9 Jacobs entered the Craven and Sons butcher’s shop to find Pete Craven serving alone behind the counter. As there were only two customers waiting, and not wishing to cause Pete any unnecessary embarrassment at his place of business, Jacobs decided to let them finish before he asked to speak to his two sons. Once the shop was empty, Jacobs explained why he was there, and Pete showed him into the back where his sons were busy chopping meat and sawing bones. Both boys looked up in surprise when they saw who it was their father was bringing to see them. “Try not to keep them too long,” Pete said, “unless you want to take both of them down to the nick and throw their lazy arses in jail.” With that, he turned and walked back into the shop.
