The more she thought of this, the more she was certain that was what would happen. ‘I must hear where they are planning to go,’ she told herself, ‘and if they intend to return as soon as the Marquis leaves.’ She wondered again how long he would stay. It seemed very strange that he had come here so unexpectedly unless there was a special reason for it. Because she was feeling so restless, she went in through the secret panel, which was near the nursery. Reaching the bottom floor, she moved silently along it, holding in her hand a candle that she had brought from her bedroom, until she reached the peephole into the study.
