🌑 CTRL 🌑
𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝐹𝑜𝑢𝑟.....
Eden Heights High had always run on perception.
Who looked the happiest.
Who was the smartest.
Who didn't crack.
But by Tuesday morning, Tami Westwood was cracking.
Not publicly.
Never publicly.
But in the mirror of the girl's restroom - the one tucked behind the west wing, where no one ever went except for late class dodgers and quiet criers - she pressed her palms to the sink and breathed like she was trying to hold her bones together.
Her reflection stared back: mascara flawless, cheekbones sharp, lips tinted burgundy. Untouchable.
But her eyes told the truth.
She was tired of pretending. Of defending herself. Of being both the villain and the victim in a school-wide show that CTRL was directing from the shadows.
The leak had been real. The fallout brutal.
And every whisper that followed only scraped deeper into her ribs.
In the hallway, Alia passed her without a word.
Not anger this time.... just emptiness.
Which was worse.
Worse than shouting. Worse than a fight.
Clara slipped beside her instantly, warm and bubbly.
"Ignore her. You've already apologized enough."
"I didn't apologize," Tami said flatly.
Clara blinked. "Still counts."
The whispers hit her like perfume - invisible but heavy.
"𝑆ℎ𝑒'𝑠 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑔 ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒?"
"𝐷𝑖𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑠𝑒𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝐴𝑙𝑖𝑎 𝑖𝑔𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑑 ℎ𝑒𝑟?"
"𝑀𝑎𝑦𝑏𝑒 𝑠ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑎𝑙𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑎 𝑠𝑛𝑎𝑘𝑒,"
Clara looped her arm through Tami's.
"Ignore them. They're just hating."
Cassie leaned against the locker near the chemistry lab, hoodie up, her laptop case swinging by her side.
She didn't say anything. She never did.
But her eyes? Watching everything.
In third period - AP Literature, Tami sat near the back. Clara had tried to sit beside her, but the teacher, Ms. Reese, called for new partners.
Of course she did.
And who else but Zayn Eden ended up sliding into the seat next to hers , flipping his poetry packet without a glance.
Tami's breath caught.
She hadn't had a read conversation with Zayn since the rumors. Since Alia.
And her, now...there he was.
Crisp white shirt. Rolled up sleeves. A single silver ring on his thumb. His scent - subtle cologne, clean and musky - wrapped around her like heat.
They sat in silence.
Until he finally looked up.
"You alright?" He asked, voice even.
Her throat tightened. "Do I look alright?"
"No," he said without hesitation. "You look like someone trying too hard to pretend she doesn't want to scream."
Her gaze snapped to his, and for a moment - a sharp suspended moment - she wasn't Tami, the Queen Bee. She was just a girl, hurting in designer heels.
"You think I said all that for no reason?"
Zayn leaned back in his chair, eyes unreadable. "I think people say a lot of things when they're scared of losing someone they love."
She turned her face away. "I wasn't scared."
"You were," he said gently. "You just didn't realize it yet."
Silence fell again, but not the choking kind. This one was...safe.
"Alia was your best friend," he added.
"Was," Tami repeated quietly. "She was everything. Then she looked at you and you looked back. And suddenly, I didn't know which one I hated more - her for getting what I wanted or me for not being enough."
That was the first time she said it out loud.
Even Zayn looked startled.
Then quietly - "You were always enough, Tami. You just didn't think you deserved it."
Their eyes locked.
No noise. No chaos. Just them.
They didn't speak again till the end of the class. But as they walked out, their shoulders brushed. Neither pulled away.
During lunch break, Tami didn't sit in her usual spot with Clara and Cassie. She slipped outside, sitting beneath the old sycamore tree by the tennis court. The one spot she was sure no one would follow her to.
Except someone did.
Zayn.
He didn't say anything. Just dropped his bag next to hers and sat, stretching out his legs.
They stared at the clouds in silence.
"You know," he murmured, "you're more than what people say about you."
She glanced sideways. "Why are you being so nice to me, even after everything?"
"Because you look like you need someone who doesn't expect you to perform."
Her chest tightened.
"Thank you," she whispered.
"For seeing me."
After school, as the hallways cleared out, Tami stood by her locker, staring blankly at her books. A folded paper stuck out between the pages of her planner.
She opened it slowly.
"Friday's coming. Hope you've tied your loose ends."
-CTRL.
She crumpled the note.
Clara called her name from behind. "Tami? Everything okay?"
Tami forced a smile and turned. "Fan mail."
Clara's eyes flicked to the crushed note in her hand. "From CTRL?"
Tami stiffened. "I didn't say that."
Clara didn't blink. "Didn't need to."
At 9:57 P.M., CTRL posted:
"𝑆ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑡."
No name. No image. Just dread.
By morning, #TamiWestwood was trending across Eden Heights' group chats.
And Zayn? He watched it happen.
His finger hovered over her contact.
He didn't call
But he didn't log off either.
