The Harsh Beginning

1097 Words
As an Empath Raven noticed a lot of things. She noticed the change in people as they grew,  as they envolved. Like how Starfire and Robin changed the first week they got together, their overly happy bodies aura's were buzzing with excitement, lust, and love.  And sure it dulled after a while, but it was there.  She could see the difference in everyone. No matter who or what they were.  For the last five years in knowing her team, her family, only one person had been consistent.  Beast Boy. Garfield Logan, the one person that had been innocent on the team, nice, and the only person brave enough to be determined to make her laugh. His kind thoughts about her, his sweet smile lighting up the moment he saw her, the adorable green cat he turned into to make her smile..it all melted her.  On the inside.  While Raven secretly loved it, him trying so hard to make her smile, to make her happy, she knew nothing would come of it. Just heartache for him.  So she was a b***h to ruin it.  To ruin his sweetness to her so hopefully, he'd stop.  But like a stray cat Beast Boy kept coming back even when he was kicked away.  It all came to a head though on the eve of Raven's birthday. He had known that even with her father gone, her birthday no longer means the same horrible thing as before, she still hadn't wanted to celebrate. And after a stern lecture from Robin, he relented on trying to get her to go out or let the titans throw her a party.  But, it was his secret pleasure to go into town and look at something for her. Nothing too big, nothing too fancy.  When he went into the mall he passed a cool vintage store, with a dark and somber aura to it.  Beast Boy shopped around before finding something he knew Raven would love. Something that fit her to the letter and eagerly bought it and took it home.  When they went out on a mission he put the box in front of her door and left to help them fight Plasmus. It was hours later, covered in Plasmus' disgusting purple ooze gunk on their shoes, everyone wanted a shower and their bed.  Raven went to her door and found the silver wrapped gift box and a large black bow on the top. Sighing, Raven lifted it with her powers and levitated into her room.  As she lowered her hood, Raven slowly opened the box and gasped in surprise. Picking up the card slowly, Raven fingered her gift before reading the familiar and still surprisingly beautiful scrawl of Beast Boy.  'Dear Raven, I know you didn't want to celebrate and I get it. But I couldn't let this day pass without reminding you how special you are to all of us. Love-B."  The necklace in the box was on a long silvery black chain, the beautiful obsidian Raven with its ruby-red eyes and black shiny body sat proudly in the box. And Raven had, of course, loved it, the giddy emotions flittering through her body making her want to squeal like a little girl.  But the books on her shelves started to fly the moment she started to feel even a smidge of happiness.  So she turned it into anger. The only emotion she could feel without things happening she didn't want. The common reaction to getting something you love was to say thank you and move on. But of course Raven had to be difficult.  Charging into the common room, she spotted the changeling and hollered, "How dare you not respect my wishes!" Beast Boy tried to calm her down, but Raven flipped her s**t and went all demon on Beast Boy confusing the hell out of him.  Beast Boy had been embarrassed and hurt, but overall bewildered by Raven's actions. He thought to do something nice for Raven, a small little something in private would still be nice. Something to show he did care for her. But he was thrown around the common room before being skipped rocked out the window and into the lake.  When Beast Boy swam back home, he was on the banks of the tower, his face still scrunched in confusion when Robin stopped him. With a severe look on his face, Robin crossed his arms, "I thought we had this talk Beast Boy! She said she didn't want to do anything or make a fuss of it, so why did you bother her!?" Beast Boy flinched, "I was just being nice! I thought buying her something, a small fifteen dollar something would be better than just letting her sit back and hate today! She's still here! So to me, that's something to celebrate, something to give a present about!"  Robin sighed warily, "Beast Boy I get it okay, you like her. But Raven's made it perfectly clear it's NEVER going to happen. Why put yourself through this?" Beast Boy looked down to the ground, heart aching, feeling as if someone had punched him in the gut, "I'm her friend. Friends get each other things on their birthday, I didn't think she'd-."  Robin cut Beast Boy off with an annoyed, "You never do! You don't think, you just do, despite what I tell you which is a problem Beast Boy!"  Dead serious Robin went in on Beast Boy, "You're not a kid anymore and you need to grow up! Your recklessness in missions, your thoughtless actions with civilians, you harassing Raven knowing it upsets her...it ends now."  Scowling at Beast Boy, Robin made the ultimatum very clear, "Grow up, or leave Titans Tower."  And then boy wonder left a shaken Beast Boy on the banks, his cape blowing behind him leaving a chill over Beast Boy's skin. Robin heard Beast Boy splash into the water and assumed he went swimming to think about what he was told. And maybe if Robin had turned around like his conscious nagged him to, he could have stopped it.  But no, he kept going thinking his tough-love approach would finally get through to him.  But he had no idea what he had done.  Beast Boy at that moment remained human, his green body sinking to the bottom of the lake as a depression he had never felt before settled in his bones. It weighed him down to the darkest part of the abyss, his heart finally hardening like any adults.  It was at the bottom of that lake, Beast Boy finally changed.
