  Fern   I have been here once before. In the place where nothing and everything exist together. My eyes come into focus, and there is nothing in front of me. Glancing over my shoulder, I expect to see the same, but shadows move off in the distance.   Their forms are familiar, like I am watching something that has already happened. I see a child clinging to a pole while a whip slices through her back. She doesn't scream. Instead, she bites down on a rag placed in her mouth. She takes each strike before collapsing, hanging by her arms, lifeless.   Tears drip down my cheeks. I know who that little girl is, and I hate that I can't protect her.
