Chapter 1

1038 Words
'Twas a day like any other day. The leaves were turning the color of a flaming fire, starting the count down until they'd fall to their unavoidable death. That was what was going on inside my mind whilst walking toward the gym with Alexis by my side. I'm one of those annoying people that absolutely love fall and can't shut up about it. The vibrant colors around me always surprise me, each and every year. That's the benefit of living in Michigan, you get to fully experience all the seasons.  Every year, each class go on a 5 day-hike. It is agony, but it is tradition, so whether you like it or not is Irrelevant, you are going to do it, period. I had been fortunate thus far. Last year I got to hike with Alexis, my best friend since kindergarten, and the year before that, I hiked with my other good friend, Mia. I could only hope I'd be so lucky this year as well. At least I had the comfort of knowing we got to walk girl-girl and boy-boy, which made the whole thing so much easier. It's so much better to hike with someone you trust and feel comfortable around.  Alexis and I joined the other students who'd gathered in a half circle around the PE teacher, Mr. Morris. I'd, in my mind, started to go through all the necessities I'd packed the night before when I felt a presence behind me, almost looming over me. Freaking Nathan. Great. Did I really have to deal with his crap now? You see, Nathan and I go way back. Our moms are friends, so that means I had to deal with this asshole my whole life, and he sure made sure to be an asshole for all of the time. It's hard to believe now, but Nathan and I used to be super close, but when we turned 8 years old, he began teasing and annoying the hell out of me. And it hasn't stoped. For example, in 3rd grade he pushed me off a swing, sending me to the school nurse with a bleeding knee. Another time, in 7th grade, he decided it'd be an awesome idea to tell the whole school I had herpes through taping up notes everywhere. That's Nathan for you. The thing is, i've never done anything to the guy to get him to hate me so much. It's always astounded me how much hatred he has toward me for entirely no reason. Well, I might've done some revenge on him, but he deserved it, goddamn it!  I knew before he was about to tug at my hair what he was going to do, so I managed to take a step forward, avoiding his gross hand. This was not the first time he'd done this. What I didn't expect was the foot set  before me, making me stumble and falling to the ground. As I land in the wet, muddy dirt, all I can think of is how much I truly hate his guts. One goddamn moment of peace is all I ask for!  I hear the people around me giggle, but I'm used to it at this point, so it doesn't bother me that much anymore. It used to, but when I realized how immature and mean it is, I lost a lot of respect for them, and therefore simply didn't care about their opinions anymore. The important thing is that I have my friends that understand how childish and what a jerk Nathan is.  I turn around to meet his smug, harsh face. I guess this was the last drop, because I could no longer stop myself from completely lashing out on him. I know, I know, it's immature, but sometimes you've got to stand up for yourself. The teachers weren't doing it since he was the golden boy bringing home all the football wins, so that left the responsibility to me.  I think he wasn't prepared for my attack, because when I gave him a forceful shove, it actually made him stumble backwards, and that's not an easy thing to do with a person as big as he is. His face changed from amused to utter determination. Yeah, you little bastard, bring it on. He walked toward me, stopping mere inches away from me. The crowd went completely silent, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I felt his breath wash over me. "Eww, don't you brush your teeth?," I exclaimed, hoping to make him a bit more insecure. All it seemed to do was make him more determined to destroy me judging by the smirk looming on the right side of his lips.  "errhm, kids!," Mr. Morris yelled, finally catching the students attention. I took that as an excuse to break eye contact with Nathan, although I could still feel his piercing gaze in the back of my head. "I think you all know how this works by now, but just to be sure, I'll go through the 5 day-hike assignment one more time." As our poor PE teacher went through the different routes and all the rules of this disgraceful little promenade, I felt Nathans hot breath against my ear. "Don't worry, babe, I'll get my turn when we're all alone," he whispered chuckling, sending shudders all throughout my body. What? What did he mean 'when we're alone'? What had he done?!  "Okay, now! This year you'll be paired up a little differently," Mr. Morris continued. Uh oh. This could not be happening. "This year you'll be paired up boy-girl!" No, this is not right! I could admit that Nathan had a lot of power over others because of his sparkling football skills, but this? This was too much. As Mr. Morris started to shout out the names of who was hiking with who, I felt my heart hammering away in my chest. Alexis took my hand, giving it a comforting squeeze to let me know that she also understood that Nathan'd had this set up. Alexis had, after all, witnessed Nathan harassing me all too many times to know when he was in the working.  "Natalie and Nathan!" Mr. Morris yelled, and my suspicions became reality.
