CHAPTER 6

JESSICA'S POV The house was too quiet. Every sound—the floor creaking, the refrigerator humming—felt like it was judging me. I lay in the dark, staring at the ceiling. Even though I was alone, I could still feel their eyes on me. All four of them. I couldn't breathe. I needed to move. To get out. The feeling was so strong it hurt. It was past two in the morning. They had to be asleep by now, right? I slipped out of bed. My bare feet made no sound on the cool wooden floor. I didn't grab shoes. I just needed air. I needed to be somewhere that wasn't theirs. The hallway was dark and full of shadows. Behind each closed door was a sleeping dragon I had to sneak past. I held my breath and listened. Nothing. Just go. I made it down the big staircase, careful with each step, and slipped out the side door into the cool night. The garden glowed with moonlight. Everything looked silver and black. I took a deep breath of free air. The smell of jasmine flowers filled my lungs. Finally. I walked across the wet grass. The blades felt cool and soft under my feet. For just a few seconds, I felt a little bit of peace. "And where do you think you're going?" The voice came from the shadows, low and rough, cutting through the quiet night. I spun around, my heart jumping into my throat. Sebastian stepped out from behind a huge oak tree. Moonlight lit up the hard lines of his face, his broad shoulders, his strong jaw. He was barefoot too. He wore only sweatpants that hung low on his hips. His bare chest was all muscle and shadow. He looked like he belonged in the darkness—like a hunter. "For a walk," I said, trying to sound normal. But my voice came out too high and shaky. He took a step toward me. I took a step back without thinking. His eyes, dark and intense, locked onto me. "It's the middle of the f*****g night." "I couldn't sleep." "I know." Another step forward. "I felt you moving. I always feel you." His words sent a shiver down my whole body. He felt me? The thought scared me. And excited me. He kept walking toward me, slow and deliberate, like a predator. I kept backing up until my back hit a tree trunk. The rough bark scratched through my thin nightshirt. He didn't stop. He came right up to me and put his hands flat against the tree on both sides of my head. He trapped me. His body was so close—a wall of heat and pure alpha power that blocked out everything else. The night air that had felt so free now felt heavy and charged with dangerous electricity. Oh god. My heart pounded against my ribs like crazy. I was trapped. Alone with him. And he was so much bigger, so much stronger. I realized how easily he could overpower me right here, where no one would see or hear. The thought crashed over me like a wave. His smell surrounded me—clean sweat, dark earth, and something wild. Something dangerous and masculine. It was the smell of his wolf, and it was so close to breaking free it made the air crackle. His breath was hot against my ear. "You're shaking." I was. Every part of me felt alive and screaming with a confusing mix of real fear and something else. Something hot that was building low in my stomach. My body was betraying me, responding to his power even though my mind screamed at me to run. "Let me go, Sebastian." My words came out as a weak whisper. "I don't think I will." His voice was a low growl, rough with desire he wasn't hiding anymore. He leaned closer, his mouth near my temple. "You're the one who came out here. You came to my territory. Did you want me to find you, Jessica? Were you hoping for this?" "No," I breathed out. But it was a lie. My body was leaning toward his heat on its own. My n*****s got hard against my thin shirt. The forbidden pull between us was like a live wire, hot and pulsing. He made a sound deep in his chest, almost like a purr. "Liar." One of his hands left the tree. His fingers brushed a piece of hair off my cheek. The touch was surprisingly gentle, so different from the aggressive way he had me trapped. His fingertips traced down my jaw. His rough skin felt amazing against mine. My eyes closed. This is wrong. This is so wrong. But I didn't move. I couldn't. "Look at me." It was a soft command, but still a command. I opened my eyes. His face was inches from mine. In the moonlight, his eyes weren't gray anymore. They were blazing with flecks of bright, hungry gold. His wolf was right there, looking at me through his eyes. And it wanted me. The raw hunger in his look stole my breath. His thumb stroked my bottom lip. The touch burned. "This mouth," he said quietly, his voice rough. "It's always so defiant. Always talking back. I wonder what else it could do." He was going to kiss me. I could see it blazing in his eyes. My lips opened with a gasp I couldn't hold back. He lowered his head. His breath mixed with mine. The whole world shrank to just this moment, to the tiny space between our mouths. The tension felt thick and sweet and unbearable. But he didn't kiss me. He stayed there, so close I could feel the heat of his lips but couldn't taste them. Teasing me. Torturing me. "Sebastian…" His name came out like a plea, but I didn't know what I was begging for. For him to stop? Or for him to finally, finally do it? A slow, wicked smile touched his mouth. "What do you want, little omega?" he whispered, his voice full of dark promise. "You need to say it."
