Makayla paused before sliding her hand into Brian’s when he opened the back door of the car and extended one hand to help her out. She grabbed his backpack at the same time, gripping the handle at the top. He reached over and took it from her, swinging the strap over his shoulder before reclaiming her hand. She gazed around in awe. The narrow patch of land between a rugged forest-covered mountain and the bay was wall to wall buildings of all shapes, sizes, and building materials.
