Euclid Elementary School – September 17, 2001 I was six years old and in second grade when I first saw him. He was sitting by himself and there was a cut on his lip. I was only two tables away, but I can see that he wanted to cry, but was holding it in. He suddenly turned his head and looked at me. We just stared at each other for a while, his eyes dark brown, then the tears just started to slide down his cheeks.  He turned his back to me and started wiping his eyes with the back of his hands. Then the bell rang, signing that recess is over. I got up from the table and headed towards my classmates where they were playing dodgeball and were now waiting for our teacher, almost, in a two-line. I looked behind me and saw him walking towards the kickball area, just next to the 4-square area which is right next to our dodgeball area. I noticed some of the kids in his class that is friends with my cousin and, now, know he is a third grader and from far away I can see him better. He was wearing our school uniform, blue pants, and a white shirt. His hair was short but shaggy and he looked chubby and pale. “Lilith?” I turned my head to look at my younger twin sister, Ariel. Ariel is and looks the opposite of me, her skin is a dark shade of brown from being in the sun so much, her hair light brown with streaks of dark brown and her eyes dark brown, close to dark chocolate. My hair is dark brown with streaks of light brown, sometimes looking a bit red-ish, my eyes reddish-brown and my skin is pale from lack of sun, and because I have a fragile body, five or ten minutes, under the sun my nose will start bleeding or I’ll faint. I’m also the number one patient at the nurses’ office mostly because of my nosebleeds. “Lilith, you okay?” Ariel placed her hand on her forehead then on mine and back. “You feel cold, want to go to the nurse?” I looked at my sister, her hair was in pigtails, she was wearing the school blue dress with a white shirt under it, while my hair was in a high ponytail and I was wearing blue shorts and a white T-shirt. “I was just sitting on the table and it was cool there away from the heat.” I said then turned my head to look at the boy. He was staring at me when someone bumped into me and I fell on my knees. I looked up to see Albert, our cousin. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to bump into you.” He turned his head to his friend. “See, what you made me do!” He said, pushing his friend back. “Sorry.” His friend said, looking at him than me. “It’s okay.” I said as I cleaned my knees but, I can feel my eyes getting watery. I’m such a baby. Albert is no bigger than me and Ariel, in fact, we’re the same height but because of my frail body, I’m lighter than them. I wiped my eyes when our teacher was walking towards our dodgeball area. “Hey, hey Lilith, were you looking at the boy in the kickball area?” Ariel asked. “N-No!” I said lying. “Why?” “Because,” she said, looking behind me for a while then looked back at me and smiled. I looked behind to see the boy still looking after me. I quickly turned my head and kept walking towards our classroom.   By lunch, I was sitting on the table by myself looking at my sister and classmate's play. I laid my head on the cool table when I felt the table wobble a little. I picked my head up and turned to find the boy sitting on the far side of the table. He was looking down at the table then turned his head towards me. I sat up a little straighter and stared at him. Why is he sitting here? I looked down at his lip, earlier I thought his lip was split but up close there’s nothing, not a scratch. He looked a little nervous and licked his lips. “Are… Are you okay?” he asked. Is he talking about earlier at recess? I nodded my head. “Y-yeah.” He looked more nervous than he scooted down the bench a little closer until he was sitting next to me. “W-why are you right here?” he asked. “Why don’t you play with the others?” “Because I’m sick,” I told him. “I get nosebleeds or faint if I’m under the sun too long.” I looked at him. “Why are you here?” “Same, I guess… W-what’s your name?” “Lilith, but you can call me Lily for short… An-and yours?” I asked feeling a little shy. “Charles.” He said smiling shyly and I smiled back feeling more shy. From then on we always talked and sat together during recess and lunch. But it didn’t last long. One Month Later – October 26th It was three days, or the weekend, before Ariel’s and my 7th birthday when Charles told me he was moving. We were sitting on the outside cafeteria bench table. It was the same table we’ve been sitting in since we met and so it became our table for the past month. “Why do you have to move?” I asked. “I have too,” he said. “My mom and dad told me that I have to.” He stared at the floor. I put my hand on his head. It was my way of comforting him whenever he was sad or just because I was worried about him and this was my way of showing it to him and for some reason, it always seems to calm him down. He looked at me and smiled. “I’ll come back!” “You promise?” I asked. He nodded his head and I smiled. “I know, let’s get married!” he got off the bench, his hand in mine pulling me up. “Come on, we have to go somewhere, where no one can see us.” He said and we started running towards one of the school's building. “Where?” I asked, but he didn’t say anything. We ran into the building and walked up the stairway stopping in the middle. The stairway was dim lighted and for some reason, it was my favorite place in the school. We stood in the middle because if someone comes towards the stairway we can hear them from either the first or second floor. “My mom and dad did this when they got married,” he said. “they said this is a promise that you make to someone important and that this promise lives on forever and ever. They said it’s an unbreakable promise.” “What do we have to do?” I asked. “Well… we need a pin.” He was going through his pockets when he looked down at my shirt. I looked down and saw a small pin. I took the pin off and gave it to him. “Now, we pick our fingers,” he picked his finger first then picked mine, as I had my eyes tightly shut. “and we press our finger into each other’s mouth,” he said looking at my finger. I looked at my finger as more blood welled up then back at him. His eyes looked red, like blood. But I wasn’t afraid. I was… I felt… safe looking into his eyes. He showed me his finger and slowly pressed his finger to my lips. I parted my lips and licked his finger. His blood was warm, sweet, and send a shock through my body, my heart started to beat faster, it felt like I got a jumpstart. I looked at Charles, he was staring at me, as if he felt it too. He moved his finger out of my mouth. I lifted my finger towards his mouth. He stared at my finger for a while then parted his lips. I slowly moved my finger towards his mouth, he licked my finger and I felt the shock through my body again, but it wasn’t as strong as before. I moved my finger from his mouth and I thought I saw something sharp in his mouth. But, before I could ask. He gave me a kiss on my lips. I felt my eyes widen and I went stiff. I can feel my face, feeling Hot, and my heart racing. Charles took a step back. “And seal it with a kiss,” In the dim light, I can see his face was red, hear his breathing and… smell him. I didn’t realize the smell until now. He smelled different, something I never smelled before or can describe. “Now we’re m-ma-ma-mar-married.” he said awkwardly and smiled, seeing him smile made me smile shyly. He lifted his hand and brushed his fingers on his lips then looked at me, I didn’t realize I was doing it too. Then the bell rang, signing Lunch is over. “We should go back…” he said sadly and started walking down the stairs, I ran a little down the stairs and took his hand in mine. “I’m happy,” I told him “our marriage is a promise that we’ll meet each other again. You’ll come back, okay?” He looked at me and smiled. “I’ll come back,” he said. “I promise.” We walked the whole way back to our play area holding each other’s hands.
