As he laboriously finished his last multiplication, Jayhan realised Eloquin was hovering anxiously at his elbow. He looked up. “May I go?”
“Just a minute. I’ll have to check them first.” She ran her eye quickly down the line of sums and gave a relieved smile. “Thank goodness! You got them all right. And now, I have to go.” When Jayhan looked puzzled at her haste, she said, “Remember? Maud and I are helping Sasha to put on a gown for the first time.”
“Can I come too?”
“No, Jayhan. You can see her when she’s ready. We will bring her down to the salon, just before lunch. So you can see her then.” She wagged her finger at him. “And I don’t want any witticisms from you. She will be very nervous. Be the kind friend I know you are.”
