Off To A New Life

Miley's P.O.V "Dad!", "Dad!". I shout from downstairs. Gosh, he takes so much time to get ready. He's gonna make me late. Like usual. "Daaaaaadddd". Urgh! "Breakfast is ready. We got to leave in 15 minutes", I remind him. So you might be wondering what's gonna happen after 15 minutes? Well, my life is about to change. Yay! I am FINALLY going to University. Away from the stupid high school. Away from this town. By the time we wait for Dad, I think I should introduce myself. Hi, I'm Miley. Miley Paige. I'm almost 18 years old. And by almost I mean my birthday is just 2 months away. I live in Port Macquarie. A small town in between New South Wales and Queensland. My dad's an architect and I always wanted to be an architect like him one day. Thankfully my application got accepted in University of Sydney for undergraduate program in Architecture and I just can't wait to start my new life. My mum passed away when I was 8. Dad says she went for work to Darwin and was met with a horrible accident. The whole car got burnt along with my mum's remains. I always feel that Dad is hiding some part of this story. But I never got a chance to ask him more on this topic. Anyhow, there's not a single day when I don't remember her. She is always with me. She gave me a locket when I was 6. It is shaped like a Hexagon and has an emblem of a full moon on it. Inside is a picture of me with her and dad, with dad holding my hand. I remember the day when we had this photo taken. Okay, kind of starting to miss mum again on my big day. "Dad". "I'm here. I'm here". He runs down the stairs. "Let's go". He start picking up the car keys and his wallet. "Whoa! Have breakfast first, old man. We will leave in 4 minutes". I say while bringing the omelette I made for him. *Sigh* I will miss him alot. "Will you miss me there, honey?", he asks while cutting his omelette. Did he read my mind? "I was thinking the same thing right now dad. I love you. And I will miss you". I hug him. "Promise me you will call me everyday", he says. "A big no. Dad, we have discussed this before that I will call every week, not everyday". He forgets every time. I look at my watch, and "Oh no, no, no. We should be in the car in 2 minutes. Lets go dad. Everything is already loaded", I say while I zip my jacket and turn the door knob. Dad gets in the driver seat and starts the engine. We reach the airport in exactly 7 minutes. Port Macquarie is a small suburban town in NSW, with a small airport having just one runway. I hurriedly jump out of the car and grab a trolley from the bay. Dad comes to help me load my stuff in the trolley. He looks sad and somehow worried. We run to the check-in counter and I handover my online ticket. The lady on the counter confirms my details and hands me a boarding pass. The flight will be boarding in 20 minutes. I go back to dad and take a seat beside him. For a few moments we both are just silent. He looks so sad. It hurts. "Dad, I'm gonna be fine. Don't worry. I'm not a little girl anymore", I say as I take his hand. "I know hun. It's just that after your mum passed away, I did nothing but to raise you and take care of you. And now you are going so far away and I won't get to see you for months", he says. "To be honest dad, I should be the one worried about you. You don't even throw the used toothpaste tubes. They would be left for months there, if I did not throw them", I teased him. He gave me a hard stare. And then we both started laughing. *Female Announcer: All passengers travelling to Sydney from flight SYD09 are requested to board.* Well that's my cue. We both stood up and hugged each other. "I love you dad. You are the best dad in the world", I say smiling at him. He beamed at me and said, "I love you to Mils. Stay safe. Promise me to call every week. And remember your mum loved you very much, and she is always there with you". This bought tears to my eyes. I picked up my boarding pass and headed towards gate 2. Just before entering I looked back to see my dad. He was standing there looking at me and waving at me. I waved back. You stay safe too, dad. I turned and headed towards the plane. Sydney, here I come.
