Blood and Victory Academy I

“Ash Miller!” it was not that uncommon to hear my name being called around here. “Stop it right there, young lady!” “Well…you should learn how to run faster then!” I mocked. I laughed at my teacher’s sight. I did not know her name but I knew that she was our Physics teacher. Her chestnut hair was getting messy because of the wind, her hazelnut eyes were clearly frustrated, and I would not forget the clicking sound of her five-inch stilettos. Every week, a different teacher would always run to catch me and bring me to detention…but they always failed. It was music in my ears whenever I heard my name being called by them. It brought joy to my life. Before I could even run farther away from my Physics teacher, I fell on my behind when I bumped onto someone. “Miss Miller,” the deep voice greeted. I looked up and grinned nervously, “H-Hello, Mr. Principal,” His grey hair was almost too hard not to notice. He was our school principal. I guessed that he was already in his late sixties’. His fashion sense was very modern for his age since he was wearing this white buttoned-up shirt and black slacks. This was not the first time that I had seen him since I was a very notorious kid here in high school…but I needed to admit that I was still quite nervous whenever he was involved. “Your mother is here,” the principal informed me. “I need to have a talk to the both of you,” “Do I have a say on this?” I sighed. I did not want my mother in here. Did they call her? Well, as if calling her would change my ways. “Not quite,” he answered. “Please follow me,” I stood up from the floor and glared at the principal’s back. Wasn’t he used to my attitude already? Why did he need to call for my mother? The silence of our walk to the principal’s office was deafening. We went inside the principal’s office and I did not forget not to make any form of eye contact with my mother. My mother and I were never close. I was grateful of having her but I was not a sweet child she thought that I would be. I noticed that she was looking anywhere but me. We were like twins because I just looked like a younger version of her. My physical appearance came from my mother starting from my dark brown wavy hair that fell past my waist, my hazelnut eyes that I heard made my father fall in love with her, and my tall build that I stood five foot nine, the same as her. She also raised me on her own. I did not know where my father was nor did I ask of where he went. If he was not there when I grew up, I could not expect anything from him. I did not even know of his name. All I knew was that my mother still loved my father even though he was gone. My mother had a strong personality. She was a frank woman who never feared to tell people of what she honestly thought. Maybe it was hereditary that was why I became like this. I sat on the available chair in front of my mother and the principal sat on the principal’s chair…obviously. “Mrs. Miller…” the principal started. “I’m guessing that you already know the reason of why you were called here, right?” “Of course she knows,” I rolled my eyes. “All mothers are a know-it-all,” My mother decided to ignore me when she said, “Of course. You want me to transfer her to another school, am I right?” “Vandalizing, skipping school, pranking and talking back to tea—“ “Don’t forget the time when I locked our Biology teacher inside the room,” I smirked proudly at the principal. “See, Mrs. Miller?” the principal decided to ignore me too when he just talked to my mother. “Even your child admitted to her own crimes. We can’t keep her in here any longer. She is a bad example for the students,” “I understand,” my mother sighed. “I will have her transfer schools so thank you for keeping up with her for the past two years,” “Thank you for understanding,” the principal stood up and offered an arm towards my mother. My mother also stood up, took his hand, and shook it. Well…what school was I going to ruin next? *** My mother did not say anything until we were back in our house. “Is it that impossible for you not to do the things that you did?” Our house was not that big but it was spacious because my mother and I were the only ones living in it. The walls inside our house were white and with a few things inside it. There was not anything extraordinary or extravagant inside our house. “Duh?” I rolled my eyes. “Tell me, Ash,” she looked at me straight into the eyes. “Why did you become like that? I raised you well as far as I’m concerned,” “You did,” I agreed. “But this is what I like to do,” “Are you like that because you didn’t grow up with your father?” “Nah…” I yawned. “This has nothing to do with him and I have nothing to do with him. I think he is not beneficial to my existence at all,” My mother sat on the sofa and looked down on the floor, “Since you already turned eighteen last month, I guess it’s time to transfer you to the school where your father and I graduated,” “Why don’t I just work and not study?” I asked her. I did not want to go to school. School was boring for me. “No,” she shook her head. “You need to go to B.A.V. Academy,” “B.A.V. Academy?” I repeated. It was the first time that I heard of that school. “Blood and Victory Academy,” I chuckled at her response, “Blood and Victory Academy? Really, mom? Are you kidding me? Who would name a school…that?” I did not know that my mother liked to joke around. Maybe she was not angry at me that was why she had the guts to say something so funny. “I’m not kidding, Ash,” she answered. “It’s a school where your father and I met,” “I told you that I have nothing to do with my father,” I rolled my eyes. “And what makes that school different from other schools? Will that school be able to make someone like me a good child, huh?” “It’s not a normal school…and you’re not a normal child either,” “Thanks for telling me that,” I said sarcastically. She stood up from sitting and walked towards my direction until we were face to face, “We’re not a normal family,” “Another additional information that I already kne—“ “Your cousin, Kelly, is already in there,” she informed. “You will meet her and she will tell you all you need to know about that school and about our family. Since she turned eighteen last year, she was already enrolled for a year. You’re in the right age to know everything about us now,” I raised an eyebrow at her, “Why do you sound like you’re sending me to some kind of hell?” “I don’t know how you will view it,” she placed both of her hands on my shoulders. “But this is destiny, Ash…and you can’t escape destiny. Pack your bags since it’s a boarding school. We’re leaving tomorrow morning,” I pushed both of her hands away and immediately walked away from her. I needed to get away from my mother so I went straight to my room. My mother was being weird. And it was really creepy. *** I did not talk to my mother when she drove me to my new school. Maybe she was turning crazy that was why she said all those things. I kind of wondered why she drove our way in such an isolated place. Why was the school hidden from the public eye? Trees surrounded us and the road was too narrow. After an hour of driving, a beautiful building came into the view. The place was huge…and very vintage looking. It looked like it came straight out of a brochure of Italy. The whole building was covered in bricks. I would not call it a building…it looked like a mansion instead. I honestly would not be surprised if I saw the King and Queen of England in there. The gates that protected the academy opened automatically. My mother continued driving and stopped at the entrance of the academy. She went out of the car and I went out second. A good looking man who was around my mother’s age came to greet us. “Elizabeth Miller,” the man smiled. I could admit that the man was handsome with his raven-coloured hair that was put into a bun on the back of his head. He was not wearing anything fancy but a plain white shirt and black slacks suited him very well. His brown eyes lit up at the sight of my mother. Oh…somebody had a crush on my mother. “Christopher,” my mother flashed him a smile and hugged him. “It’s been years since I last saw you,” “It’s a pleasure to see you again, Ellie,” he pulled away from the hug and smiled back at her. “I’m assuming that this is your daughter, Ash?” he turned his attention to me. “She is,” my mother nodded. “I’m sorry for the short notice but I can transfer her here, right?” “Of course you can,” Christopher responded. “This is just a little favour to do for the legendary Elizabeth Miller,” Legendary? What the hell? Even this guy was weird. *** “Ash!” someone tackled me into a hug the moment I stepped inside the Dean’s office. Christopher later told me that he was the current Dean of the academy after my mother left me in his hands. “Long time no see, Kelly,” I hugged her back. Kelly was my cousin from my mother’s side. Her mother was the younger sister of my mother. She had got this straight blonde hair that she inherited from her father, blue eyes that I could say that sparkled…literally, and she was also around my height. We grew up together but went our separate ways when our mothers got into a fight. I didn’t have an idea if our mothers were in good terms now but aside from that, I was happy to see my cousin again. “It’s nice to see a reunion here,” Christopher commented. “But we have some matters to discuss first,” “Of course,” Kelly agreed. “You’re going to be roommates with your cousin,” Christopher told me. “Classes start at eight o’ clock in the morning until five o’ clock in the afternoon. You can go out of the academy every weekend or when there are missions for you,” “Wait…” I tried to sink the words into my mind. “Missions?” Was I hearing things right? I could not quite believe my ears. Why would we have missions here in high school? Oh…maybe he was talking about school trips or something like that. “But the academy will only send you to missions if you’re capable of doing it that’s why you need to train. We will sort you into a class after every month. There are five types of classes here, Class One up to Class Five. Class One as the highest and Class Five as the lowest,” “Excuse me…sir,” I frowned. “…but I don’t quite get what you’re saying. Why do we need to get sorted out after school trips? Do we have a test after every school trip? Is the ranking based on intelligence? Because let me tell you, I don’t even go to class back in my old school,” “What are you talking about, Ash?” Kelly asked me, confusion was obvious in her voice. “No,” I shook my head. “What are you talking about?” Why was everyone here acting so weird? “Haven’t your mother told you anything yet?” Christopher wondered. “I thought that she already briefed you with the information,” I shook my head once again, “She didn’t tell me anything. And what was up with you calling her ‘the legendary Elizabeth Miller’?” “Because she is,” Kelly answered for Christopher. “You do know that your mother studied here, right?” I nodded. “Well…everyone here considers her as the best vampire hunter in the whole wide world.”
