Chapter 1

3760 Words
**Abey's POV** He found me outside the apartment complex he's staying in. I've seen him passing by before but he did not notice me on the furthest corner by the bushes. I never made much noise because I was afraid. Everything else seems too noisy that it frightened me, everything that moved seemed like they will hurt me and I'm too afraid to move to protect myself, especially since I lost my mom.   He was hard not to notice. He was tall, unlike the others that pass by. He seemed timid and unfriendly but, he's the only one who's really quiet.   He was wearing a different color, but same kind droopy clothes that are bigger than his body, his hair was kept undone and his bangs were almost to his eyes that's hidden under his specs.  His glasses brimmed that night when he found me. I was cold and wet and shivering under the heavy rain. Leaning hard against the corner, I turn my face away from him because I was so afraid. I wanted to run but I had to conserve the energy left in my body. I was left here for days now and I'm so hungry that I felt like the world is starting to spin fast around me. Then, he calls for me, trying to copy how I speak in the softest, calm voice but I did couldn't respond or even tell him to go away. He's a stranger and he terrifies me. Before the rain poured today, I was hurt by the little ones who were poking me with sticks. No matter how much I shouted and screamed for them to go away, they couldn't understand me and just kept poking while giggling as if my suffering was amusing and it had me so exhausted.  "Don't be afraid..." he said, voice deep and calm as he crouched down with his umbrella, providing me a temporary shelter from the rain. "Here...." he muttered, tempting me, finger slowly closing in. His fingers smelt good, like sweetmeat so I let my instinct take over my fear and started sniffing, inching closer to find the food he's hiding in his hand. Soon, I felt him touch me, patting my head gently and I let him because of the food I was looking for. However, the warmth of his hand was like my mom's. "Mom?" I called out softly. "Do you wanna come home with me?" He asked. "I want my mom," I replied. "Let's get you out of this rain." He said softly while caressing me gently. Unknowingly, my body chased his warmth and without fighting back, I let him carry me where the warmest, softest feeling I've felt my whole life had me curling up, feeling comfortable instantly and forgetting that he's a stranger.  I usually feel that every stranger is dangerous but not this one. He took me inside a shelter and immediately covered me with a towel inside a bright room where warm water was pouring down. "We'll have to clean you up first, okay? Then you'll be having your dinner." He said, smiling as he takes off his jacket. I just stared at him, shivering on my spot before looking around the room. The unfamiliar warmth of the place that is completely different from the cold of the outside had me feeling safe immediately. After struggling from his grip as I was being drenched yet again by water warm water that I hated at first, I eventually stop fighting. I felt too weak at the moment that fighting off this man's grip upon my body is useless. He kept on hushing me and telling me that it's alright with the softness of his deep voice resounding inside this place. After the bath, he dried me with another towel in front of a warm, strong wind that produces a loud sound that had terrified me once again. I tried hiding under the towel but it also was no use as he kept on taking me out of it and held me firmly. As promised, I had the greatest meal of my life while he watches me devour the food. He kept telling me to take it slow, taking the bowl away whenever I take a large bite. I protested, paws clinging onto the bowl which he returned yet again, chuckling before giving it back to me.   Never had I tasted this food before. I wanted more but he told me it's bad to overeat as he scratching my head softly. However, he still gave me milk for my last meal. Needless to say, Kevin became my Human that faithful day and he basically does whatever I wanted ever since. He named me Abey and I like it so much so that whenever he calls me with that name, I would run to where he is. He does everything for me. He gives me light scratches on my head and on my back whenever I want him to. He'd give me food whenever I'm hungry and he'll give me warm baths occasionally. He plays with me and even bought me my own house I like so much - a huge, soft house-bed in a form of an orange fish that he kept inside his room, well... our room. He even set an alarm for my breakfast tho I always wake him up first before his phone buzzes off. I would poke his face every day to get him up from bed to feed me. If he does not budge, I'd resort to licking any part of this face and if that doesn't work, I will softly bite either his nose or his lower lip as the last resort. There were rules inside our home but... I get away with everything and he would just sigh it out. No knocking over things off the shelf. No playing with the tissue roll inside the bathroom. No scratching on the walls or the couch. He bought me a wooden post so that's the only place I can sharpen my claws. No wasting of food or milk. And my least favorite, staying out the bathroom when he's inside. I hated it when he leaves me alone. I hated it when he closes doors especially when he goes out the only brown door inside our home. He'd not come back for the whole day. He comes back when it's starting to get dark. He leaves something for me to eat but I hated to eat alone so I always wait patiently, looking at the door while lying on the couch. Another thing that I hated is that other humans he brought home a long time ago and I hoped to never see her again. She had full bangs and long hair which has the same color as my fur and when she saw me, she immediately picked me up and hugged me tightly. I hated being squeezed tightly so I fought my way out the death-hug. She reeked of another cat's scent which made me hiss and loath her to death. That was the first and the last time I saw her, thank goodness! Today, he came back pretty late. The house was already so dark but I can still see clearly. I immediately hopped down the couch and sat in front of the door when I heard his keys chiming behind it. I look up to the knob eagerly and when it turned, I get ready on my feet. Then, the door open and I immediately jumped at him. He was quick to catch me in his arms as usual. "Did you miss me?" He chuckled as I sniff the unfamiliar sent of something oozing off his body. This is the first time I've smelled something like this off him. "Where have you been? I've been waiting for so long!" I whined, burying my face and rubbing it on his chest at the same time. "I'm hungry... let's go eat!" He closed the door behind him and walk inside, carrying a box with his other hand. "You didn't eat your food again, Abey." He sighed when he found my bowl on the floor untouched. "Because I want to eat together with you," I answered, hopping down his arm to the dining table. "Aren't you hungry?" He asked. "I've told you already. I. Am. Hungggryyy. Next time, come home early so I can eat early." I said, sitting up on the table. He took my bowl from the floor and set it on the table in front of me. I look at it as he says, "You'll eat that, Abey... stop wasting food, okay?" "No. It isn't fresh... Give me a new one." I retorted, looking at him as he went to get his plate on the counter. "I want a new one, Kevin," I repeated but he seemed not to listen. "I don't like this anymore," I complained, looking down at my bowl. I then push it towards the edge of the table where it fell off, making a clanking noise as it hit the wooden floor. I smiled when he jumped in surprise. That always works, taking his attention back to me. "Hey! Abey?! " He yelled, running back to the table before crouching down on the floor and begin to gather the pellets that scattered all over the floor. "I told you, I want a new one." I walked towards the edge and look down on him while he cleans the mess for me. He then looks up to me with a glare behind his glasses. "You're not gonna get any dinner for this." "What?!" I asked. He then stood up with the food back in my bowl before going to the sink. I immediately hopped down the table, running towards him and begin to rub my body around his legs, "I'm sorry, Kev. I won't do it again... I just wanted fresh food and not the one that's been out aired out the whole day, please?" I said sweetly. He then walks back to the table with my bowl. I instantly smelled the fresh aroma of the wet food I love so much. "Hey! That's wet food! Wet food!" I excitedly walk with him. He then tapped the table as he looks down on me with a smile. I hopped back up the upon the table where I was greeted with the great fresh, fishy aroma of the wet cat food just for me. "Thank you!" I happily cheered. But, I did not dig in instantly. I want to eat with him so I just sat there while I wait for him to set his plate. However, he brought the box he was holding earlier and open it. It smelled sweet. I'm not allowed to eat sweets but... Curious, I stood and look over to it and saw some sort of something of brown color with a stick standing in the middle. "It's my birthday today, Abey. You need to wish me a happy birthday, okay?" He smiled. "Birthday?" I asked, not knowing the meaning of what he said. After slicing that brown thing and put a portion of it on his plate, he then took the stick and lighted it which made sparkles. I was surprised at first but it did not frighten me. It smelled like it's burning but it's pretty. I tried touching it but it's too hot for my paw so I just stared at it, casually sniffing. "Aren't you gonna sing for me?" He asked. "I have no I idea what you're saying..." I rolled my eyes before licking paw then smears it on my face to clean it off. "You know, sometimes... I think you can understand me. You always meow whenever I talk to you." He chuckled. "I do. Just... not right now I don't. I have no idea what a birthday is and why you want me to sing." I said, continuing to clean my face. "I'm glad I found you, Abey... you gave me a purpose to come home every day and rest." He sighed, keeping an awful smile which did not seem like he's truly happy. "Now that you mentioned it, where are you disappearing to every day?" I asked. "I wish, you're just like me... a person." He said, smiling painfully. "At least, I'll have someone I really can talk to..." He chuckled again. "Why, you're already talking to me? I understand you perfectly but you're the one who can't understand what I'm saying, but it's okay... nobody's perfect, Kevin. I won't leave you beyond your imperfections..." I replied, standing up as I walk to him. I sensed the distress inside his chest that he's hiding. The only way I know to comfort him is rubbing my face against his face which I know he liked because he would always smile sweetly every time I do it. "I love you, Kevin... don't be sad," I said, now licking his cheek which made him giggle softly. "No one remembered my birthday, Abey..." He then whispered. "I really don't know what the hell a birthday is but if it's important to you, then... I'll remember. Just, don't be sad." I replied. Then, suddenly, I tasted something salty dripping as I lick his cheek. He's leaking salty water from his eyes. It's the first time he did this. I felt him stressing in the past but not accompanied by this salty water and it's making me worry. Whatever this birthday is, it's important to him. "Happy birthday..." I said softly. I wanted to sing but I don't know how to. I kept rubbing my face all over his with both paws by his shoulder in hopes to stop the saltwater from leaking out if his eyes. He then chuckled, stroking my body from nape to back, "Okay... I won't cry... Thanks for making me feel better, Abey." "Don't leak from your eyes anymore, okay? I hate the taste." I replied. He then cups my whole head with his huge hands and looks straight in my eyes, "I love you so much, Abey... You're the perfect birthday gift even if it was 20 months ago... Hey, you're birthday is coming in 4 months. We've never celebrated your special day." "I have a birthday?" I asked. "Your meows are really freaking me out sometimes. I feel like we're having conversations." He muttered, rubbing my forehead with both his thumbs. "Lisa brought her cat to work one time and he doesn't meow as you do." "We are having a conversation, Kevin. Your reply just doesn't answer mine. And who's Lisa? How dare you talk to me about another cat?" I replied and he smiled widely. "We'll celebrate your birthday. I'll be definitely home on your special day." He whispered before he kissed my forehead. I learned that during birthdays, that stick with light is required because, on my birthday, he put that stick on top of my most favorite wet food and lighted it. He then starts clapping and singing. "Oh.. is that how you sing happy birthday... You should've told me before so I could've sung for you." I said as I stand before my food. "Make a wish, Abey." He smiled sweetly. A wish... I know what wishes are but I never wished for anything before. Even when I lost my mom, I never thought of wishing she would find me. Now that I think about it, I've forgotten everything ever since Kevin took me home. But, there are only two things I want. "I wish you'd always smile like that, Kevin," I said as I look up to him. I always love to look at those lips that stretch to a perfect, genuine smile. My other wish had been imprinted form me since his birthday, "And I wish, the wish when you had your birthday comes true so you will understand me." He wants to have someone he could talk to. He talks to me but it's not exactly conversing. I'm always communicating with him but he does not understand everything that comes out my mouth... all he's hearing are my meows and it's making me frustrated especially at times that I feel his distress. He always talks to me but he never understood any of the words I'm saying to comfort him. I love Kevin. Human or not, I love him because he loves me back. I could feel it with every word he says and the things he does for me. I lost my mom and my siblings but, I found him. And I'll do my best to make him happy in return from saving me and taking care of me. "I wanna be a person so you'd be smiling... Always." He stared at me for a while before his brows furrows. "You're really weird... that was a lot of meows... But! I take that as your wish so I'll blow the candle for you." He soon blows the light before taking the stick out where I then was able to eat the most delicious, tastiest wet food I've had in my entire life while he gives me soft caresses on my back. We spent the day together. He never left the house like he usually does and he played with me all day with that toy mouse I'd hunt and that red dot that only seems to appear whenever he's home. I never caught that red dot thing even if I had it inside my paws millions of times over. But whatever, it's still fun chasing it. Darkness came and I was sitting by the window, watching other humans walk outside. I wasn't allowed outside nor do I want to go out. Suddenly, I heard groaning and heavy breathing inside our room. I went there out of curiosity. The door was slightly opened so I squeezed myself in. The room was dark and the only source of light was coming from what he calls his computer. He's sitting in front of it with cords connected to his ears. I sat behind the door as I look at how breathless he was while his eyes were fixed on the computer. Then, I noticed his hand was squeezing his tail, stroking it up and down. My human has a weird tail. It's in front and not on the back and I never saw it move as mine does. I saw it a couple of times whenever he forgets to close the bathroom door. I never liked my tail to be touched and squeezing hard like what he's doing would hurt me so much. However, he's stroking it so hard but it seemed like it doesn't hurt him, but it's making him breathless. "Kevin... what are you doing?" I asked, curious since this is the first time he did something to his tail. Is this something humans commonly do? I sat still on the same spot but he did not respond. Maybe those cords connected to his ears is blocking his hearing. However, the movement of his hand picks up the pace and he starts groaning again. His other hand then took the tissue roll sitting on top of the desk. I was never allowed to play with tissue rolls tho I get away with it at times. He suddenly groaned out loud at the same time he covered his tail with a long ply he pulled from the tissue roll. The tissue fell over and rolled towards me where he finally noticed my existence. His eyes suddenly widened at the sight of my form staring at him. "Does that hurt?" I asked. He still didn't respond but he was looking directly at me, frozen in his seat. Must be because it hurt... "Fuck... I need a girlfriend." I sighed, leaning back against the chair. I then kicked the rollback to him, "Girlfriend?" I asked, now chasing the tissue roll but before I could even catch it, he was able to pick it up. "Sorry, you had to see that... Geez, even if you're a cat, it's still embarrassing." He said before sighing once again. He then hides his tail then wipe his hand with a towel. "It's alright... just don't touch my tail the way you touch yours or I'll scratch you for real..." I replied, looking up to him. "I never liked anyone besides Lisa. But... had to move on now... she's taken." He sighed again. "Lisa again? Who is Lisa?" I asked, now whining before hopping on to his lap. He soon strokes my head before gently scratching, "No one will ever notice me anyway..." He smiled painfully. "What do you mean?" My head tilted as I ask. He takes off his glasses and put it above the desk, "I'm sure if I take you to meet Leo, he'll like you but, I hate how cats mate." "Is Leo a cat?... Don't take me for mating again, it really freakin' hurt in the neck, Kev." He once took me to a place with a lot of cats before. I felt so hot that time and a tomcat has taken a liking on me. However, before we could even mate, Kev sprayed that tomcat with water to get away from me. I screamed out pain even if I was ready. My nape was bleeding at that time because that tomcat had bitten my neck too hard to hold me in place underneath him. It was painful but... I was so hot. Thankfully, Kevin was watching over so I never get to mate and he promised not to ever want kittens ever again. "No mating for us, I guess." He chuckles. "Thank goodness. Just give me a bath when I feel hot again. I prefer baths rather than tomcats." After a while, Kevin said it's time to sleep so I retreated to my house which he calls as Orange. But whenever I'm sure he's fast asleep, I would hop up to his bed and sleep beside him. However, I could not sleep well tonight. My whole body was suddenly covered in intense pain but I could not move nor open my eyes. I just laid on the bed, suffering from extreme, torturous pain. I could only wish for Kevin to wake up but I could not call for him. I suffered in silence for hours. I begged inside my head for the pain to stop and it took so long for the pain to disappear. And when it finally disappeared, I quickly succumb to deep sleep out of exhaustion.
