Chapter 1

Knock. Knock. My bedroom door opens and my dad walks in. "Hannah, Lexi is here." I'm sitting at my vanity, putting on my favorite necklace. It has a green emerald in the middle of a silver heart. My mom gave to me when I was a little girl. Green has been my favorite color ever since. "Ok, thanks Dad. I'll be down in a second." "You girls be careful today," he says as he sits on the corner of my bed. "Are you going to be long? Maybe Mason should go with you. Rogues have been spotted in the area outside our land." We're werewolves. My dad is Alpha Jackson to the Silver Mist pack in the mountains of Colorado. My twin brother, Mason, will be taking over the pack on our 18th birthday next year. "We're just going into town to get some new clothes for school. Mason does not want to go shopping with a couple of girls. We'll be ok, I promise." "Well, just make sure your back before dinner. I'm having Elianna make something special." "I will." I stand up, give him a kiss on the cheek and then turn to the mirror. After checking myself and smoothing my dress, I said goodbye to my dad and make my way downstairs. I see Lexi and run over and give her a hug. "Hey," She says. Lexi has been my best friend since we were babies. She's slightly shorter than me with light brown hair, brown eyes and a gorgeous body. . As werewolves, we have naturally toned and fit bodies. I've always been on the slimmer side but Lexi definitely has some beautiful curves that I'm totally jealous of. "Are you ready?" I ask. "Totally. I've been dying to get some new jeans and dresses." "Awesome, let's take my Jeep then." We headed out the door and got in my car. Driving down the mountain, we're listening to music and laughing like we always do. Lexi would be my beta if I was ever going to be an Alpha. Her dad is the current beta for my pack. That's how we grew up so close. "So where are we going first," She asks. "I was thinking we could grab lunch first and then hit up the new store in the mall and take it from there. What do you think?" "Sounds good. Could we eat at the food court if we're going to the mall anyway? I need some eye candy." That's Lex for you. Seriously boy crazy. Neither of us have found our mates yet and she has made it her life's mission. Wolves can feel the mate bond as early as sixteen. I'm not in a hurry, though. Since I'm not taking over as Alpha, I plan on just focusing on my studies and then going off to college. I roll my eyes. "Fine, but we get to stop by the bookstore too." "Ugh. Why do you do this to me?" "The same reason you make me indulge your hunt for a mate." "Ok, fair, but when you find your mate, Hannah, you'll understand." I didn't respond but I smiled and kept driving. Lexi was like a sister to me and I have to admit, she got a twinkle in her eye when she talked about mates. It was cute and I wanted the best mate possible for her. I just didn't share her choice for a future. She knew that and she did try to accept it. She wanted me happy, too. They day went on as expected. We had dozens of bags from various stores. Lexi didn't find a mate, but I got a couple new books. We got back to my house and Lexi went home. I still had plenty of time before dinner so I took my stuff to my room and changed into a pair of shorts and a sports bra. It was a nice evening for a run and with school tomorrow, I needed to let loose. I headed out to the backyard and made my way into the trees. I took off at a jog and started to pick up pace. It helped some but I needed more. So as I was running, I shifted. It happened almost instantly. Wolves first shift at sixteen and it gets easier and faster the more you do it. I kept running until I reached the lake. By then, I was almost out of breath and was feeling alot better, alot more relaxed. The Lake was about 5 miles from my house. And next to it, sat this huge boulder. I lept up on to it and laid down. This is my favorite spot in the whole world. It's where I come to think. It is always so quiet and peaceful. I lost track of time, laying there, overlooking the lake. I didn't realize the sun had started setting until the light was almost completely gone. I jumped off my rock, took a few laps of the water and started towards home. My dad might be a little angry with me but mom would understand and help soften the blow. I got home but didn't shift back. I hadn't planned on shifting at all and my clothes were going to be shredded the second I changed back. So I jumped up to the balcony off of my room. Then I shifted and quickly got into my room to change. After putting on clothes that were intact, I went down to dinner. Everyone had already started eating, which is fine. I don't like people to wait for me. Looks like dad had Elianna, our cook, make her famous spaghetti and meatballs. One of my favorite foods. "Nice of you to finally join us, Hannah," said dad. He really didn't look happy. "I'm sorry. I thought I had time to go for a run before dinner. I went to the lake and lost track of time." "That's ok, honey. We understand. You have a big day tomorrow. It's your first day of senior year, after all," said Mom. She put her hand on my dad's and instantly he calmed down. He looked at her and they smiled at each other. He might be the big bad Alpha but she was his Luna and she was his world. "Thanks Mom. Hey, Mason, what'd you do today?" I took a bite of my food and turned to my brother. He's taller than me but we share the same dark brown hair as our parents. Being twins, we do look alike. Our eyes are even the same blue. "Just patrols, mostly. Checking our borders, that kind of thing. Did you have fun with Lexi?" "I did. I got this beautiful outfit for tomorrow. I got some new books too." "That's awesome. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow. I'd rather be here. I don't need to finish school. I need to be training to take over as Alpha." "Mason," my dad started, "we've talked about this. You need your education. It's important. You'll still be training, but one last year of school won't hurt you." They continued to argue for a little while longer until my mom had enough. I swear, it's like she's Alpha sometimes. Then, Elianna brought out tiramisu for dessert. Honestly, she makes the best food. Mom's tried to cook a few times but let's just say, it's a fire hazard. After finishing up, I say goodnight to my family and I head back upstairs to my room. I get ready for bed and brush my long hair into a ponytail. I stare in the mirror for a minute at myself. What will this year be like? It's something I've been struggling with. It's the last year before I'm an adult and ready to go off on my own but it also feels like the beginning of the rest of my life. Like a weird transition and I can't help the pit in my stomach. I'm not sure why it's there. It's just an uneasy feeling about something I should be excited about. I shake the last few nerves I feel and crawl into bed. Tomorrow is going to be great. I'll make sure of it.
