All Rights reserved Year 5 A.P. - Summer I wake up on my round big bed, covered in pillows and blankets, embraced by the darkness that those beautiful blackout curtains gave. I rolled around, making some pillows fall, trying to remember a reason to stand up and not stay in bed all day long. As tempting as it was, however, I stretch, popping my back, and stand up. Is not really like I need sleep, is just that old habits are difficult to forget. Especially to a young vampire that is. Yawning loudly and showing off my pair of long fangs, I finally start to walk and open the curtains, staying in the light until I was awake enough to think again. My apartment was on the highest floor, giving me a good view of the city below outlined with a panoramic image of the now silver-blue sea. Up there I could almost touch the always present clouds above, permanently darkening the earth enough that I could go out by day and yet grow some plants. Big thanks for these little blessings, is it not? I couldn't eat food though, so that was a minus; but the animals I drank from needed, so it worked out somehow. Still I could entertain myself with normal beverage; and I was addicted to it, trying new things every chance I got, like cherry soda, – very sweet – vanilla soda, – just put ice-cream vanilla with soda – different types of coffee, and even tried some mixed up alcoholic drinks that I found how to make in a book, though many used fruits which I didn't have. Today I choose to test a pink American lemonade, putting the sugar, lemon, the frozen cubes of cranberry juice and some ice in the extra big cup for this hot day. Sipping it up I cover the glass with my hands as its sweat drippes on my fingers, then I throw it all away and try with the straberry cubes. Much better. Afterwards I put my gym outfit; a tank top with those huge openings underneath the arms, and an oversized jogger. It was pointless to work out once you are dead; even more cardio, ha!; but I enjoyed it, or at least had done so before my death, which only meant that now I have a hot ass body for eternity, yay! Putting my running shoes in by the entrance, I grab my keys and go straight to the stairs, starting my warm up with 15 floors and 450 steps; yeah, I counted; and was out on the street. "Morning neighbor!" I receive a growl in response as he bangs his head against the already filthy glass, trying to catch me from inside the guard's cabinet. A pair of glass doors are stuck open leading to a blocked off free of danger street; courtesy of mine, some bricks and a lot of free time; but, instead of following that safe path, I jump up the tall walls and into the filled with zombies street beyond. Jogging about I easily dodge any incoming treat, all the zombies slowly turning around trying to grab me as I dashed and dodged- as if any of this rotting undeads would be able to catch me, what a joke. A gurgling scream resonated from somewhere a little later on, bringing a fang showing smile to my face. "Now starts the real work out." Zombie Runners came out from the side streets, pushing the others zombies out of their way and running fast in my direction. I could imagine them wearing those very little running shorts and colored hair bands, snickers. I accelerate, feeling the wind on my face and the strength pumping on my legs as my muscles burned from the adrenaline. It almost made me feel as if I was still alive. Almost. When I reach a good pace, jumping over walls and giving a lot of work for the runners to keep up, I put on my headset, patiently choosing the music, browsing over the screen while ducking one of the runners who jumped from a wall. Pff, silly you. Oh, this one. U2-A Beautiful Day, hehe, truly fitting for this beautiful day I would say. I dodge sideways, curving my hips once the main part of the music starts, starting to sing together out loud: "It's a beautiful daaaaaay~~~ Don't let it get awaaaay~~~ It's a beautiful daaaaay~~~" By now all the zombies from the city knew where I was, but I shrug it off; is not like they could do anything about it. Even more, only the Runners could keep up with my "slow" pace, as the Hunters didn't want to enter our little game anymore. The Hunter stood inside the tall buildings, hidden in the shadows, looking down at us. They were a little smarter than the rest of the zombies, smart enough to know, after 5 years, when to give up on attacking a stronger enemy. They learned the hard way though, which was a pity, I liked bull-I mean, playing with them. After my round around the block all the Runners were following me as I jumped on top of cars, on a wall, going around the crowd of slow Z's. We are coming closer to my base by now but I do not slow down, I pass through a wooden board that stood as a bridge on top of an enormous hole deep in the asphalt, and quickly turn around to take it off, watching as the dumb runners try to follow me, some even try to jump, failing and joining the runners group from yesterday and the day before already stuck inside. Another courtesy of mine, though I'm not a big fan of caving, I discovered. But it was good to clean the close area of runners from time to time, as they can be very persistent in caving hole in the walls and fences to get to my animals. Such annoying creatures. Even better was that their smells and sounds would drive away other zombies, covering the smell and sounds from inside the walls coming from my base. With that part out of the way I put the wooden board sideways and jump up the walls I made; and I may add that they gave me a lot of trouble in the beginning they did, afterall, how was I supposed to know that you need to put them in zigzag pattern so they wouldn't form straight cracks following the intersections? Or that paint was not just to make the walls pretty, but to protect it against the weather as well? Aaanyway... Now, on top of those walls, I can see part of my safe land, piece by piece cleaned by my own hands and protected inside many walls, all coming together at the central one that had expanded and increased throughout the years for shits and giggles. The first thing I did when the apocalypse happened was to find the best place to live in, and ended up with the best and most beautiful apartment complex, one floor for each room, with my own pool – that's right, my-own-pool-in-my-apartment! – as well as the view and the roof where a winter garden had been made in the past. The second thing; after two weeks just collecting fluffy towels and trying the fancy clothes – and getting rid of the zombies inside the building as well, before anyone can call me lazy- I started to map out the place, finding a shopping mall close by and a gigantic park with a pond in the middle, a curved red bridge passing from one side to the other. That's when I decided to start... well, to kind of open my on conservation center for wild animals, and securing my food at the same time of course, hehe. It was a good way to maintain an equilibrium as bigger animals could survive a little blood loss but, on the other hand, feeding on smaller ones such as rabbits or birds meant killing them every time. What can I say, I'm such a nice person. No, nice vampire? Hm... So that was the first wall I made; first going around the park, as metal fences weren't quite secure, and then went out of town to bring some volunteers for my little forest, plus some cows as milk can go bad really quickly, and so many drinks needed milk to be made. Cough cough. Later on I expanded, making my tower the central building from the enormous circular walls I built. Then I made some stairs coming on top of the inner walls so the animals could cross, as the normal zombies couldn't climb them. Which lead to the problem with the others zombies; the Runners were easy to deal with, but the Hunters were a pain in the ass, in need of a beating every time they tried to enter and kill my preys. Overall, that's why where once there were cars, sidewalks and even some houses now stood trees, bushes, deer, wolves, birds singing merry songs, all in all a little piece of paradise. Some houses close to the forest were easy to open up for the trees, even more in an expensive neighborhood like this, with their enormous gardens and what not; I just brought down the gates and fences and voala! Wildlife happily took its course. Well, all that taking off the mutation generated by the radiation on the plants and animals, everything was merry and happy. For now, at least.rked out somehow. Still I could drink normal beverage; and I was addicted to it, trying new things every chance I got, like cherry soda, – very sweet – vanilla soda, – just put ice-cream vanilla with soda – different types of coffee, and even tried some mixed up alcoholic drinks that I found how to make in a book, though many used fruits which I didn’t have.
