Chapter 1

WHEN LUNA STEPPED OUT of the car, looking up at the gigantic mansion that was her home, she felt the intense urge to run. The driver stood next to her, awkwardly, his hand outstretched towards the door she had just stepped out of. He was clearly caught off guard by her and she had seen this expression on him at least five times in the past two hours. When she had arrived at the airport and a tall man clad in black came to pick her up, the reality of it all finally hit her. She was back in the town she had left so many years ago and the fact that she was about to meet the family she had tried so hard to avoid was something she dreaded. The only one she was actually looking forward to seeing was David, but that was the only good point in this rollercoaster ride that had been her life in the past month. When Luna had gotten expelled from Lincoln High, she hadn't been that surprised. It had been coming for a long time really and everything she had done, leading to that point, was pretty much enough to warrant several expulsions actually. It had been when she was called by her father that had filled her with surprise. The man never really was that fond of contacting his long lost daughter, except to tell her how ashamed he was of her. So when he had told her, his voice as cool as always, that she was to return at once, she almost laughed. Him ordering her around was no surprise. Her obeying had been. It wasn't like he had given her that much of a choice. She didn't have another school to return to and all her stuff was already sent back by the time she arrived back in her apartment. But although she normally would have defied him, her spirit had been low lately and this had made it die out. Why fight for something when there's nothing left to fight for? A bitter laugh almost left her lips when she thought of her father. He had always lived by the motto that whatever he wanted, he got and she absolutely despised him for it. She despised him for so many things, but she hadn't seen her brother in so long and maybe, a change of pace would be nice for her. 'Miss?' the driver began hesitantly, his eyes assessing her face. She blinked, interrupted out of her thoughts. 'Yeah,' she said, plastering a smile on her face,' I get it. I'm going in.' Before he could help her with the small amount of baggage she had left to carry, she had already taken it out of the trunk. His eyes widened and he opened his mouth to protest, but she waved it off. 'There's no need, Lucas,' she said, her voice softening,' I'm capable of carrying my own things, but thank you. Don't worry, I won't let daddy dearest know I carried them myself.' The concern in his eyes faded a bit, but the tension in his shoulders didn't ease as he watched her walk away. People had always been scared of her family, of the influence and power they carried. Money could buy almost anything in this world and the Greene's had more than enough of it. She had hated the world her family lived in, the fake friendships and the empty words. And for that, her father had hated her. She tried to hide her scowl when she arrived at the door, her finger pressed on the door bell. Don't let them see weakness, Luna, she told herself while she breathed in. Weakness was one thing you weren't tolerated to have as a Greene. Heaven knows she had enough that wasn't tolerated already. So when her sister opened the door, her eyes as icy as her father's, the smile on her face didn't budge. 'Luna,' she said, her lips pressed into a tight line. Her sister had always looked quite like her. From her tall, slim posture to her high cheekbones, it was almost like looking into a mirror. The only clear differences were her eyes, which Luna had gotten from her mother. Zara had grown quite a bit. The last time Luna remembered seeing her was on pictures David had sent her, but she hadn't been able to discern her sister's face that well in the bright light that had filled each picture. Greene Manor had always had the floor to ceiling windows, which made the place bright and sunny. It hadn't fitted the atmosphere inside at all and even now Luna felt the chill, although the sun was warming her face. 'How long has it been,' Luna said breezily, passing her sister to enter the house,' four years?' 'Five.' 'You've become even prettier,' Luna said, the smile on her face obviously fake as she tried to lighten the mood. When Zara's eyes softened a little, Luna knew she had said the right thing. 'I've been told I look more and more like dad each day,' she said proudly, the frown on her forehead fading. She did. Zara's sleek, raven hair and pale blue eyes were making her think of her father so much, Luna almost shuddered. The thought that that meant she was becoming more and more like him lookswise too, almost dissolved the smile she had plastered on her face. 'I hear you've been kicked out of that trash school you were at,' Zara said, scrunching her nose as she looked at her with distaste,' wasn't that a school filled with delinquents? How did you get kicked out of that one?' Luna shrugged, giving any attempt at a civil conversation up. She didn't know why Zara disliked her so much, but it probably had to do with her father's opinion of her. Whatever he said was law and Luna was just a barely containable criminal to him. It broke her heart that that had made her own sister dislike her too. 'It happens,' she said smoothly, avoiding the topic. 'How many schools has it been now?' Zara scoffed,' four? Five? I don't even know why they still accept you.' But they both did know. What else would it be, other than the Greene name? Any school would want a Greene, for the power of the name alone. That's why it had taken quite a lot of time for her to get kicked out of the schools she had attended, but her attitude and looks had been so unlike any other Greene that the schools mostly pretended she wasn't one at the end. It wasn't like she would threaten them with the name. Power that was her parents' wasn't hers and she knew better than to use it. 'Three actually,' she laughed humorlessly,' but glad to see you're so invested in my education, sis. I'll be attending your school now, right?' Luna leaned in, her eyes a sharp green as she coolly held her sister's gaze. Zara's cheeks had become an unflattering red shade by now and she knew the girl was barely able to contain her anger. 'I'm looking so forward to spending more time with you!' Luna exclamated overexcitedly, her eyes containing no trace of the excitement in her voice,' let's get to know each other even better now, shall we?' Before her sister could hit her or scream about Luna embarassing her at school, because Luna knew for sure she would be viewed as embarassing no matter what she did, the distance between them had increased. Luna was already halfway to her old room before her entrance in her childhood house could end in her flooring her little sister. She was two hours in town and she had already almost gotten into a fight. As she arrived in front of her old room, she grimaced. She was in for a lot of trouble.
