Chapter Fourteen Smoke wafted up to the ceiling in the kitchen. The white walls turned a light shade of gray that darkened as the contents in the pan continued to burn. Patty went to the window. Finding the latch, she shoved it open. The dark curls of smoke made a mad dash to escape. But the late afternoon breeze pushed them back into the kitchen. The acrid smell pushed inside Patty’s nose, and she let out a string of coughs. She pressed a dish towel to her face. Then waved it about in an effort to urge the smoke to clear.
