Chapter 1

I groaned as I got up from my bed. It was my first day of class. It's the second half of the school year though. My mother decided to enroll me in a human school. Because I'm different. Half vampire, half human. The vampires hated me because I was a freak in their eyes. A hybrid. I got in a lot of fights because I was bullied. Not like I couldn't fight, but it was constant. Almost every night. So Mom decided to send me to my human family. Right now, I'm living with my Uncle Calvin, my dad's older brother. "Taylor, you up already?" Aunt Jane called. "Yeah, I'll be down in 30 minutes." I stood up and walked to my mirror. I stared at myself. My eyes were gray, something I got from my Dad. Though it turns pitch black when I get out of control. My black hair fell down to my back. Unlike other vampires, I'm not pale. My skin was fair, but not pale. My lips are naturally red so I don't use lipstick. It was something I got from my mom. After getting dressed, I went down and went to the kitchen. I sat down and I looked at my cousins. Kyle was a senior, like me. So I guess I'm gonna stick with it for a while. Then there's Jean. A cute little girl who always laughs. They know what I am. And they accepted me. "Here you go, Tay." Aunt Jean handed me a cup of warm blood. I'm half-human, but I never eat human foods. I wasn't raised with it. "Thanks, Aunt. " I smiled at her. "So Tay, I think we have some classes together." I took out my schedule that I managed to get yesterday. I handed it to him. "Yeah? Look at that so we can know." "We all have the same classes, Tay. That is so cool!" I smiled. "Wait, how did you get this? It's supposed to be given to you today?" He asked. I shrugged and smiled. I saw Auntie shake her head. "Taylor, can we go to the park later?" Jean asked me with her puppy eyes. "Of course, we can. But you have to promise me you'll be good at school today, okay?" She nodded happily. "Come on, Tay. We don't want you to be late on your first day," Kyle said as he stood up. I drank out of my mug and took my bag. Uncle Calvin drove us to school. I took a deep breath. Not like I needed it. We got out and walked inside. He guided me to the principal's office. He handed me my schedule, officially, and bid me a good day. "Come, I'll introduce you to my friends." he pulled my arm. "Kyle, I'm not a friendly person or vamp, you know that." "I know. But at least you can try." He went to the lockers, and I saw some students standing by, waiting for the bell. "Hey guys, I want to introduce you to my cousin, Taylor." They all looked at me. "Hi Taylor, my name's Evangeline, but you can call me Eva." She stretched out her hand to me, and I panicked. I looked at Kyle for help. "She's not a touchy person, so yeah." I'm half-human, but I don't have blood. I'm still a vampire. A vampire that can walk under the sun. They continued to introduce themselves. I don't pay attention 'cause I know they won't be my friends. The bell rang and we all went to our class. I sat beside Kyle at the back. The teacher arrived but didn't start just yet. I was looking outside the window when my nose caught something. Blood. I tried my best to conceal my fangs. I'm not hungry, but somehow I crave that particular blood. It smelled so innocent and sweet. The scent was getting closer. Then someone entered the room. My eyes fell on her. She has dirty blonde hair that falls inches from her shoulder, and one-sided bangs that cover her face. Our eyes met and I could tell she was crying. Those hazel eyes seemed to hold too much pain. I got lost in it. Somehow, I felt a connection with her. I felt like I needed her, and that she needed me. Like I want to protect her, make sure she's safe. What are these feelings? She tore her gaze from me and sat at the far end of the row. I looked at her while she pulled her hoodie up. She pulled out a sketchpad and started drawing something. She's wearing a sweatshirt. I sniffed and I knew where that intoxicating scent was coming from. It's her blood. "I see that our new student is here. Please, Miss Lawrence, introduce yourself here in the front." I sighed as I walked. "My name is Taylor Lawrence. Kyle is my cousin. I transferred here because I... something personal happened back. Hopefully, I can survive this school. That's all." I saw that the hoodie girl was looking at me. Then she just continued what she was doing. I sat down, then our teacher started discussing. I leaned over to Kyle. "Hey, who is she?" I pointed at the hoodie girl. "She's no one. Ignore her." "Kyle," I said in a very, very low tone. It freaks the hell out of him. "How many times am I going to tell you not to use that on me?! Her name is Andrea Swift. Stay away from her." He sneered. "Why?" "Because she's a freak," he said with disgust. "Maybe you've forgotten. I am a freak, too." I spat while I narrowed my eyes on him. His eyes widened but I turned my attention to our teacher and ignored him. I rushed out of the room as soon as the bell rang. I went to my classes alone and ignored Kyle throughout the day. I guess freaks are always hated. Freaks like me. I walked my way home. I have a good memory, so I can get there with no problem. As I walked, I saw a group of 4 people circling. And they seem to be kicking something, or someone. That's when I smelled her blood. Her breathing was shallow. Those assholes! She's gonna die if this continues. I pulled up my hood. Using my speed, I tackled the one on the left. Then I punched the one on my left. I pulled the other one to the center and kicked the one left. I stood there in front of Andrea. I can hear her heartbeat slowing down. Damn. Then someone stabbed my leg. I cringed but I stepped on his hands, crushing it. He yelled. Another guy was running up on me but I caught him in his throat. I had my head bowed down so no one could see my face. I threw him away. I kicked away the one who stabbed me. "Get the hell out of here, or I'll send you there," I said, using my low voice. They scrambled away. I knelt and saw Andrea unconscious and breathing slowly. She looked pale. It would take some time for her to heal on her own. And I know this won't be the last time she can be beaten up. I lifted her and her arms fell to her side. Her sleeve went up and I saw slits in her wrists. They were fresh wounds. That's why I smelled her blood in our class. I went to a place where no one could see us. I pulled her into my lap. I was about to do something really stupid. I let my fangs out and bit my wrist. Blood trickled down my arm. I pushed it into her lips. She moved as I put my wrist in her mouth. She opened her eyes slightly. "Drink it." "What is it?" "It will help you." "No." She turned her head weakly but I held her head steady. "Drink," I said firmly. I pushed it again, and this time, she let it. She sucked on my wrist. I'm a vampire but I felt hot all over as her tongue grazed my arm. Then I pulled my arm away. I saw her close her eyes as she fell under my spell. I can't let her know that I gave her blood. My blood. Her face was covered with blood, so I started licking it off. It's my blood, anyway. I searched for her wallet, hoping I could find her address. And bingo! I carried her in my arms and then started walking. I arrived at a two-story house that had all its lights off. I sniffed, trying to know if someone was home. But luckily, nobody was inside. I took her keys from her pocket and opened the door. It smelled of alcohol, cigarettes, and something else inside. I put her on the couch. I touched her face and something shot into my arms. I know she felt it too because she gasped. I stood up and then left. I walked home. Damn, it's 8 pm already. I ran the rest of the way home. I went inside to see my mother sitting in the living room. We have been close since we lived with each other my whole life. "Hi, mom," I said as I kissed her cheek. "Taylor, where have you been? You smelled blood." "I got into something." "It's your first day and you got into a fight again? Are you bullied again?" she asked calmly, but I know she was agitated inside. That's my mom, always in control of her anger, something I didn't get. "No. But I saw someone being beaten up. Kyle called her a freak. She could've died." I said as I sat beside her. "You did the right thing," she said as she put her hand on my thigh. "I want to ask you something." "What is it?" "Why do I feel some strange connection with a certain human?" "What do you mean by strange connection?" "Like, I need her. Like I have to protect her." She chuckled and then looked at me smiling. "A girl? Really?" She looked amused. "Mom, I'm not gay, you know? But I just—" "I felt that too with your father, dear. That same feeling. Every one of our kind has those feelings. But mine was different. He's a human. But that didn't stop me. I love your dad. And I still do. He's my other half. I guess yours is different too." She smiled at me sweetly. "What do you mean?" "You found your soulmate." "My soulmate? My soul mate is a human? And a girl?! You've got to be kidding me." I can't believe what she's saying. "Have you looked into her eyes?" "Yes." "How did you feel?" "Lost." "Have you touched her?" "Yeah." "Did you feel something like electricity at that touch?" "Yes." "Have you smelled her blood?" "Mom... " "Answer me." "Yes, I have." "What did you feel when you smelled her?" "I crave her blood. But --- " "Were you hungry at that time?" "No." "She is your soulmate, then." "But she's someone I can't be with. I can't talk to her, hell, I'm not even talking to anyone else!" "But it won't stop you. It shouldn't." "But I can't, Mom. She's too deep, and I'm afraid that if I tried to reach her, I'd drown." "You can't drown, dear, you're dead already." I glared at her but she just laughed. "There is a way that can strengthen the bond, that will make her open to you." "And that would be?" "That is when she gets to have your blood in her." "You mean, like, drinking it?" "Yes. It could be like that. Anyway, that will have your blood in her." Oh s**t. I made her drink my blood. "I have to meet her sometime. My future daughter-in-law." "Mom, we're not even close!" "Oh, you'll be. Besides, you are soul mates. She won't be able to stay away from you. You are meant for each other. Well, I gotta go. I'll visit next week." She stood and kissed me on my forehead, then she left. I took a bottle of warm blood and went to my room. Damn my life. My soulmate is a human. I'm a vampire. I made her drink my blood. And she is someone bullied. If we could ever be together, her bullying could get worse. I don't want her to suffer. But Mom was right. I can't avoid it. She's my other half. I would just have to protect her, then. With that as my last thought, I fell asleep.
