PROLOGUE

398 Words
Grace Hamilton ran as fast as she could, looking back from time to time as her father followed her closely behind. There was no turning back as she carried a few gowns, and possibly just enough money to reach the port where she and James Sullivan promised to meet. They were going to board a ship sailing for Boston. They were going to start a life together. Everything's going to be perfect. “Grace!” she could hear her father trailing from a distance. “Come back here!” There was no time for reply, as soon as Grace found the first carriage within her sight, she boarded it and ordered the coach to go. She sighed deeply, in between sobs and heavy breaths. “I am sorry, Papa.” Grace mumbled. “I will come back, someday.” No one wanted for such an incident as this to happen. Grace was the apple of her father’s eyes. She has always been his favorite child because she was one to never disappoint, listening and obeying her father's every word religiously. She had just turned seventeen when her father promised her to Edward Knight, the Duke of Mansfield. He was four years her senior. He was handsome and a gentleman as she'd always thought. She was being offered the world, but somehow she knew she wanted more. When Grace met James Sullivan by chance a year back, she was swept off her feet. He was American, he was different from any other man she has met. They were so different from one another but it was their also their difference that attracted them to each other. She changed because of James. She was no longer that shy and reserved young woman who was taught to only speak when spoken to, to follow orders word for word; he made her feel alive. They were young and madly in love, but there was a problem. Grace was betroth to Edward Knight and the Baron would never let her marry a simple man. She pleaded to no avail. Her father forbade her to see James, so they decided to elope. They knew that it was not the wisest decision they would make in their lives, but the only thing they were sure off was it was a decision that they would never regret. It was sweet though, while it lasted.
