Fern
The air between them is wrong. It is too tight and too heavy.
I look from Justin to Gaven, suddenly, painfully aware that they aren't just arguing. They're posturing. Measuring. Circling something that has me at the center, whether I asked for it or not.
Gaven's eyes never leave Justin. "Why are you here?" he asks, voice low and dangerous.
Justin stiffens. "I'm here to see Fern," he says, pointedly. "Not you."
My heart starts pounding so hard I can feel it in my throat. I try to speak. Nothing comes out.
Gaven takes a step forward, his presence filling the room. "You've already been warned to learn your place when it comes to her."
Something in me snaps.
"His..." My voice cracks, then steadies. "His place?"
Both men look at me.
