Chapter One

Dejected and frustrated, Suzie Brown walked out of the interview room, her head heavily weighed down by eerie, excruciating portentousness . This particular interview was her last hope in securing herself a job which had become quite elusive judging from the many interviews she had so far attended . Despite her colourful credentials, she had just been denied the opportunity on the grounds of lack of experience . The same response had been replicated in all the interviews she had attended for the last three months since she had left home for the city . Thinking about home, she painfully remembered that she no longer had one as her uncles and cousins had colluded to take her parents' land and house after they had died in a tragic road accident . It was soon after her graduation that they had told her to get married as she was not allowed by tradition to inherit her father's estate . She did not have the means to take them to court and when one of the daughters from the village visited from the city, she had no otherwise than to accompany her, hoping to secure a job with her beautiful college degree . Unfortunately, Sandra, the girl who had plucked her out of the village, turned out to be of questionable character . While she had presented herself as an office lady ,it turned out that she lived on p**********n and drug-peddling .As Suzie's job interviews failed one after another, she started pressuring her to join her business, something she was not prepared to do. Suzie had opted instead to do menial jobs such as washing people's clothes and baby-sitting to at least raise a little money for her sustenance and travel . This precipitated a bitter exchange between them that particular morning that resulted in her being thrown out of the house . Not only had she failed in the interview, but she also had nowhere to go to ,nor any money to buy food . Her stomach rumbled because she had missed breakfast as she walked along the road . So preoccupied was her mind that she did not realize that she was at the middle of a busy highway , as if she was in a stupor . * * * * * About hundred metres away from Suzie's interview location, Prince Dan was preparing to have lunch with Princess Diana, his fiancee and two of her friends . As handsome as princes are ought to be, and as the only son of the Northern king, he was the heir apparent to the throne. Unlike many of his calibre , in his twenty-seven years of life, he was known to be a generous and kind- hearted person who never looked down upon anyone . Princess Diana's character was in sharp contrast to his .At twenty-four, she was as beautiful as she was pompous and arrogant . Full of herself ,she never missed a chance to belittle others, especially those of the lower strata . When their orders were served , she took a bite of the curried chicken and felt like it was not to her liking . She summoned the waitress who had served it and threw the whole plate on her face , punctuating the move with expletives . " How does it feel in your eyes ,you miscreant ?" She asked the dumbfounded waitress who was busy squeezing her eyes from the stinging chilli . " Where did you learn your damn cooking ?" " Was that necessary ?" Interposed Prince Dan ." I mean, if you are dissatisfied by the food , wouldn't it have been better just to say so instead of causing this unnecessary drama ? Why subject this poor girl to this kind of mistreatment ?" " This so-called poor girl needs to be taught some lesson , darling . I know her kind , this is the only language she understands better ," she said , unmoved by what she had just done . While the poor girl ran to the water tap to wash her face , the manager came along and offered his apologies . Diana could have none of it as she continued arguing vehemently . Her two friends tried to prevail on her to take it easy to no avail . " I'm sorry I have lost my appetite ," Prince Dan said , standing up . " I think this will take care of the bill . See you some other time ." " You are not planning on walking out on us ?" Diana asked . " I can't imagine that you are defending this poor service !" " No, it is not exactly walking out, but since I have lost my appetite , there are more urgent matters that I could attend to . Or , would you rather I stayed watching this bizzare incidents of yours ?" " You call correcting an anomaly in my food bizzare ?" " What I'm seeing is some unwarranted demeaning of another person , which is far from correcting . Anyway, have a nice day ." He strolled towards his car and drove onto the highway , leaving them staring disbelievingly . He recalled that he had been opposed to her relationship from the beginning , but his parents, especially the queen , could have none of it . She had seen her strong friendship with the queen of the South as the more reason as to why their children should join in the royal matrimony . Despite their engagement that had been attended to with a lot of pomp, her arrogance and indifference to simple courtesy was getting to his nerves . Moreover, her overbearing character was almost suffocating such that he was starting to rethink his decision . He was seething with anger as he drove along the highway that he almost missed seeing the girl who had jetted into his lane barely ten metres away . He suddenly stepped on the brakes causing the vehicle to skid forward ,tyres protesting . Nevertheless ,the car's bumper made some contact with the girl and she fell down on the road . Fearing that he had hit and killed her , he got out of the car and approached her . He found her breathing , but unconscious . With the assistance of some bystanders , he carried her into his car and speed off into a hospital . He was told to wait outside as she was taken into the emergency room . He waited anxiously for the doctor's report , praying that she revived . A few minutes later, the doctor came out . " The patient suffered a minor injury on the hip muscles ," the doctor started . " Nothing that can't be relieved by simple pain-relievers . However , she is dehydrated and we have put her on a drip ." " Thanks , doctor ! You can't understand how relieved I am . Is it possible for me to see her now?" " No , although she is regaining some consciousness , she is still sedated . She is likely to be fully recovered by tomorrow morning . Would you be having contacts of any relatives we might contact ?" " Not at all . I don't even know her , but she had some bag . May be we might find some contacts in her phone, or something ." Unfortunately , her phone was in shambles as it was the one which had experienced the direct impact from the vehicle's bumper . Her academic papers had no contacts of any relatives . " Look here , doctor . If you say that she will be up by tomorrow morning , go ahead and do the needful . I will foot her bill and everything related to her treatment . I will be here early in the morning to check on her ." " That will be kind of you , Sir. We will do our best ." As he walked towards his car , he could not help wondering about what might have made the girl to walk in the middle of the busy highway . He had seen from her academic transcripts that she was one of no mean qualifications , but why the attempted suicide ? He could not wait to find out from her the following morning .
