Chapter 1  Prologue  Chapter 1  Prologue  There comes a day and everything is different. You're not safe. You're alone, completely alone and the only person you can trust is the person who is staring back at you in the mirror. You simply learn with time that this person keeps changing into different versions of you. This happens because you change to survive. We have an instinct to survive from the moment we are born.  When you're young it feels like the world is full of possibilities. When you're a wolf it's even worse, you feel invincible. I remember feeling invincible when I first shifted into my wolf Calla. Shifting was like breathing. It always felt like I had magic in my veins. I will always remember how I chased my father through the woods in Scotland for the very first time when I was allowed to leave the castle grounds. I felt so vulnerable and small behind his giant form, but not afraid, never afraid. Not when I was with him. My father was the Alpha of the strongest pack in the world and I was the heir to his throne. The Blood moon pack.  The day  I had my first hunt I knew I was destined to be an Alpha. Our family was feared by all, for we were the last of our kind. Pure White wolves. Believed to be touched by the Moon Goddess herself. The one that created us. We were looked upon as royalty in the pack community. My parents had told me I was special, but in a way that I knew it was important to always know how to protect myself. That is why they hid me from the rest of the world and would only welcome new packs to our lands when I finally turned eighteen. I never asked questions, because I trusted my parents completely. Sometimes it bothered me, but I didn't mind being separated from other packs. I loved my pack and the life I had with them was enough to fill my soul forever. My closest friend was Eric and I've been in love with him since I could walk. He was the son of my father's Beta, Fredrick. Second in command. Everyone knew we wanted to be mates one day and I still believe my whole pack hoped so. Unfortunately, we could only sense our mates when we turned twenty-one and it was frustrating because we both knew we wanted each other. Mates were a sacred thing. One person that the moon goddess created to be your equal and the love of your life.  Eric was one of the strongest fighters in our pack and being with him just felt right. I'll remember the night of our first kiss forever because it was the night my life was ripped away from me. I just turned sixteen and it was our pack's annual winter ball. I was out of my skin excited because it was the first one that I would be allowed to dance. I only remember flashes. How my mother's golden eyes melted into mine in the mirror, while she curled my white hair that matched the snow outside the window. The way we stood out at the ball was because our family always had to wear blood red and the rest of the pack white. How my father kissed my temple and whispered, "You will be the greatest Alpha one day, I know it,"  as the pack bowed to us. I remember how a tear slipped down my mother’s cheek as my father and I opened the dance floor with a waltz. How my father gave me to Eric with a knowing wink. Eric’s dark red hair and hazel eyes stood out like always and his touch took my breath away. Eric and I had slipped away to the library. The way he looked at me, I knew he was done waiting and so was I. I remember how I curled my fingers in his dark red hair as I felt I couldn’t breathe as I looked into his hazel eyes.  I remember how his lips found mine in the dark and his taste filled my mouth. The way his hands touched me in a way that made my heart thunder against my chest. I remember the desire in my voice when he started to lift the hem of my gown. How we both went rigid when we heard the screams coming from the ball. We both ran as fast as our legs could. I remember smelling them before I saw them. Rogues and hunters. I remember watching as my father’s magnificent white wolf ripped through the rogues. "The rogues and hunters are working together!" Someone screamed in a warning and I watched in horror how the hunters started to attack the children of the pack. Before I could shift my mother grasped my hand out of Eric's. Eric and I looked at each other and I remember how time stopped as the fear erupted into my heart. He gave me his signature smile without a hint of fear and shifted into his dark brown wolf Oades and darted into the battle without a second thought, while my mother dragged me away. "Don't shift or they'll target you!" She commanded and  I was horrified that I couldn't fight with my pack, but knew I had to listen to my mother. Once we were in my room she opened a secret door in my closet and handed me a bag. I remember staring at the fake ID and credit cards not understanding what was going on. "Iris Focus! You can't shift! You have to run and climb a tree as fast as you can, the snow will hide your scent! All of this will make sense when you come of age! I love you with all my heart! Now Run!" How my mother’s words rang in my ears as I started to climb. I stared back at the ball over the treetops while my feet were soaking wet from the snow. I didn’t feel the cold at all as I watched the battle unfolding in front of me. My eyes finally found my mother’s white wolf fighting alongside my father's. Destroying everything in their path. I felt hope stir in my heart until I saw him. A pure white wolf with red beading rogue eyes stalking towards my parents.  The white wolf gene was only in our family and that meant the monster with the red eyes was one of our relatives. Hunters threw an electric net over my parents forcing them back into their human forms. As they lifted the net my father held onto my mother and pressed his forehead against hers, whispering furiously. The stalking white wolf suddenly shifted into a man that looked just like my father and he was laughing. My mother suddenly looked straight in my direction and I knew she could sense me. She smiled at me in a way that I knew she was saying goodbye. She quickly looked away before the man could realize what she was looking at. My father suddenly looked at me too and told me through mind speak, "Stay hidden until the time is right! You are destined for great things and we will see each other again. Be strong my daughter, I love you more than anything." he suddenly disconnected me from the pack and I felt my heartbreak. I could no longer hear the voices of my pack. "Where is she?" the man screamed as his gaze traveled over the hall. My father stood up and started laughing, "You're too late, brother!"   Brother? I had an uncle. My uncle turned as my father shouted, "She’s, even more, stronger than you could have ever imagined and will never be yours!" "She will when she knows the truth! ``My uncle grabbed my father's throat. Their white hair and identical features had made my skin crawl. They had to be twins. My father laughed harder without showing any fear. "She will be the one to kill you, I can promise you that! She is destined to rule not you!"  My uncle suddenly grabbed one of the blades of a hunter that stood close by. I remembered how I had to muffle my scream when I watched as my Uncle slit my father’s throat. My mother lounged at my uncle running purposely into the blade. My uncle screamed, "Claire no!'' as he held her in his arms. I was even more confused by his heartbreaking reaction. My mother placed her hand on his cheek as he brushed the blood off the corner of her mouth. "She will choose what I chose and it will still not be you," my mother whispered as all the life left her eyes in a second. My uncle screamed and pulled the blade from her lifeless body. He cradled her in his arms as tears streamed down his face. Our pack howled in union for the loss of our Alpha and Luna. "Kill them all! '' My uncle screamed as he stood up and walked away, still holding my mother in his arms. I turned my head away as I felt each member of my pack being slaughtered. My soul is being slaughtered. Silent tears streamed down my face as I clung to the tree. Everything I had ever known was ripped away in moments. My home. Gone. My pack. Gone. I felt numb. I felt dead.
