The doorbell had never sounded louder, and Andrew winced. He had expected the next sound to be the last he ever heard. The man half-closed his eyes and shook his head as the doorbell sounded again. Then twice more, accompanied by a loud banging. ‘Andrew, I know you’re in there, I saw you pull up in your car. I gave you an hour to get your s**t together, but now it is rent time. Come on for God’s sake, open up.’ Andrew looked up at the scowling figure, his heart pounding. ‘Look, he won’t go away. He’s got a key and most probably a gun too.’ ‘Get rid of him then.’ ‘So, you can kill me?’ ‘I could just kill you both. You now and then your annoying friend.’ Andrew’s mind raced, this had to give him some sort of opportunity. Then the key rattled quickly in the lock and the door swung open.
