CHAPTER 7 I suppose I was lucky to last the winter living in Matron Sybrina’s orphanage. After the explosion, I couldn’t blame Sybrina for kicking me out. Copper and I became friends. He’d been abandoned as an infant at the orphanage door. The only parent he ever knew was Matron Sybrina. There were four bedrooms on each floor, twelve total. Thirteen if you counted the matron’s first floor chambers. There were three beds in each room, but only fifteen kids were living at the orphanage. Most of the parentless kids were girls. The orphanage rules were simple. Work hard, don’t make noise, don’t bother the matron. On the north side of the building was a garden.
