will get the coffee," I offer, as I stand up and I grab one of the mouth-watering samosas. Justin laughs when Grams scolds me, and I can't help but smile as I take a small bite and I end up moaning on my way to the kitchen. This is so f*****g delicious! God, I will miss Grams' delicacies. She is the best cook in the whole world and it’s not even debatable. I grab two mugs from the cabinet, the coffee kettle and then I walk out of the kitchen to serve Justin and my grandmother. I am not a big fan of coffee, by the way, I prefer tea. *** "And I thought Liz was the best cook," Justin says, after breakfast and I chuckle. "You thought wrong," I say laughing alongside them. "Grams will forever carry that title." "I strongly agree," Justin seconds and a smug smile pulls on my grandmother’s lips. "Enough of the praises, you two," She says as she packs the remainders in a bag and she hands it to me. "Blessing your journey with my delicacies." “You are the best, Grams.” I hug her and then I take my luggage bag. "I'll get that," Justin offers but I shake my head. I can’t let him carry my bag, I mean, he is a rich kid and these people have people who do everything for them. "It's okay, I am-" he cuts me in. "Emmy, I insist." I hesitate for a second and then I step aside. "Thank you." "It's nothing," he smiles as he carries the bag, and Grams and I follow him outside. "Oh my God!" I gasp at the midnight blue V8 Vantage that's parked on our lawn. Okay, I know the Andersons are hella rich, but I didn’t expect him to be driving such an expensive car. A f*****g Aston Martin V8 Vantage. I can't believe I am about to ride in this car. “Well, it’s happening,” Jus says and I turn towards him feeling a little embarrassed. “Did I say that out loud?” I ask and he shakes his head. I look at him a little bit confused, and I narrow my eyes at him. “I am psychic." He tells me with a serious expression on his face and I break down laughing. “You don’t believe me?” “Try again.” I say amidst laughter and he chuckles as he shakes his head. "You love cars, don’t you?" "No, I am fascinated with them," I say, walking towards his car, and I wish you could see my smile as I run my index finger on it. “A car fanatic.” “My brother too, he loves cars.” He says as he put my luggage bag in the trunk. I turn towards my grandmother who is watching us with a smile on her face and a sudden sadness engulfs me as I walk towards her. It’s time to say goodbye. “It was nice meeting you, Grams, and thank you for the delicious samosas,” Justin tells her, as he gets his wallet from his pocket and he takes out a few notes. “From mom, and she said hello.” “She is so kind, tell her I said thank you, and please take care of my grandkid for me.” “You can count on me.” He says and smiles at me. “I will be in the car.” He says goodbye to Grams and then he walks to the car to give us some privacy. “Oh, Emmy,” Grams says, taking my hands in hers. “You’ve grown into such a beautiful girl. Please be the responsible girl that I have raised you to be...” She starts the not so welcome lecture and I know where this is going. Study hard, don’t play around with boys… “Grams, I have to go. We can’t keep him waiting.” I say, glancing at Justin who is leaning on his car, busy scrolling his phone. “Way to avoid my lecture huh?” She asks and I shake my head laughing. She knows me too well. “I love you so much, Emmy, please take care of yourself for me.” She says, cupping my face in her warm palms and I smile at her. “I will, love you.” “I love you more.” She pulls me into a tight bear hug, and I blink rapidly to keep my tears at bay when she starts to fondle my back. God, I really hate goodbyes. “I will miss you.” “I know baby, I will miss you too. So much.” She says loosening her grip on me and I pull away. “We don’t want to keep him waiting, remember.” She tells me and I smile. "That's my phrase, Grams." She chuckles and she leans in to kiss my forehead. "Call me when you get there." I nod and with a sad smile on my face, I walk towards the car. I thank Justin when he gets the door for me, and I get busy buckling up as he rounds the car to the driver’s seat. I wave my grandmother goodbye as Justin starts the car, and tears fill my eyes as I watch her from the side view mirror as we drive out of the compound. I will miss her. Hey guys!
