Come on, come on. I let out a small sigh of relief, watching it finally changing to 6. Finally. He moved behind me, triggering me instinctively close my eyes and pretend to sleep. He kissed my cheek then got out of bed. I waited until I heard the bathroom door close before opening my eyes and wiping off my cheek. I buried myself under the covers with a breathy sigh. I have at least an half hour before I’ll be finally be alone. I can’t even use my phone to pass the time. I sighed, hugging my knees to my chest. I closed my eyes and thought of my happy place.  I smiling, envisioning myself laying on the sand in Bora Bora or anywhere tropical, sipping a cocktail. And before I knew it, I was asleep.  I jumped out of my sleep, my heart racing when the door slammed. I waited a while before peaking beneath the covers. I scanned the room and smelled the air. The smell of his cologne made my stomach turn but it’s a good sign. I crawled out of bed and quietly looked around the apartment. I sucked in a massive breath of relief when I saw no sign of him. Thank God. I hissed in pain when moved my shoulder a certain way. I paused for a moment then rushed to the bathroom mirror. I gasped in horror when I saw my bruises. f**k. My left shoulder and wrist were black and blue, and I looked like I haven’t slept in days. He had one of his drunken episodes last night and I, of course, was the focal point of his anger and ultimately his stress reliever for his delusions. I tried my best not to cry but I couldn’t whole it in. I wanted to punch my reflection, hating what I was seeing.  I wiped my face and looked at myself in the mirror. Ok, Bre. You’re going to get in the shower and try to get in a good mood then cover these bruises. Now smile. I took deep breath and tried to smile. I looked f*****g scary but it’s the best I could do. I searched for my phone and found it in his nightstand. I was hesitant to take it, knowing how he gets when I have it or when he sees me using it.  I closed my eyes and grabbed it. My heart was literally about to pound out of my chest. I opened YouTube and played my playlist on shuffle. I smiled when Empire State of Mind played. I walked into the living room and stopped at the window with the best view of the skyscrapers in the distance. I came to New York to become a writer and here I am in this hellhole with an abusive boyfriend and I have done nothing to push myself forward. This is not the dream I envisioned for myself. I wiped away the tear that escaped and went to the bathroom.  - After a good mini rave in the shower, I manage to get into a decent mood so I won’t look so dead inside. I’m stood at a pedestrian crossing on 8th street, behind a fit as f**k female jogger. I stared at her. She smells amazing. She’s toned with skin the color of dark chocolate, her huge kinky Afro dyed honey blonde. Her hair color and the sun gave her skin such a magnificent glow. Her attire is a yellow shirt, black leggings, and black Nike’s. I noticed she had a coffee cup in her hand. I narrowed my eyes at her.  Why do I feel like I’m forgetting something? I looked down at my hands, my left held the straps of my Red, Lady Dior bag and my right was empty. I stared blankly at them. What am I forgetting? I narrowed my eyes at my palms, then at the back of my hands. I looked at my pastel rainbow, stiletto nails that my boss calls my rainbow talons. I glanced back at the woman as she took a sip. Then it clicked. s**t! I forgot to pick up his coffee. Starbucks is ten blocks back in the direction I came from. Groaning, I quickly turned on my heel. - I got to Starbucks twenty minutes later and I wasn’t surprised at how packed it was. I joined the line of at least fifteen people with a groan. Damn it, this is literally the eleventh time this month I’ve been late, but this is nothing—last month, August, I was early for only five days. Yup, just five. I’m lucky, Mr. Pereira likes me enough to like of me as his daughter because I’m sure if it were anyone else—I’d be fired a long time ago. Then again a man can only take so much before he cracks right? Maybe today is the day he throws my ass out and dust off his hands like I’m nothing but a used tissue. I looked down to check my watch only to realize I’m not wearing it. And whoop di f*****g do I forgot my phone too. s**t. I gritted my teeth. Great. I took a deep breath, letting the intoxicating smells of freshly brewed coffee, baked goodies, and the cologne of the man in front of me wash over me. He smells so freaking intoxicating. I took a step closer to get a nice long whiff. I was in heaven alone with this aroma. Lol. Creepy much, Aubrey? It wasn’t a very strong cologne, but it could definitely knock your socks off. Well, my socks anyway. I yelped when he stepped back, letting his elbow collided with my nose and his foot to crushed my toes. Tears burned my eyes. I whimpered. He briefly glanced over his shoulder, then turned his attention back to his conversation on his phone. You ass! That f*****g hurts! I tapped on his shoulder, pissed. I jumped when his index finger abruptly appeared in front of my face. “Really, and you put up with that bullshit?" He asked, his tone was dry, not hiding his discontentment. His voice....oh holy crap his voice... I could listen to it for hours. It’s so masculine, not too deep, and sultry. I still hate him though, he didn’t even say sorry. “If I were you...I'd fire her on the spot." He said. “It is what it is—because it’s unacceptable.” Sucking in my pride, I tapped his shoulder once again. This time harder. “Hey you," I called, attitude laced into my tone like chocolate syrup on a sundae. Mmm sundae... now I'm hungry. My stomach roared like a thunderstorm. I continued tapping his shoulder. Would you believe this jerk was flat out ignoring me? Urg! Stop ignoring me! “Hold on, some midget is trying to get my attention." He said. I gasped. How dare you! Five feet two is not a midget! Oh! You're so gonna get it! He turned and looked at me. I paused. First, let me tell you....those eyes. Just gorgeous. They’re blue-green mostly green—teal—yeah teal. His teal eyes were coddled by those dark, thick, long, eyelashes. Those teal eyes tore a crater in my soul. His squared jawline was incredibly sharp and was marred by stubbles of dark, neatly shaven facial hair. His perfectly sculpted cheekbones casted a shadow over his hollowed cheeks. His nose is bone straight had a tiny cut across the bridge. It looked fresh. His small, full, pink heart-shaped lips were slightly parted. The lights reflected against his gelled back silky, dark hair with one wavy strand loose over his forehead. He had to be over 6 feet—way past it actually. His skin has this smooth bronzy appearance. Maybe,  he has some Hispanic or Latino in him. Whatever he is....damn.  God, please. Pease don't let me embarrass myself in front of this man on this good Monday morning. “Can I help you with something?" He questioned. His eyes ripping through me. I swallowed a lump the size of North America. “Well?" he added, hinting his irritation. The crease between his thick, dark, neatly shaped brows growing increasingly deep by the second. I blinked my way into recovery. Say something. Time to give him a piece of my mind. I nodded. “Umm... y-y-yes," I fumbled to find my words, “the time. I'd like to know the time." I replied. What the f**k? The time! That’s not what you were supposed to say! You suppose to let the profanity soar higher that a f*****g kite. I licked my dried lips, his eyes following the movement. He turned giving me his full attention. “Please?" He said, softly.  "Please," I repeated. He checked his watch briefly before he turned his attention back to me. His eyes took me in again as I sank into those beautiful depths.  "9:54." He stated. I bit my lip, nervously. Oh, Lord. “Is that a problem?" he asked. I nodded, slowly.   "I'm extremely late for work.” I almost said in a whisper. “Again." I whispered. I'm going to be fired for sure. Well, you had a good run Bre.   "Oh," he said, under his breath. He checked his watch again. ”Damn, I'm also late." He looked over his shoulder. I took the time to look at his butt. Nice. It was poking out of the dark trousers of his black Armani suit. I almost couldn’t tear my eyes away. I gasped when he grabbed my arm. What’s going on? He squeezed a way for us to the front of the line, which puzzled me. I’ve never been apart of such a crime before, and it’s not a good feeling. I looked over my shoulder, meeting the angry gazes of the people behind us, who were tearing us a new one.  “What do you think you’re doing!” A woman hissed. “I’ve been here for almost a half-hour for this bullshit?” A man yelled. I looked up at Teal eyes who‘s level of being unbothered was astronomical. “Um, Teal...” I started, just realizing I didn’t know his name. Before I could continue he had already let go of my hand and walked to the counter. He stood to the right of a man, who was about to order. One nudge of the hip sent the man flying. What the hell is wrong with you!? At least let the man get what he needs! “Hey!" The man yelled, as he flew across the corner. Dude, how hard did you bump him! The man was about to argue, I give him an apologetic smile stopping him. "I’m really sorry.... he hasn't taken his meds this morning." I mouthed. I honestly felt like my statement were true because there’s something very wrong with Teal eyes. Self-entitled more like. He rolled his eyes, as he stormed out through the exit, grumbling to himself. "Umm...sir you can't—"  "I'll have an iced Americano," he said, cutting off the cashier as he loosened his crimson tie. He looked over his shoulder at me, “what do you want?" I froze. I know I should just walk away and go back to the back of the line, but I need to get to work as soon as possible. “Err.... a-a Cappuccino and a Mango, Dragonfruit, Lemonade refresher,"  I responded. Ah... I’m such a terrible person...for letting this gorgeous man influence me—I'm a grown woman for heaven's sake!  He turned his attention back to the cashier, whose name tag read, Parker. “And two cinnamon rolls." He ordered. Parker stared blankly at him. “Like now.” Teal eyes commanded loosening his tie again. I stared at Teal eyes, strong profile, dumbfounded. Am I really going to let this man diminish my moral integrity? Who is this woman I’ve become?  "Sir, please go to the back of the line and wait like everyone else," Parker said, as he chewed his bubble gum. Everyone behind me clapped and cheered. “Thank you!” A man yelled.  Aubrey, you're better this. This isn't who you are. “Come on, it's not a big deal. I can wait." I said, placing my hand on his shoulder. Teal eyes didn't acknowledge me, he was too busy shooting daggers at Parker. Dude, relax it isn’t that serious. My body shivers when he placed his big, soft, warm hand over mine. I felt this... weird feeling I’ve never felt before. I stared at his fingers. They are long and kind of thick and his nails looked freshly manicured. Slowly, he took my hand off his shoulder and held it at his side. Heat rose to my cheek, and a chill ran down my spine. Damn, you’re brazen!   Reality hit me hard. No. No—this can’t happen. I gingerly tried to break free of his grip, hoping he wouldn’t notice but I failed. My shoulders hunched over and my chest was beginning to feel tight. It felt like someone had just shoved me into a tiny room with no windows. I touched my bruised shoulder from last night with a trembling hand. I looked over my shoulder nervously. My heart hammering in my chest. I let out a rigid breath when I realized my boyfriend, Brandon, nor any of his friends were around. Thank God. I flinched when Teal eyes’ thumb stroked my hand. I looked up at him and found him looking down at me, concerned. ”Are you ok?” He asked. I let out another ridge breath, nodding. “Yes,” I answered weakly. “I’ll get us out of here soon, don’t worry.” He said, pressing a kiss on my hand. Did he sense my fear? I stared at him. He gave me a small smile before turning his attention back to Parker, his face contorted and mouth in a snarl. Slowing and intimidatingly, Teal eyes slowly leaned over the counter, his eyes never leaving Parker's, like a lion stalking his next meal. Why did he suddenly get so increasingly attractive? Why do I like men that take charge? I mean, given the nature of my relationship with Brandon—how do I still like men like this? "I suggest you see our orders are done in the next five minutes... before I jump over this damn counter." Teal eyes said, in a deep and authoritative tone. Oh, fuck...am I seriously aroused right now? Parker swallowed hard and nodded to his brunette coworker to make our orders. In a few minutes, she handed them to Parker. Teal eyes let go of my hand to take the orders from a shaken to the core Parker. Teal eyes handed Parker a crisp $100 bill. “Thank you... keep the change. Have a great day." He said, topping his statement off with a panty-dropping smile. There was a hint of a tiny dimple on his right cheek. It wasn't very deep if you weren't looking hard enough, you'd probably miss it. "Thank you....y-you too, sir." Parker stuttered. Teal eyes walked away, probably expecting me to follow him. I gave Parker a sympathetic smile before running after Teal eyes. He stood at the door, leaning against the opened door, waiting for me. He was watching me like a hawk. Heat rose to my cheeks. I walked toward him, we stared into each other’s eyes as I took my cups. The look he gave me was one out of sheer curiosity. I bite my lip which made his gaze intensified. His eyes roamed my face. I tore my eyes from him and walked outside. I stood in front of the entrance, trying to calm my racing heart. All this over a stranger, seriously, Aubrey? Calm the hell down already! "Come on, my car is this way." He said, walking in front of me. He looked at me, nodding towards a shiny, white GT500 Mustang parked on the curb. I stood there watching him push through the sea of New Yorkers. I walked towards him but stopped dead in my tracks when reality hit me. I watched as he pulled his keys out of his pocket, then unlocked his car. ”You coming or what?" He asked, looking at me. I shook my head with a forced smile.  This isn’t a fairy tale, Bre, he’s not a knight in shining armor that was miraculously dropped into your life just to rescue you from Brandon. “Thanks, but no thanks.” I told him. “My workplace isn't far from here plus you're already late and I don’t want to put you out of your way." He frowned. “It’s ok...you won’t be.” He stated. “I have nothing to do besides sit at my desk—besides I own where I work.” I shook my head again. How are you this kind? I squeezed my eyes closed. Sorry, Teal eyes, but I’m not someone you should get mixed up with...so if you know what’s good for you, you'd just leave. I don't want you to get hurt because of me. Brandon will.....I-I can't take another accident. "No, but thank you for the offer.....and coffee," I forced out the last part as quick as I could. If I’m being completely honest with myself, I didn’t want him to leave. Oh my gosh... I sound ridiculous for wanting a stranger to take me away. He bent down to put his orders onto the passenger seat, shuts the door and walked towards me slowly after he locks his car. My heart hammered in my chest echoing every step he took. He stood in front of me, but I didn’t meet his eyes. I kept my head low. I jumped when he took my chin between his thumb and pressed a kiss my left cheek. I shivered. He stayed there for a while. I could feel his warm breath on my neck. I looked at me and found him staring back at me. His eyes are so freaking mesmerizing, the green of his eyes the stretch out into a dark blue web. His lips brush mine making me shiver.  A smirk slowly crept onto his lips, I almost smiled. For a moment I actually wanted him to kiss me. I wanted—no needed to feel like I wasn’t me.....that I wasn’t Brandon’s punching bag. The look this man gave me was like he wanted to devour me.....but I can’t let him. I shouldn’t. He began to lean in. Thoughts of Brandon burst through my head. Please no. I shivered. I got flashbacks to the time a guy at the club tried to dance with me, Brandon beat him to a bloody pulp and I got the worst of it when we got home.  “I-I need to go!" I blurted out, pulling away. He sighed. He gave my forehead a quick peck, then he said, “Take care of yourself." He pulled away then walked to his car. He hopped into his car and drove off. Parts so many parts of me wanted me to scream: ‘WAIT!’ OR ‘STOP!’ The rest of me wanted him to turn around and convince me to go with him.  Bre stop...you’re late for work. Work? Oh s**t!
