Lanie and Darry met each other in middle school. They lived next door to each other after Darry's mom passed away and he had to move in with his father. Darry was what you call "a jock" and Lanie was conservative and just a shy girl who kept to herself. They both had math class together and Darry asked her to the school dance. That had been together ever since. Never dating anyone else.       The day started like any other, Lanie woke up at 6 am to fix her morning coffee before having to get dressed for another day at work. Lanie sits at the dining room table with the morning newspaper. After being told he would never be able to have children of her own, she decided that she wanted to work with children so she became an elementary school teacher. The love she had for her students was like no other. Her husband Darry, a businessman and writer seemed withdrawn lately and barely had spoken to her. Lanie spent many of her nights alone, as Darry spent a lot of his nights working late, sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning. Often he would still be sleeping as Lanie left for work. This morning was just a little bit different.     "Darry?"     "Your breakfast is ready," said Lanie. "I am leaving for work, I'll see you this evening for dinner, yeah?" Silence filled the room, as Lanie sighed and grabbed her keys and coat to head out the door. It was a chilly morning, the sun was rising over the trees and you could hear the roosters crowing off in the distance. At the end of the street, you could see and hear the children laughing as they were waiting on the school bus.       Lanie was excited to see her children, she was a kindergarten teacher. She had always dreamed of becoming one. Lanie's mother had been a teacher for most of her life. Because of her mother's love for teaching, Lanie had fallen into the same footsteps and enjoyed it just as much.     The day was about to get started as her children started piling into the room. She had 15 wonderful students. Each had their personalities and were so full of laughter and loved to be there every day. Each of the students loved Lanie. They all loved having her as a teacher and Lanie felt the same about her students. Each day they would learn about Math and English and on Fridays, they would watch a movie that was based on what they learned that week as a treat. It kept the children busy and it also made it fun to be in school. This week was the last week before Christmas break so Lanie was determined to make this week exciting for the children.       After a long day of class, the school was out and it was time to head home for the day. Little did she know, the principal, Mr. Hollows was waiting beyond her door. "Hello Mrs. Darnell," Mr. Hollows said in his super-low voice. "How was class today?" Mr. Hollows was a new principal at the school and was super friendly, and was always checking up on the teachers and students. "Oh, Mr. Hollows, you frightened me, I am doing great today, getting ready to head home," said Lanie. "That's wonderful, I was wondering if I could speak with you in my office for just a moment, it shouldn't take long," exclaimed Mr. Hollows. "Certainly! I will be right there," said Lanie.     As Lanie walked down the hallway, it felt so long and narrow, she was afraid of what he would say. Lanie talked to herself when she was worried. "What have I done wrong?" After a few moments, she reached the principal's office. She knocked on the door. "Come in, Mrs. Darnell, please take a seat," said Mr. Hollows. "Mrs. Darnell, you have been with this school system for a very long time. We appreciate you and love having you here. Our children greatly appreciate everything that you do for them. We have been watching you and I would like to tell you that we are going to give you a raise for all of your valued efforts here at the school," explained Mr. Hollows. "Oh my goodness, I can't thank you enough. My husband and I have been having it rough lately, and this raise will help us in many ways. Not to mention, I will be able to do more for the children in my class. Thank you so much Mr. Hollows! I will see you tomorrow morning," said Lanie.      Lanie had to stop by the grocery store to pick up a few things for dinner tonight. She wanted to make one of Darry's favorites, chicken lasagna. As a teenager, Lanie's mother let Lanie cook dinner for the family, during one of those times, Darry had come over and that's the day that he fell in love with her chicken lasagna. Usually, she only cooked it on special occasions. Tonight was one of those special occasions as Lanie was going to tell Darry of her new raise. This raise was going to help with the bills and would leave some extra money in the budget for Lanie and Darry to do more as a couple.     Darry was a writer, he had been writing all of his life. Within the last month, he finished his college degree and found work as a realtor. Darry's mother was a realtor in her younger days and wasn't home a lot. But, she was able to give Darry a life that only others could dream of. He had just about anything he could have ever asked for. His life came crashing down when he found out that his mother had Leukemia and only had weeks if not just months left to live. He was angry with her, he often blamed himself because he believed that he could have changed things.     Lanie got home from the grocery store, it was 5 pm. If Darry made it home in time, he usually got home around 7 pm. So Lanie started dinner. As she was waiting on the food to get done, she decorated the dining room table with beautiful chinaware and large white candles. Darry was going to be surprised when he came home. He wouldn't know what to think.
