CHAPTER TWO Present Time Delfi lay on her back willing her body to greet the day with enthusiasm. Her husband would not be beside her; she knew without turning. He would be re-staking tomatoes, looking for non-existent weeds, watering by hand—by hand! Even her father had seen the wisdom of the hose.
