Chapter 1

Looking out of her new bedroom window from her small alcove, Lylah watched as the small sprites danced around through the night, providing some illumination to the darkness of the forest. Such a magical draw they had as they swayed around the tree trunks to a tone only they heard. Not many would see it, but she could. The magic that formed and hummed around them was a breath-taking sight that she had only seen once in her life before moving here. This was one benefit about this new location, there was plenty of magic here and it provided her with an extra dose of magic juice that she had never known she’d been missing.  Unfortunately, she wouldn’t be able to enjoy the energy and the magic in those woods anytime soon.                 Taking her eyes from the window she looked down at the bracelet she held within her hands. Such a simple item. A silver chain with a moon charm, yet it held one of the best enchantments her mother has created to date. This spell would ensure the wearer’s appearance to be as plain as possible to those who looked at them. Instead of seeing her slightly curly dark mahogany hair she would have straight dirty blond hair. Her beautiful sapphire blue eyes would now be a grey dullish green. Even her slightly tanned skin would be as white as possible. Anything and everything that could be changed from her normal self was changed by the enchantment and gave off a bland look that many wouldn’t look twice at, which was the point.                 The other important objective of the bracelet besides concealing everything about her was that I masked her magic from everyone too. The only time she would be able to be free of it, was at home. It was the only place her mother had successfully encased with intricate protective symbols that created a barrier for her magic. That task had been difficult on her mother, but they both needed a place where they would be safe and hidden. A place where they could drop their guards and Lylah her bracelet. She hadn’t let her mother know just how taxing the bracelet was on her. It contained her magic, but she hated how uncomfortable it made her. The bracelet just bottled up her magic causing her to be uneasy and off balance. Now that the barrier was up she would be able to allow her magic enough release.                 “I understand you don’t like it sweetie.” She looked over from her small alcove to see her mother with a soft smile on her face. “It’s for the best though.”                 “I know.” Lylah moved to stand up to place the bracelet on her desk by the small alcove. “Thank you for everything. I know it wasn’t easy having to move because of me.” She couldn’t help but blame herself for the situation they were in and having to make them move from their old home in Pennsylvania all the way to Colorado. That’s when her mother moved quickly to her wrapping her in a giant hug. “Just you stop that. I’m not sorry at all. This house is ten times better than that little one we had back home. I definitely find being here much better. The air and the nature surpass all that city life.” Kissing the top of Lylah’s head, she pulled back to look down at her. “Let’s make the most of it here. With you starting a new school and myself a new job, things could become even better than before.” Moving back from her mom it was hard for Lylah not to smile. If someone ever needed to feel better about a situation it was her mother that could do it. “Now you need to go to bed and so do I.” With a final smile her mother moved to the door flicking the light off. “Goodnight sweetie. I love you.” “I love you too mom.” Lylah moved to her twin bed moving to get under the gray comforter. Tomorrow would be her first day at her new school. This was her senior year of high school and since they had moved in the middle of September, she would be that one kid that was already behind and friendless. There was no way around this outcome of events. This was just how things would have to be for the time being. Closing her eyes, she thought about the letter that was left for her and the body that accompanied it. Such an image was hard for her to erase out of her mind. Eventually she was able to rid of the image and drift off to sleep. However, morning seemed to come too fast as the ringing of the alarm on her phone woke her. For once though, no dreams assaulted her mind. Grabbing her phone from the side table by her bed, she touched the screen ending the annoying noise. Moving out from under the warm nest of a bed, she moved to her little walk in closet to grab some clothes before heading to take a shower. She decided on some skinny jeans with holes in the knees, a plain maroon shirt, and a set of black undergarments that had some lace on the edges. She wasn’t about many cute things, but some things she did like. With all the items in her arms, she moved out of her room to the bathroom down the hall. She didn’t have too long to get ready so took a quick hot shower. She wasn’t one for waking up in the morning easy so always waited for the last minute. Turning on the shower she moved to take off her clothes and threw them in the hamper. She moved to feel the water first and found that it was thankfully perfectly hot. Always made coming out of the shower difficult yet refreshing at the same time. Toweling off quickly she moved to get her clothes on and grabbed the hairdryer from the little wire rack. Plugging it in she turned it on the higher setting trying to get her hair somewhat dry. Once it got slightly dry she placed the hairdryer back on the wire rack, placed the towel on the hook on the back of the door and moved out of the bathroom back to her room. Moving over to her desk she grabbed the silver bracelet to place around her wrist, her phone and her black backpack on the floor. Finally, she grabbed her pull over light grey sweater to put on and headed out of the room. Going down the hall of the she reached the living room to head over to the front door to grab her black flats off the shoe rack. Mom had already left since she had to get to work a little earlier than normal to her new job at the library. Thankfully, they only lived about five blocks from the high school, so she could just walk there. Having one car had its downfall, but it’s not like she was much for wanting to be out anyway. Grabbing the headphones from her back packs front pocket, she plugged them into her phone, so she could listen to her rock mix. She allowed herself to get lost in the music and before she knew it she was in front of the school. There were kids that stood outside talking among each other. Some looked over at her, but lost interest in her just as the spell intended. Ignoring them all she moved towards the front doors to get into the main area. Once inside the entrance of the school she noticed the office to the right and moved towards it. She looked down at her phone and that’s when she ran into a wall of a person. “I’m sorry.”           Moving back, she looked up at the person before her. What she met was a six-foot two guy who has intense gray blue eyes and a messy head of straight dark brown hair, which seemed almost black. He truly was a charming looking guy especially paired with dark jeans, a white tee shirt and a pair black boots on. He was definitely very handsome, and she couldn’t help but get caught up in his eyes. He smiled softly down to her which made her feel weak in the knees which confused her. She wasn’t sure why she had this reaction to him even if he was so attractive it was strange. “That’s okay, it was my fault. I wasn’t paying too much attention to where I was going. You must be the new girl, Lylah, right?” All she could manage was a weak nod. “I’m guessing you were heading to the office. Well, I’ll let you go. I hope you have a good first day of school and sorry again about running into you.” His smile continued until he moved away from her to a group of guys over by the entrance staring at her. Mentally shaking her head, she forced her eyes away from him and moved back towards the office.                 It’s not like he would notice her much otherwise with this bracelet on. Nope, it’s best to just forget about this occurrence regardless about the effect that he had on her. Nothing could or would ever happen. Instead she focused on entering the office and going to the front desk. The lady that sat behind the desk was probably in her early thirties. She wore a soft pink blouse with her blond hair tied up in a pony tail, while her green eyes looked up to her with a smile on her face. “Hello, how may I help you?”                   “I’m Lylah Smith. I’m supposed to be starting school here as of today.” Recognition came to the woman’s face; whose name was Mrs. Richardson according to the name plate on her desk.                 She grabbed a folder from her desk and placed it over the desk for me to have. “In this folder you will find your schedule for the semester along with a map of the school. The number to your locker and combination is also in there on a sticky note for you. The map has an X where your locker will be at.” She opened the folder in front of her to help explain the items as she went. “Now for your first class you will want to go to Room 110. To get there, you will leave this office and go to your right. You will then proceed down the hall until you reach the fifth room to the right.” Mrs. Richardson then closed the folder to hand off to Lylah and proceeded to explain the school’s layout. “All classes that are in the 100s will be on the first floor and 200s are on the second. There are also plaques in most areas to help identify where certain rooms are. You can find the stairs in the corners of the building. If you have any trouble finding your other rooms, please feel free to come back here and I can assist you.” She talked in a slow manner ensuring that she understood what she was saying. It was quite a bit of information at once, but the woman helped ensure she was understanding it. “And don’t worry about being late to any of your classes Miss Smith. The teachers here understand that the first few days might be tricky to navigate and will not write you up for any tardies for the first week or so.”                 Finally, it seemed she was done, and Lylah nodded her head. “Thank you very much Mrs. Richardson. I will let you know if I need any help, though you explained it well, so I should be able to figure it out.”                 “Glad to hear. I hope you have a wonderful first day of school here.” With a soft smile and wave Mrs. Richardson went back to her tasks on the computer while Lylah moved out of the office and went to the right as instructed. She didn’t think classes had started as there were still people loitering around in the halls talking to one another. As if on que the bell rang causing everyone to move in a mob like fashion in different directions. Just what she loved, being pushed around. Giving a sigh she followed as best she could through the halls to get to the class and entered it to find that the boy she had bumped into earlier sitting down in the back-left corner with girls fawning over him to the seats beside him and his friends chatting to him on the other side. Wanting to avoid the feelings she had felt earlier she moved towards the opposite side of the room and to the front. Not like anyone would notice her too much as they got over the initial “she’s a new girl” phase. The magic in the bracelet wouldn’t allow it.
