Twenty-EightWinding our way along the eerily quiet maze of featureless corridors, we finally managed to reach the hospital exit. We stood before the huge entrance, looking out across a scene of total devastation. It seemed as if every surrounding building was flattened, huge piles of rubble, twisted, mangled protrusions of rusted metal sprouting through the broken concrete like skeletal fingers. Tiny plumes of ink-black smoke spiralled skywards from the ruins and, amongst them, spread across the ground, the grotesque remains of human bodies. Not vaporised. Sliced in half by lasers. No one had cleaned up and I wondered why. Exchanging a quick glance, I took her hand and we ran across the open square. Looking back I noted that the hospital had not remained unscathed.
