Chapter 2 edited
Angela’s POV
The closer I got to Blue Sky territory, the heavier my chest felt. The air even smelled different here—too clean, too controlled, like the pack itself was holding its breath. Bella stirred restlessly inside me, her unease bleeding into my own.
“This place feels wrong,” she murmured.
“It always has,” I replied quietly, tightening my grip on the steering wheel.
The border guards spotted my van before I even reached the gate. Of course they did. Blue Sky never missed anything—not when it came to control. Two warriors stepped forward, their stances rigid, eyes sharp as they scanned me.
“Name,” one of them demanded.
“Angela,” I said flatly. “Alpha Roman called me back.”
Recognition flickered in their eyes. One of them stiffened, then nodded.
“You’re expected.”
That made my stomach twist. The gates opened, slow and deliberate, like the pack itself was deciding whether to let me breathe. I drove through without another word, resisting the urge to floor it straight through the territory and never look back.
The pack house loomed ahead, just as imposing as I remembered. Stone, steel, and authority. No warmth. No welcome.
I parked and cut the engine, sitting there for a moment longer than necessary. Bella pressed against me, steady and strong.
“We’ve survived worse,” she said softly. “We can survive this.”
I stepped out of the van. Eyes followed me instantly. Whispers rippled through the warriors and pack members lingering nearby. I could feel them assessing me—judging, measuring, deciding where I belonged. Just like always.
Before I could even take a second step, a familiar voice cut through the air.
“Angela.”
I turned slowly. Alpha Roman stood at the top of the pack house steps, his posture as commanding as ever, his expression unreadable. He looked older than I remembered… harder. Or maybe I was just seeing him clearly now.
“You’re late,” he said.
“I came as fast as I could,” I replied evenly. No bow. No submission.
His eyes narrowed slightly at that, but he didn’t comment. Instead, he gestured for me to follow him inside. The doors closed behind us with a heavy thud.
“Your shift is tomorrow at dawn,” he said as we walked. “The elders will be present.” That stopped me cold.
“The elders?” I snapped. “That’s not necessary. Plenty of wolves shift without an audience.”
Roman turned to face me, his gaze sharp. “This is not up for discussion.” Bella growled low in my chest.
“Why?” I asked. “You don’t summon someone back after three years just for tradition.”
For a split second, something flickered across his face—something I couldn’t read.
“You’ll understand soon enough,” he said. “For now, you’ll stay in the east wing.”
Of course. Isolation. Control. I clenched my fists.
“I’ll shift, and then I’m leaving.” His lips pressed into a thin line. “We’ll see.” As he turned away, a cold realization settled deep in my bones. I hadn’t been called back just to shift. And whatever awaits me tomorrow… Blue Sky had planned it for a long time.
