Karen and Dan finally arrived at Thorndike at six o’clock in the evening. The drive down from London had taken over seven hours because Dan decided to take mainly A and B roads instead of the motorway after it was announced on the news that morning that the police had closed it off in both directions due to a major accident.
Furthermore, whenever Karen needed to feed or change Charlotte, it made more sense to stop rather than keep moving.
Dan used Google to direct him the last 10 miles as he was too tired to negotiate the country lanes with their hit-and-miss signage.
When they pulled up in front of Moorside cottage, Dan switched off the engine and stretched his arms out to relieve the stiffness from the journey.
