Emily waited for her father to leave continuing to play with her doll as if she did not have a care in the world. She had done as her mother had told her the previous night by feigning ignorance concerning Margaret’s demise. The only thing she had not managed was a fresh batch of tears when receiving the news from her father, but that was a minor detail.
Although pretending not to hear, Emily had listened carefully to her father explaining about the men who were coming to inspect the cellar.
When her mother had shown her the secret place she and others rested during the day, she had been very specific about Emily not disturbing them unless it was an emergency. Well as far as she was concerned, having a group of strange men poking around in the cellar certainly constituted an emergency.
