Second period went by fast, and before I knew it I was exiting the room and looking for Jacek. He came around the corner, watching how my eyes searched for him. Knowing that he was the only person I was focused on made him let out a deep breath. I was a good friend to those I loved, and from what he could see, I was good at loving those around me. He watched as my eyes found him, saw that slow smile slide cross my pretty lips, and the way I nibbled on my lower lip made my look stunning and nervous.
“Took you long enough. I almost thought you stood me up.” I held out my hand for him as I felt the heat over my skin from the way Jacek looked at me.
Wouldn’t dream of it. He said mockingly as he gave me his hand.
As we sat down in third, I watched as he shot Derek a look that screamed “f**k off”. Derek obliged and ignored everyone the entire class. I tried to talk to him only twice, and after the second time I knew he didn’t want to talk, so I left him alone.
After third was lunch, today though, Jacek walked with me to join Casey and Gwyneth. The entire school has been on edge today with the arrival of one of our sister schools, and the tension as getting unbearably high. Not to mention, with me now on the List everyone was looking at me for more reasons than me being human. Some looked like they were observing me, studying the way I was. It was making me nervous as hell.
We both got something to eat and sat down in the courtyard grass with Casey and Gwyneth who were in deep conversation about something, only stopping when me and Jacek joined them.
“How has your day been so far?” Casey asked as he took a bite of his sandwich.
Jacek shrugged and I groaned. “So, boring. Which is actually quite nice.”
Gwyneth giggled before taking a drink from her bottle. “That’s good then. Has anyone heard about…”
Right on cue, the courtyard and lunch area was flooded with Darthwood guys wearing dark blue and girl’s in cheer outfits. They seemed to have washed in and took over the best they could, causing trouble and tension in their wake. I glanced around and knew what was bound to happen.
“Hey, where’s Hexic?” I glanced around, trying to find him in the new crowd.
“I think he had to go to the principal’s office for something.” Casey said reassuringly.
I sighed. “Oh, thank god. These new people would more than likely tear him apart.”
Gwyneth nodded. “Agreed, poor thing needs to get some balls. Will you come with me to the drink line, Cairyn? I want a smoothie before they are all gone.”
“Okay, we’ll be right back, boys.” I said as we got up.
Heading back into the cafeteria part of the courtyard, Gwyneth and I made our way through the new and old crowd. Both of us could feel the eyes on us as we passed by, trying our best to ignore everyone around and focus on our goal at hand. Getting a smoothie.
“Why does our school seem way too big when it’s just our regular students, but when an away team gets here it’s like we’re in a can of sardines?” Gwyneth asked as we saw our destination coming up.
I shrugged. “I feel like I’m in a snow globe and the snow is everyone with fancy abilities, and I’m the snowman standing alone in the middle.”
Gwyneth laughed as we got to the back of the line, but something was causing me to be on alert. And I was soon to learn why.
Before I even realized what was happening, there was a strong hand on the side of my neck. Someone was grabbing me from behind, and with a smooth motion I was pulled backwards. I tried to pull away, but whoever it was, was far stronger than me.
“Hey, let go of her!” Gwyneth shouted as she went to move forward.
“Stay there, little teleporter.” A rough voice behind me said as the hand gripped tightly. “I just really want to know why there is a human in Black Water High? From what I can tell, she’s the only human too. And god damn baby, you smell delicious. Like warm vanilla with hints of cinnamon.”
I huffed. “If you don’t let me go, I’m going to get you wrecked.”
The guy smiled as he leaned forward and licked the side of my face. “What are you, a weak human, going to do against someone like me? I could have you in every position before anyone even noticed you were naked.”
“She warned you.” Gwyneth said, taking a step back.
“I’m shaking in my boots.” He said as his other hand began to roam my side. “Do something.”
“f**k you.” I growled. “Jacek, help me…”
“Who-“
Before the guy could even finish his sentence, Jacek materialized in front of us and reached out to grab my hand. He went to pull me away, but saw the guy had my throat. Within another second, he lunged forward, broke all the guys fingers that touched my skin, and then proceeded to pull me away from him. I smiled as I felt myself against his chest. With a fluid motion, he kicked out and landed a solid kick to the guys chest to get some distance between us.
“Why is it that everyone has to mess with the human?” Jacek’s husky voice sounded more irritated than usual as he leaned back to examine the damage done to my throat.
The guy laughed as he shook his hand out. “So, you had a protector then, small human? I guess that would be wise for you.”
Jacek sighed. “I’ll advise that you leave her alone.”
“A human surrounded by all this power, how is it that you’ve even managed to keep her safe? I know one guy in particular who is not going to leave her alone when he finds her.” The guy said nursing his hand that had the broken fingers.
I rolled my eyes. “I’ll just add him to the list then. Didn’t your mama teach you to behave around pretty girls?”
The guy laughed as he jumped a little, his excitement brimming over the top. “Oh man, Drax’s going to love you.”
“Whatever, man. Can I get back in line now or are you going to continue to harass me?” I asked, crossing my arms across my chest.
He put his hands up. “Go on. I won’t touch you again.”
I rolled my eyes while the guy backed up and retreated. I glanced over to Jacek and bit down on my bottom lip. “You know, you’re a real bad ass, Mr. Bad Wolf. Something I can get used to.”
He shook his head. I will never get used to the amount of people that always harass you. Trouble magnet.
“Come now, you know you like it. Keeps you on your toes.” I winked as him before gestured back out to where Casey was. “Go relax, I’m sure I’ll be fine.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure?”
I nodded. “Yeah, you can’t babysit me every second of the day. You’ll be stressed out doing that. Go sit back with Casey, oh, and will you watch for Hexic? I don’t want the s**t heads at Darthwood terrorizing him.”
He sighed. Call me if anyone else decides to pick on the human again today.
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah yeah. See you in a minute.”
When he was gone Gwyneth smiled at me. “I don’t think I will get used to hearing you talk to him through your thoughts. It’s an ability I never expected a human to have.”
“Are you hinting that I’m not all human, Gwyn?” I asked with a slight teasing smile on my face.
“Yes. Yes, I am.” She said, giggling a little. “Look, from the things I’ve heard about your grandma and mother, I just don’t think it’s possible for you to not have any powers. I think you just haven’t unlocked them, or maybe…maybe your mother or grandma repressed them.”
I shrugged. “I wish that was true, maybe then I wouldn’t have to worry Jacek so much. I would be able to defend myself against these ass hats. They are getting on my damn nerves. Now, I have to worry about a completely different set of super beings. At least the ones that go to school with us are slightly getting used to having me around. Hell, Vivian walked by me two times yesterday and didn’t say a word to me. Never even said anything in P. E. It was actually kind of weird.”
Gwyneth nodded. “That is really weird, but you do have a point. The other students are getting used to having you here, so, it’s not that big of an issue anymore. Darthwood on the other hand…”
“I sense you want to say something, what is it?” I asked, glancing over to Gwyneth with a questioning gaze.
“I…think I know who that guy from earlier was talking about. I don’t remember too correctly, but I think he was talking about the quarterback of Darthwood High’s football team. I remember the name, but for some reason I can’t place what he looks like. I didn’t pay any attention last year when they were here.” Gwyneth mumbled the last part, but in actuality, I wasn’t too worried about it.
I shrugged as I let out a big yawn. “It’s alright, Gwyneth. It doesn’t matter. I can handle myself, and what I can’t handle, I’m sure Jacek can.”
Gwyneth nodded. “Can I ask you something? What is it that makes him so attached to you? Did you say something to him or do something for him? I appreciate him watching over you the way he does, but it’s strange for Jacek to be like this.”
“Are you sure? See, everyone always tells me things they “know” about Jacek, but no one talk to him. How is it that everyone knows him, yet he supposedly never speaks to anyone? I think everyone decided to keep their distance, and he did the same.” I shrugged.
We got to the front line and Gwyneth got her smoothie. She looked back over to me sighing.
“Your right, Cairyn.” Gwyneth said with a sigh. “We don’t now Jacek like you do. It’s wrong of us to think of him the way we do.”
I smiled, then something caught my attention. We were being watched. “We should get back to the guys.”
Gwyneth raised an eyebrow. “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t know. I just don’t like the feeling I have.”
