Enlisted

I stared at the woman on the witness stand. Obviously, she's lying. I can read her eyes. Also, her answer is totally different from what is in her affidavit furnished to me by her lawyer. I smiled as I stared at her confused eyes.  "You didn't hear what Mr. Grey said that day, right? That's simply because you were not in the store where he and Alyssa were, right?" I asked as I stared at her eyes, trying to extract the truth from her lips. "Objection, your honor!" the opposing counsel shouted.  I turned my head and smiled at the counsel who just objected. Staring at his eyes, I let him see how relaxed I am right now. As a lawyer, I know that he has already noticed the weakness in in this witness' testimony.  I looked at the witness who is now blushing and restless. I stared at her countenance. She's avoiding my eyes. I looked at the judge.  "No more questions, your honor," I said and bowed my head in respect to him. This is enough. I already accomplished what I wanted to do in the first place. I can see that I already created that "doubt" needed on the judge's mind.  I walked towards the defense counsel's table and fixed my things. My last hearing today is done. I finished packing the folders I brought with me when the next case was called. I stood and spoke softly.  "Permission to leave, your honor." The judge nodded at me. Upon seeing that, I walked out of the courtroom with my attaché case. My client, Mr. Grey, who has been sitting inside the courtroom followed me the moment he saw that I am about to leave the room. "Attorney, thank you so much," Mr. Grey said as we went out of the building. "I am so impressed by the way you cross-examined the witness today." I smiled and faced him.  "I'm just doing my job," I answered simply. "That's what you hired me for." He smiled.  "Yeah." "So I'll see you on the next hearing date. The other party has another witness to be examined. Be prepared." At that, I entered inside my car. Mr. Grey nodded and smiled. He turned around and walked towards his car which is parked next to mine.  Seeing him enter inside his car, I started my car and left the parking lot. After this hearing, I need to relax a  bit before going to the place where I need to be. Right, I still have two hours to relax. I can still go to that coffee shop that I normally go to when I want to think. Fifteen minutes later and I am already there, sitting on my favorite spot overlooking the sea while sipping a cup of hot coffee. Ah, I need this to clear my mind. I've been working on three cases last night and I needed a break. I closed my eyes and breathed in the fresh air blowing the hair away from my face. This feels so good. To me, having this time of relaxation is a luxury. After becoming a lawyer just three years ago, I seldom found enough time for myself like this. As one who is building a "name" in the legal field, I have been very busy fighting for cases, paid or de officio.  Two hours passed fast. I looked at my watch and realized that it's time to travel to the "Station". Right, there is this place where I am mandated to be present today. I was enlisted as one of the players of a game that is becoming famous nowadays. Hey, this is not an ordinary game like the ones you play in the computer shop. This is a unique game that requires a player's presence in a particular facility that is built for the game's purpose. Yeah, you're right, I have to be there.  I sighed as I stood up and picked up my bag, feeling sad that this rare relaxation time that I was able to squeeze in my tight schedule is about to end. I walked towards my car and drove for another fifteen minutes before I found myself walking towards the entrance of the "Station" with nothing but my car keys inside my pocket.  "Good afternoon. Atty. Yvette? I'm Lyn, a staff here," a lady greeted when she saw me. "Yes, I'm Atty. Yvette," I answered and smiled. Wow, she knows my name? I wondered.   "You are just in time. Please follow me," she said and led the way.  She led me inside a room where I needed to change my outfit. She opened the door and handed my suit. I already know what to do. I was oriented before after all. Proceeding to the changing room, I took out my clothes and put on the suit with one pull. In a minute, I am already ready. I came out of the room and proceeded to the capsule assigned to the character I will play.  Ygritte. Yes, that's the name of the character assigned for me to play in this game. I smiled as I saw the name carved on the capsule. Her name's unique. I looked around the room and realized that some players are already there. Wow, they came in earlier than I did. Anyway, I still have five minutes to enter in. I pressed the red button and the cover opened on its own.  Lyn came near the moment she saw that I was ready. "Atty., are you ready?" she asked nicely.  "I was born ready," I answered and lied inside the capsule.  "Good luck," she said and pressed the red button which closed the cover of the capsule.  "Welcome to the Asylum!" the announcement rang the moment I entered in. I looked around and found myself inside a big space. I can see many other players standing, sitting, and doing their own things in different parts of the asylum. I swallowed and looked for a spot to occupy. Since I came in late as compared to the other players, I can only occupy an area that is not taken. Well, that's okay. It doesn't matter where I stay anyway. That should not affect my performance in this game.  "Please rise and welcome the Master!" the system announced.  I did not move since I was standing. The other players who are doing their own thing stood up and looked in front of where the voice is coming from. We cannot see the one talking. We can just hear his voice. A moment later, a screen flashed in the middle of the place where we are standing.  "Welcome warriors! You have been enlisted to save the world!"
