Third Person POV Promise me you’ll protect her and care for her like your own, promise me! Evelyn’s eyes widened as the desperate pleas of her best friend rang in her head. Where are you, Adam?! Where is Kayla?! Talk to me, please!! Evelyn was screaming into their mind-link as loudly as she could, as she ran out of her house towards a blue house near the entrance of the forest. No one was at home. There was a faint scent of her best friend and his daughter leading into the forest. Without hesitation, Evelyn ran into the forest, following the scent and ready to shift at any sign of a threat. It was quiet, too quiet, as if all the living beings in the forest were holding their breath. Adam! Answer me! Where are you?! She tried desperately to call out to Adam via their mind-link in vain. And then she smelled it, blood. A lot of blood.. Fear and panic started to overcome her emotions as she ran towards the smell. What she saw next caught her completely off guard. Never in her life has she seen a sight so brutal and horrifying. The ground was red, soaked with blood and on the ground was a severed paw. A dark brown paw with a white triangular spot in the middle. Evelyn gasped in horror as it dawned on her to whom the severed paw belonged. Alpha, we need help! Please! Somebody, anybody listening, please help! In the forest!! Within moments, pack warriors and Alpha Logan found Evelyn in the forest. Seeing the disoriented Evelyn and the severed paw on the blood soaked ground, the warriors shifted into their wolf forms to prepare to face off any threats. “Alpha please, we need to find Kayla! I heard Adam’s cries over our mind-link and got here as fast as I could, only to see this. And Kayla is nowhere to be found. Whoever did this.. oh goddess how would Kayla have survived this?!” The pack searched for hours and finally found Kayla about a mile from where her father’s severed paw was found. She was hidden in the hollow of a large tree, shivering and whimpering as quietly as she could. A pack warrior carried her back to the pack house and Alpha Logan tried to question her about what happened. But the girl would not speak and finally after many tries, Evelyn could no longer watch the child suffer as she remembered the final words of her best friend. “Let me take her home, Alpha. She’s only five! Even if she saw what happened, she must be too terrified to say anything now. Give her time to process this and please let me bring her home. I’ll care for her like my own. It’s the last thing that I can do for Adam,” begged Evelyn. Seeing that they won’t get anywhere with Kayla tonight, Alpha Logan allowed Evelyn to take the girl home and commanded the warriors to step up the pack’s security, especially around the forest. After the arrangements have been made, he requested his Beta to bury Adam or rather what’s left of him quietly so as not to alarm the pack. If anyone had asked, Adam had died of a sudden illness. Evelyn tried to voice her opposition as she felt her friend deserved a proper sending off ceremony but in order to protect Kayla from further distress from interrogations with the Alpha, she relented and swore on her son’s life to keep this a secret to her deathbed. Who would have known, it wouldn’t take long before she took the secret with her to the grave. Two years later, Evelyn died of her injuries from a car accident, leaving behind her twelve year old son, Leyton and the seven year old Kayla.
