Chapter One: Paige

772 Words
No matter how long it takes, you will be mine again. No matter where you go, I will follow. Everything you do, I'll be watching. Whoever you see, I will see them too. You belong to me Paige and I will do whatever it takes to get you back. Your one true love, Damon. I place my hands on the kitchen counter, I need the help to stay on my feet. I can feel it coming. My heart is pumping hard and fast, I can feel the blood pounding hot in my ears. My breath hitches and suddenly I can't breathe. Breathe, breathe, deep breaths, focus. After what feels like hours, I catch my breath and slowly come out of my panic attack. I sit at the kitchen table to calm down, I always feel like I'm going to die when the attacks come on.          I've been getting these letter for six months now but they never get any less creepy. I throw it in the trash and shrug off my jacket, trying to shake off the uneasy feeling in my stomach with it. I run to make sure that I locked the front door. I hope that if I just keep ignoring the letters they will stop coming, but they always come. They come every Monday like clock work and I'm immediately taken back to one of the worst times in my life. I can still feel the blows to my body, still hear the abusive insults spat in my face and I can still feel the despair, the feeling of no way out. I empty the contents of the pantry and get to work on making some brownies. Baking always takes my mind off things. I move around my tiny kitchen with ease and grace. Cracking eggs, melting butter and mixing up some batter is like therapy to me. I only started baking after my parents died. When I lost them, I was unable to be still, I couldn't stand being left alone with only my thoughts. When I met Damon I thought he was amazing, so charming and kind. I was wrong, he made me feel more alone than ever. I honestly don't think I would have made it through these past three years without baking, reading, painting and horses. They are all that have kept me sane. And Chelsea of course. My best friend and roommate, she has comforted me more times than I could count and she's the one who gave me the courage to leave Damon. When I left him at the start of the year, Chelsea and I moved in together. Our apartment is a warehouse style building, full of quirks and character and I love it, despite the size. Truthfully it's all we could afford anyway. I never told Damon where I was moving to but he still found me, he always finds me.  I put the brownies in the oven and have a shower while they're baking. I try to wash away the fear, scrub away the traces of my past, if only it was that easy. When I return to the kitchen the smell of chocolate fudge arouses my senses and I'm suddenly starving. As soon as I plate them up Chelsea barges into the kitchen. I sometimes think that she must have been a bull in a previous life and I'm glad she didn't decide to be a ballerina in this one, otherwise I'd have to squash her dreams. "Oooooh brownies, you are the best roommate!" "Sometimes I think your timing is too good. Do you only come home when I'm finished baking something?" I joke. "Hmmmm, maybe......Is it your interview tomorrow that has you baking?" "Well that, and I got another letter from Damon, he just won't stop. I don't know how much more I can take!" I say, my words muffled by the frog in my throat.  "That scumbag. I'll kill him Paige, I swear I will." My tears finally spill over my cheeks, the protective words of my best friend tipping me over the edge. She hugs me for a long time, letting me sob on her shoulder until I have no more tears to cry.  "Come on beautiful, let's stuff ourselves with these brownies and then I'll help you pick something sexy to wear for your interview tomorrow."  I try to forget Damon and focus on tomorrow. This will be the most important interview I have ever done in my life. Everett Colt is the best race horse trainer in all of Australia, maybe even the world, and I have a chance at becoming his head Groom.
